New Management Loses Sight of Values

My family has had a property in Cashiers for longer than High Hampton has existed. While not a guest or member of High Hampton, we've always been friendly neighbors, and I grew up hiking the Rock Mountain Trail and swimming in the High Hampton Lake. Recently, High Hampton was sold out of family ownership and, under new management by remotely headquartered Daniel Communities, has begun an alarming development project. While some growth can be expected, the complete and callous destruction of their natural resources is shocking and short-sighted. The High Hampton I grew up with valued and respected the mountains, and proximity and access to natural beauty was part of the appeal to its community. The new management does not seem to share these values, and has departed from the a long tradition of land stewardship. Already they have replaced large portions of the Rock Mountain Trail with a massive road, even bulldozing through the one remaining portion of the historic Cherokee Trace, once a heritage site and landmark of national importance, now simply gravel. They propose to build more roads and sell private lots all the way up the ridge of Rock Mountain, cutting off hiking access by the historic Rock Mountain Trail, and permanently marring the view shed of the entire Cashiers community. As long as High Hampton continues down this path, acting with greed and disregard to both their community and natural heritage, I will continue to speak out against them. I encourage their membership and guests to speak up, as well. Rock Mountain is a treasure, beloved and iconic, and should be conserved for future generations. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

We have been enjoying High Hampton for at least 20 years, usually staying in High Hampton homes. Last year we were disappointed to find the emphasis has changed. No longer are the prices transparent with emphasis on no tipping and you can no longer find out when homes are available on the website. I fear that that the new management is trying to make the place we love slick and upscale. Last August we had issues with our homes that we never experienced before, even though we were paying nearly twice what we had paid the previous year. The lock on the front door didn't work and we had to fight to get it replaced quickly. The internet did not work some of the time until our son was able to fix it. One morning I found a mouse in the kitchen sink. The coffee pot stopped working and I had to make several calls to get it replaced. The house had no kitchen towels and they no longer let guests pick the dahlias, an experience our granddaughter looked forward to every year. Please bring back the old High Hampton. Last time staying here

I've been coming to Hight Hampton Resort for around 30 years, and I am so sorry to see how terrible this place has become. It's apparent that the regular vacationer is not who they are interested in serving any longer. First of all, my room was so disreputable that for the first time in my life, I actually asked to change rooms during a 2 day stay. Room 45 was so dark I literally used a head- lamp to find my way around the room. It smelled of mildew so strongly that I nearly became sick. It appeared that the room may not have been cleaned. There was an abandon washcloth on the porch when I got there. I was able to change rooms before the next night. The staff was minimally courteous. Years past, everyone was friendly and helpful. A nice touch that has gone away was having your name on the table at meals--a small thing, but nice nonetheless. Altogether, this was not a good place to stay, and even though I spent my honeymoon and several trips over the years, I'm sure I won't return. There are too many other places to stay in the area that are cleaner, brighter, and have friendly people. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

We will miss you next year!

We have been going to High Hampton for family vacations for many years. This is not your Holiday Inn, this is a place with charm and history, where families spend time together and actually speak with the other guest. I have stayed at Ritz Carlton's the Cloisters, Grove Park and the Homestead and none compare to the High Hampton experience. The staff here are great - thanks to Andrew, Karen, Joy and everyone else that made this a wonderful vacation. Sadly we will miss you in 2019, but look forward to a return in 2020 to the upgraded property. Oh, and the food is fantastic so much and so good.. They treat guests right which is why families have been vacationing here for generations. To those who complain, go to the budget cookie cutter hotels with cold vanilla lobbies and equally boring rooms and leave this special place to those of us who appreciate what a place like this represents. Very Disappointing

Very disappointed with our visit. The accommodations were probably nice 30-40 years ago but not what we expected at all. Basic room with a tiny attached bath. Carpeting was worn and needed to be replaced. Seating in lobby was also old and worn and extremely uncomfortable. We did not try the dining which was available. We had a family emergency and had to check out a day early. We asked for an adjustment to our fees but we're basically told NO refunds were offered. We will definitely not be returning and would recommend that others consider the cost and what is offered prior to booking. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
