Decent

Really makes it look suspect when the shuttle rear bumper is smashed considerably. It's the first thing you notice as you go to enter the hotel. Room was clean. The chicken Alfredo for supper was really bland. I couldn't taste any seasoning at all. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

We needed medical attention at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

We were booked into the Heartland Inn by staff at UIHC. The location was perfect to get to UIHC, and the cleanliness was excellent. We needed to make this medical trip during COVID-19 concerns. The cleanliness was a great relief with COVID-19 in mind. Additionally, the staff was enormously helpful, and they served breakfast and supper. The meals were modest, but greatly appreciated in that there was no need to find a place to get food. The rate was quite modest. If we need to return to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, this is where we will go. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Technology fails

This would be a fine hotel if it could ever gets its act together. The last two times I've tried to book, the computer system was down. The topper, however, was last Saturday I was going to treat my wife to a late Valentine's Day present with an evening in the whirlpool/fireplace suite. At 3 a.m. the fire alarms start going on and off intermittently. There is a fire truck and police car outside the hotel, but lights are not on and nobody is showing any urgency. We called down to the front desk no answer. We try it from an outside line; again, no answer. We get dressed and go down to the lobby where the night clerk is telling jokes to the cop leaning on the desk. I ask if we were in any danger, he shrugged his shoulders. At that point my wife no longer feels comfortable; we pack up and check out at 3:30 a.m. so we can get some sleep. There is no apology from the clerk and his only comment was to ask if I wanted a receipt. I told him to email it. Today I called to register my disappointment. The manager, while apparently aware of what happened, took the day off. I was offered $30 off of a $127 bill, which didn't seem much. The desk clerk gave a "sort of" apology with "it has never happened before and we fixed it." That doesn't really covered our spoiled evening. The clerk couldn't hang up on fast enough, and I was not that combative. I also noted that contrary to code, there was no visual alarm light going off in our room with the alarm. That is required for people who have a hearing impairment so they don't die in a fire. I write this review with some sadness. We reserved a block of rooms at the Heartland for our wedding 10 years ago and from time to time, we liked to use for a weekend getaway, but the technology management is lacking. I have many fond memories of the place, but I doubt we will return after Saturday's debacle and lack of management response. There are newer and better places in Iowa City / Coralville. Great Hotel

This is our third stay at the Heartland and I think the best stay. The breakfast and light dinners were great, our transportation to and from the hospital was great too. Our room was newly renovated with a comfy recliner in our room. The staff went out of there way for us and everyone else I saw. It felt like home. The hotel is quiet, they provide not only a coffee maker in your room but 2 coffee machines in the lobby/eating area. They grind and make all kinds of fancy coffees. We will definitely stay again when we come back to Iowa City. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Convenient for hospital visiting. That’s about it.

When they say “recently remodeled”, what they really mean is that they had to because at one time there was several feet of water from local flooding. The entire first floor had to be completely remodeled. Our room was average. The king size bed was pretty hard and for some reason we only had three of the flattest pillows I’ve ever seen. You had to fold one in half for it to be remotely comfortable. We arrived very late from the hospital so I wasn’t in the mood to bother someone. The free shuttle to/from the hospital was nice. The shower. Oh my. The pressure is pretty weak and if you’re taller than about 5’6” you’re going to have a hard time. The shower head is lower than normal. The TV setup is weird. Lots of channels to pick from but the tech is a little behind the times. Mini fridge and microwave in the room. Both worked fine. The WiFi was bad, real bad. Even in the lobby the next morning it was near useless. I hotspotted off my phone for our stay. Breakfast was good. Plenty of selection. Biscuits and gravy is always a winner for me. Juice was pretty watered down. Good coffee selections but only for very small cups. We missed the evening dinner the night before. Heard it was good. Not many hotels do that so that was nice to hear. Would I stay here again? If I had family at the hospital, yes. They say they have hospital rates, but nothing better than you’ll get same-day online. If I was visiting for other reasons, I would probably look elsewhere. It was a good place, but they could do a little better. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
