Unforgettable experience

Feb 21st, 2020

Try to learn the map asap, there are lots of places to visit and the hotel is huge. Don't miss the shows at the theater every night. It would be nice if the hotel install an elevator near the theater, though. It takes a lot of time to get there if you go with a stroller or wheelchair. The spa is a very nice and relaxing experience. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

The Good, The Bad , and The Ugly

Feb 20th, 2020

The Good Beautiful grounds Nice pools Easy check-in and check- out Baggage promptly brought to room Friendly staff Size of room ( Deluxe) Nice balcony Lots of activities and things to do Beautiful beach The Bad People are allowed to smoke throughout the resort. Most people were not considerate. As a ex smoker, I found this very upsetting. Food was hit or miss Bed was not comfortable- mattress looked pretty old Rooms are dated Towels felt like sandpaper No lotion in the room-I have found that 5 star resort usually have better lotion than I have at home. With that in mind; I didn’t pack any. BTW- they have shoe polish. Had to walk to an outdoor bar to get our own drinks on several occasions while at one of the pools. Unable to get a reservation at one of the restaurants for three days past our arrival date. Too many timeshare solicitors. On a good note, most were very kind and accepted us saying, “No Thank You.” Too many Coati running around. They were in the garbage cans, taking food from peoples hands, and drinking from people's drinks they had next to their lounge chairs by the pool. I know they are cute; they are also wild animals. Ugly Maintenance Issues and Safety Concerns. Please see the photos below. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Had fun

Feb 20th, 2020

Stayed in January with 2 other couples. We were all in Platinum rooms. As others had commented, the whole hotel was kept very clean and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The beach was very nice as were the pools. Because there were so many pools, you could choose if you wanted a noisy party environment or a more quiet setting. I am not a huge fan of the buffets but there were many choices. I am a vegetarian and had many items to choose from. The a la carte restaurants were much better but all of our reservations were at 8:00 pm or after so we always missed the entertainment. There was not much choice for lunch, only buffets or the barbecue at the beach where fries and nachos were my only choice. One thing I did miss was open air restaurants, there are none here perhaps due to the wildlife running around. I enjoyed walking through the huge grounds and liked the coatis and many variety of birds. Overall it was a great trip. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful Property, Wonderful Staff!

Feb 20th, 2020

My friend and I just spent an excellent week at the Sunset. We have to travel on a budget, so we booked the least expensive Junior suite with 2 beds, and had a beautiful room in the third block, second floor. Everything went well at Cancun airport and with Sunwing, their Mexican reps are great--thank you Melanie for making the airport easy--our private transfer was there, and we were off to the resort. This is only our 2nd all-inclusive, so our point of reference was a lovely place in Montego Bay, and honestly The Sunset in Playa del Carmen is our favorite of the two. We had a nice big room, closet, iron and board, a safe, cupboards and drawers, a mini fridge stocked with Sol/water/pop, a really nice shower, 2 sinks, and a lovely big balcony with garden views (and one of the days, the MONKEYS!). There is a lot of walking, but everything is accessible and the grounds are so beautiful and filled with wildlife and birds that going to the lobbies or the beach is a treat, just for the walk. The beach is long and lovely, and yes, sometimes there is seaweed, but they rake in front of the resort, and it's a normal part of enjoying a beach. The water in the ocean was nice and warm, and we found the pool temperatures to be quite comfortable as well. The pools were fun and full of friendly people there to have a good time. We preferred the pool on the left hand side of the path just before the little surf shop/bridge to beach, those 2 bartenders did an excellent job. We only ate at one a la carte, Mamma Mia. That is the only thing I was not impressed with. The buffets, on the other hand, were excellent in terms of variety and freshness, and we enjoyed excellent service in both buffet dining rooms from the hostesses and the servers. Midweek we packed into a van with a guide and headed off for a Sunwing excursion (Again--excellent reps on the hotel premises!!) to Ek Balam, what a great day that was , visiting history that you can still climb on! We began the day with a beautiful Mayan ceremony and a swim in the huge, amazing Cenote Maya. After emerging from the earth we sat down to a traditional Mayan buffet that was beyond delicious, went through the organic and recycle-centric grounds and gardens, and piled into the van to drive through some remote villages and arrive at Ek Balam, where we spent a couple of hours exploring the buildings, including the huge Acropolis. It's a long day, but a good trip. Another day was spent in Playa with another friend who now lives there, we took the shuttlebus in from the Sunset, and met her, walked around, went to Walmart, lol. Lots of shops to see! As for the resort, we just loved it. The staff were all really good to us and looked after us, Mery the housekeeper was great. These people really deserve their tips, we ordered pesos from our bank pre-trip, it is the preferred tip currency. I would recommend this resort to everyone and would happily go back there for another week of adventure and relaxation. Grand Sunset had it all. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Resort was nice

Feb 20th, 2020

OVERALL: The begin, the resort was very nice, it was kept exceptionally clean everywhere we went, rooms were always clean when we got back and our fridge was always stocked. The rooms are huge, even if you just get the Junior suite, it’s WELL worth it to not upgrade because you’ve got everything you need in the Basic Junior Suites and you’re only less than a 5 minute walk from the pools and beach PLUS you’re closer to the lobby, all the food, gym and entertainment. The beach is about a 5 minute walk from the lobby and it’s also super nice, they clear the seaweed and we’re big ocean people so that was important to us. Line ups for drinks was always long at the beach. ROOM STAFF: One thing that really bothered me about the cleaning staff is that every... single.... morning.... at 8:30am, if you don’t have your sign on your door, they will knock on your door and come in without waiting for you to get the door or even have a chance to say anything and have to yell from bed, “YAH STILL HERE”. Every morning around 9 it sounded like they were moving someone out in the room above us. Sounded like there was chairs and tables and things dragging across the floor like they were too heavy or something and people jumping up and down, dropping things. Super annoying. We had a friend who we met here have her wallet stolen right off her dresser as she was going to the bathroom as she left the deadbolt open on the door so her husband could come in behind her in 5 or so minutes. Someone came in, swiped it and left. Her husband also had 500 pesos taken from his drawer.. I know I know, there’s a safe that’s what it’s there for.. but anyways. FOOD: When we arrived we were told that there are some restaurants included but you had to make reso’s. We went to make reso’s 2 days In and the only time we could make reso’s was for 9 or 9:30pm at night. Which really takes a toll on you when you’ve been in the sun all day and it’s hard to wait until 9:30 at night to eat everyday. There’s 2000+ people at this resort and the lady told us they only make 200 reso’s for the 3.5hrs that the restaurant is open for so 9pm is what we got, rest of you... buffet! The buffet is alright, felt it was always cold, the breakfast buffet was the best though. The only lunch areas that are open are the buffet and a hot dog/hamburger stand at the pools and the beach.. would have been nice to have a little diversity and choice for what we paid. The nice thing about not having a reso and a little tip and trick here, is if you go in with a small group or couple and say you talked to the concierge or you made a reso later but you’re going out tonight or something they’ll just slip you in.. they’ll say they can’t but they defiantly can if you’re persistent. Miso is great, we had the late show but the show is quite literally nothing, not worth it, I would have rather ordered what I wanted from the regular menu but the food was good, but it’s a set menu. Fondue was good too. Weird vibe in there and super slow staff. The Italian place was very yummy, loved it there. Mexican place was good and we never made it to the steakhouse. There is 1 place open past 11 and that’s the sports bar downstairs. It’s open 24/7 and if you want to order food late at night don’t bother if it’s busy because you either won’t get it or it’ll take you 45 minutes to get it. ALSO, there is a place called “chill out” on the beach and down to the right. If you do not have it included with your stay, you can go, sit down have lunch or dinner, buy a round of drinks and an entree (per person per room) and have all inclusive access for the rest of your trip. POOLS: The pools are SUPER nice. Love the pools but you basically have to get up at 8am, toss a couple towels on your chairs and leave and come back whenever you want because by 9am there’s no chairs available at the pool we always wanted to go to. There was always about a 30:1 ratio of towels on chairs to people actually there which was kind of frustrating. ENTERTAINMENT: We had a great time here but if you’re looking for a party, it’s not here. I was slightly disappointed in the entertainment late at night, there was a disco but that’s about it and the late shows were always geared towards kids. EXCURSIONS: DO NOT BOOK YOUR EXCURSIONS THROUGH THE HOTEL. It is sooooooo expensive. We bought our excursions on trip advisor and Expedia for LITERALLY HALF THE PRICE. Just make sure to read the reviews and make sure it says they pick you up from your hotel. TRAVELLING OUTSIDE YOUR HOTEL: You get a 50pesos a person shuttle into playa del Carmen from princess that drops you off right on 5th ave, which is super nice and I highly recommend doing so. It leaves at different times in the morning and comes back at different times in the afternoon. Spend a full day there, but the beach is super crowded. When in town check the menus and prices on the restaurants if you’re eating, some are so expensive. Also look into something called “collectivo” If you want to go to tulum or anywhere far. You take the shuttle from your hotel into playa and then find a collectivo van and it’s 40pesos each to go all the way to tulum. VERY WELL WORTH IT. Overall, i actually had a great time here, it was just a little less than I expected and If you can get past a couple tweaks here and there you’ll be golden. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
