Not what it used to be

Jun 23rd, 2019

This hotel was formerly the Hilton Garden Inn and service has declined after the switch. Neither the website nor the person who I spoke to when I made my reservation let me know that renovations were taking place at the hotel. Instead of a relaxing stay, I had two afternoons full of hammering on the walls and drilling that sounded like it was coming through to my room. I called the front desk to express my concern on Friday afternoon and was told that the construction would not continue over the weekend. That was not the case so I had the same problem on Saturday afternoon. I would definitely advise specifically asking about construction before you stay here. Hopefully you will receive a truthful answer. Additionally, weekend hot breakfast is advertised as starting at 7:00 a.m. By 7:30 there was still no one there to cook or serve breakfast. Instead there was a table with bagels and pastries. It's a great location, but the service will make me think twice before staying here again. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Good except...

Jun 20th, 2019

The hotel is lovely, clean, and the bartender was fabulous. Breakfast on Sunday was fine. Breakfast on Monday was a disaster that ended with the hostess/waitress yelling across the hotel at us. She had been MIA previously and wanted us to go to the front desk to get a ticket to prove we’d paid for breakfast. We were one bite from being finished. I said I wasn’t going to do that. I asked for breakfast to be removed from our bill, but it hasn’t been. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Nicely Surprised

Jun 13th, 2019

The hotel has changed from a Hilton Garden to The Volunteer. Facility was nice and clean, beds were comfortable and staff was friendly. It is nicely situated right by campus. The entrance is not ideally located behind the Verizon and McDonalds. That's nothing that can be corrected. Sit down restaurants are limited on the strip but the food at the hotel is good. Also had great food and experience at the one sit down restaurant across the street. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

BEWARE re-check your dates if you enter the UTK rate

Jun 12th, 2019

We were visiting Knoxville for a UT orientation so I looked at this hotel (at 9 pm) due to its convenience to the campus, I entered in the dates I needed, room & number of people then noticed there was a UT rate so clicked on that & completed my booking. It was not until I printed out the confirmation that I noticed the website had changed my dates to that same day. I immediately called reservations and they said they could not change my booking as I would be charged a cancellation fee but the front desk could do it at no charge. So I was re-directed and my booking was updated so I was happy UNTIL I got my bill and found out that I had been charged an extra $50 room charge. When I called the hotel to query this as I had not been informed they basically said not their problem. I would have liked to stay at this hotel again for its convenience but will never stay there again as the hotel made absolutely no effort to apologise or possibly give me a break on a future stay, VERY BAD customer service in my opinion. Canceled Our Reservation Without Our Knowledge or Consent: BAD FORM-NOT THE VOL SPIRIT

May 27th, 2019

We booked months ago for UT orientation for May 29-June1. We booked with Hilton when the Volunteer Hotel was formerly the Hilton Garden Inn. As soon as we discovered that the hotel was under new ownership, we contacted the Volunteer Hotel to confirm our reservation, and ensure that they would honor it. They confirmed the reservation. Today, we decided to confirm one more time that our reservation was in place. We were informed that our reservation was canceled. Worse, that their records indicated that WE had canceled the reservation!?!?! We never received notification of this cancellation, and certainly did not cancel ourselves. Suddenly, we are without lodging reservations for our son's college orientation. SHAMEFUL INTEGRITY, Volunteer Hotel. You do not deserve to have the UT 'Volunteer' name associated with such behavior. We have strong ties to Knoxville, and the University. We will be sure to let everyone know of our disappointing experience, and your horrific customer service. A terrible way to kick-off your reputation among the UT family. I am guessing that a WHOLE BUNCH of families will arrive for orientation days in the next couple of months, thinking that they have a secure reservation...and will too be disappointed and without a hotel room for this important time for their family and new UT student.
