One night in Barbados

Jun 18th, 2020

A last minute business trip brought us to Barbados. The Hilton Barbados looks abandoned. Front desk person was very nice and appeared to the only one working. She did great. Nothing is open on property until further notice. Room was ok. Balcony view of the bay but overlooks the passenger drop off roof. Breakfast is included but will be in a bag. Resturant is not open. A really enjoyable and relaxing 11 night stay

May 13th, 2020

We had 11 nights here in mid March in a premium corner room - room 379 which had views over the Fort gardens and sea via a patio door and balcony and a window view of the beach. I really liked the large room - plenty of space for clothes, and also the double basin in the bathroom but most of all the views. On the balcony was a sort of round sofa - very nice to relax on at all times - they kindly brought us a table and 2 chairs which were useful for an evening snifter. Our room sometimes wasn't made up until 4pm + and to be honest this isn't acceptable. I would recommend staying in the Fort Block as opposed to the Lighthouse Block - nicer views and Bay view rooms are only in the Fort Block which again I prefer to Ocean View rooms, on the basis that you are able to book one, which in the winter months can be a very considerable challenge. We paid for breakfast in the Lighthouse restaurant to be in our package and you could sit outside where the birds could be a nuisance or in the large inside section. I have to say that the breakfasts were disappointing as well as being very expensive- the hot buffet didn't seem to cater for the tastes of the guests staying at the hotel at this time. We enjoyed evening meals in the Careenage bar - good service albeit a little dark and also at the Water's Edge bar - good ambience and lovely views. My partner really enjoyed the beach apart from beach seller' Edward' who was a real and persistent pain and nuisance selling tat jewellery. I appreciate all beaches are open to the public in Barbados but hotel security do need to take action when and where appropriate - he spoiled several guests stay on the beach. The pools are excellent with plenty of sunloungers as there are also on the beach There is a very large car park so you will never have a problem parking your hire car. Cuppa cafe is in the foyer where you can grab a relaxing coffee and snack. The hotel shop run by a very nice and helpful lady is well stocked and there were two petrol stations within easy walking distance that have reasonable convenience shops. If you want to eat out nearby, then Dipper's bar is brilliant - choice is a bit basic but really good. The staff were friendly and helpful and I would particularly like to mention Carisia Ann on reception and Adrian, as on our previous visit as well and finally Nicole on Food & Beverage. The hotel is not perfect but we enjoyed our stay here and would willingly return again. One final point - why is it that it there were no Bay View rooms available fro say Nov to March - block booked to cruise ships/air crew?? TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Fantastic beach & pools, nice rooms, pricey extras

Mar 29th, 2020

LOCATION & ATTRACTIONS NEARBY *** Hilton Barbados Resort is located in the south-west corner of the island, on the outskirts of Bridgetown, approx. 30 min drive from the airport (longer if you take the coast road). Situated on a peninsula between two stretches of awesome beaches – one would be busy Brownes/Pebbles/Bayshore beach and on the other side very quiet and almost deserted Drill Hall Beach. The other attraction, Needham Point Light House was actually in front of our balcony. It’s also a walking distance from the George Washington House, the Clock Tower and the horse race track. There are some restaurants around, but not many shops (drinks/water/sweets/snacks you can buy at the petrol station 10 min away from the hotel). In front of the hotel there’s busy, but quite large complimentary car park. HOTEL OVERVIEW *** This is quite typical, large, corporate, business-orientated style Hilton. There are two main towers of the resort, good swimming pools & recreational area, fantastic beach (surprisingly not many guests go there), plenty of sunbathing and dining options. I like the swimming pools on two levels with many smaller bays and almost private areas for sunbathing. There are many sunbeds and beach towels are provided. You can have drinks from the bar attached and also staff will serve you on the beach if needed. I loved the beach I have to say… The sand is white and like powder and the sea was amazing. You can actually swim in that small bay (which is often a problem in Barbados due to strong currents). PURPOSE OF THIS TRIP *** Leisure RESERVATION *** Booked through Hilton.com – reservation also available in the mobile app. Contacted hotel to pre-pay in advance and this request was also met. LENGTH OF MY STAY *** 3 nights – May 2019 CHECK-IN *** We arrived quite early (far before the check-in time) and we’re advised to wait in the recreational area (swimming pools). Of course, we could use all the facilities and a text message would be sent to us when the room was done. At the end, we’re able to check-in earlier and get our stuff to the room. LOBBY & RECEPTION *** Large, busy open space between the main entrance and the pools on the level below. Very fresh and airy which is great if the temperatures outside are crazy high. There’s great view of the entire resort from reception and directions to all facilities are very clear. ROOM *** I have booked “Ocean View 1 King Bed with balcony” room and it was really good choice. Room allocated to us (#309) was spacious, spotless-clean and comfortable. We had a great partial view of the beach and the lighthouse just below our balcony (with 2 chairs and a table). That was great to wake up to the sound of the sea in the morning. Room was well equipped, which included of course flat-screen TV (I don’t think I used it, haha), coffee/tea machine, fridge (empty). No complimentary water. Air-condition was quite old, but efficient. I preferred to leave doors open as the ventilation was much nicer and the sounds of the waves and birds were really enjoyable. From the balcony we were also able to see the anniversary staff arrangement for the "100 years of Hilton" celebrations. BATHROOM *** Also, same as the room, stylish, spotless clean and fresh. Good quality toiletries were provided (Crabtree & Evelyn herbal/flowery collection). Loved the big mirror with the lights around. There was a shower and a small bathtub. BREAKFAST *** We were on Room Only basis, so we added breakfast locally but only for one of the nights. It is quite expensive (BRL 50.98 = approx. 22 EUR) and I don’t think it was really worth that money. The other days we went outside for some breakfast (10 min walk). Firstly, the breakfast is served in the Lighthouse Terrace Restaurant. I found the entire process extremely confusing and unnecessarily delayed. By the time we were seated (plenty tables free), we spoke to 5 different staff members “arranging table” for us… Hm… OK, if you say so. Selection of the buffet was all right, cold/warm meals, fresh fruit and juices, coffee etc. I was expecting (based on other 5* experiences around the world, incl. other Hilton hotels where you would pay similar price). So, if you can get a rate with breakfast included, do it in advance (or it’s complimentary for Platinum Hilton Honours). But again, it was only OK and it was quite amazing how staff was equally confused with the entire settings and guest seating arrangements. I still don’t get what was creating this chaos… I know, they advise of the possible in the welcome letters (I get this, but this was just wrong work organisation in my opinion). POOL BAR / RESTAURANT *** After this experience with the restaurant, we decided that lunches / dinners we will have at the pool bar (Waters Edge). This was far more casual and actually quicker to be served. Also, prices were much better and meals they served were delicious. We liked all our choices and I found the staff great and attentive (and they were not lost, haha). There is also some coffee point in the main lobby selling some sandwiches and of course coffee… Hm… I think this was the most expensive coffee I have ever had. That was quite annoying. INTERNET ACCESS *** Wi-fi was complimentary and coverage was also quite good, including the beach. CHECK-OUT EXPERIENCE *** As our flight was in the evening, we were again allowed to leave our luggage and use the pool areas for the day. All drinks / meals we were able to pay locally as well. The final bill was accurate and check-out was very efficient. STAFF *** Staff was lovely. Reception very helpful and managing very well with the constant flow of guests. They’re also informative and helpful when needed. The Waters Edge Pool Bar staff was lovely. They’re attentive and welcoming all guests with a smile. Even if on the beach, they’re checking if we needed some drinks or take some orders. Good, pro-active approach. The Lighthouse Terrace Restaurant staff was extremely confused and chaotic. Still nice and talking in a professional manner, but by the time we finished our breakfast, at least three people did the same work asking ‘how’s everything and do we enjoy’ etc. OVERVIEW *** Solid hotel and if booked with a right price, then it’s great. Try not to go with the basic rates (room only), as you’d pay quite a lot for extras. Upgraded rooms are also worth checking as this might be worth it and the sea view rooms are awesome. Beach and pools area are great, no ‘corporate feeling’ there at all. You can relax and completely forget that there’re few hundred people around you (as it’s so spacious and with remote spaces). Did I enjoy it? Yes! Would I recommend it? Yes! Would I stay there again? Yes (but I’d prepare / prepay for few things in advance or try to catch some good prices for meal packages). For various reasons, my wife and I had an unexpected and totally unplanned overnight stay at the fabulous Hilton Hotel complex. We stayed in room 715 and had the most amazing view of the lapping water and golden sanded beach. Everything the hotel is top class although, for us, it’s just too remote. Additionally it comes at a significant financial cost. Just one last thing though, the staff we encountered during our short stay were efficient and organised but, perhaps, could have been just a little happier when interacting with customers - just a thought.
