Huge hotel

Dec 13th, 2019

We stayed nine nights at this huge hotel. We were all inclusive. The other guests were mostly from the US, Canada and South America. The weather was beautifully warm and sunny the whole time. For its size the hotel was very comfortable. Our room was quietly located overlooking one of the pools. Because of its size it was a fair walk to one of the several restaurants and beach. There were various snack bars dotted around the site. The buffet restaurants were very well stocked with a huge variety of fresh and tasty dishes. We didn’t try the a la carte restaurants as we overheard bad comments regarding the steak restaurant from a couple of people. We have only a couple of bad criticisms: The check in was very unfriendly. After our tiring journey, we were kept waiting, standing in a queue, in the heat for at least 1/2 hour. Other places we have stayed would have asked us to take a seat and offered a drink while they took care of check in for us. In the afternoons I often saw other guests enjoying the same welcome as ourselves. We then had a long walk to try to find our room which, given the size of the hotel, was not straightforward. No assistance given although our luggage was taken by the bell boy. The other criticism is: because it is a huge hotel it’s a long way from the town of Playa del Carmen. We like to try smaller restaurants and cafes when we travel. There is a hotel shuttle which makes 3 return trips a day for a small fee. We didn’t try it as we were told on arrival that the only way was by taxi costing USD 20. We did however go into town one day. We walked along the beach which was lovely and quite interesting, but it was almost 10 km! It took about 1 1/2 hours. We returned by cab costing 300 pesos. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

My honest opinion

Dec 13th, 2019

This is my honest opinion . When you book this hotel it’s actually 3 hotels on the resort. It’s very big. I stayed in the riviera and it’s a wonderful , great hotel. A little worn but very nice. The grounds are excellent and beach superb. This resort is kept clean by permanent cleaners walking around all day tidying up. As for the staff , you won’t meet many as good as they are. They can’t do enough to help you. They are helpful, happy and very polite . They are genuinely pleased to see you. They are on very low wages and provide a great service so please tip them now and again only a dollar or two , they deserve it for the service they provide. All tips go into a jar and is shared between all staff in their section. This hotel though is trying to provide a service for the younger and elder generation . This doesn’t work as the older people want some piece and quite to relax and the young people love the music and games . You can hear loud music all over the complex so it doesn’t quite work. There are loads of pools. There is a lot of different nationalities here. Mostly Americans and Eastern European’s. They are all very loud and in large groups and dont consider other people around them. They play their own music on the beach and shout across loudly to each other so again no peace. The Americans are treated a bit better than other nationals as they tip a lot of money . An example ,They demanded the tv was put on for their football so it was changed over and every one else lost out. The Canadians are brilliant and very friendly always willing to chat. There are many creatures running around monkeys and lemur looking creatures. These are always in the bins rummaging for for food . Don’t leave your bags as they will go through them. The restaurants are great especially the smaller ones, a great variety of food , yes some nights the food was warm but most nights it was hot . Must be hard to to get it spot on feeding so many hundreds of people. But you can eat every night without repeating your self. The on site shops are very expensive , £7 for a medium chocolate bar just an example . But there is nothing outside the resort so they have got you. There is a sports bar (24 hour) . Many tv s showing sports and they provide burgers, chips, hot dogs etc. Burgers are great, very tasty. Great place to meet and drink. Would I go to Mexico again yes I would. Would I stay at the Riviera, sorry no. It’s a great hotel but too big for me that’s all. If you want a fun time with pool party’s and loud music this is for you . Thank you all who work there . You made my stay very pleasant and enjoyable. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Relaxing trip

Dec 9th, 2019

We were in the Platinum area. Enjoyed the extra perks! The buffets were what we expected. The al la cart restaurants were not too good with the exception of the tepanyaki. The Mexican and the grill were also oK. Needs a little extra maintenance in places. The pools were wonderful. The fire show was great. They had live music at times, but no schedule to know when and where. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Excellent location a well maintained resort above average room service with lots of good food, friendly service and an all round well organized resort . It’s the second time visiting this resort in the past 5 years and we weren’t disappointed and we would definitely recommend this resort to any one wanting to visit this area of Mexico.
