Room Design Gone Wrong

Feb 8th, 2020

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express for 3 nights to be close to MUSC for my mom's appointments. There were 5 people in our party, including a toddler and my disabled mom, so we booked a suite to ensure everyone had ample space and privacy. It had two separate bedrooms and was allegedly designed to accommodate 8 people. When we arrived on Friday night, we discovered that, not only was there only ONE bathroom in a suite designed for 8 people, but that one of the bedroom doors would only close about halfway. (So much for privacy) The room was recently remodeled and attached(to the wall) dresser was preventing the door from closing. I immediately called the front desk about the matter. The front desk employee told me that we could move to two standard adjoining rooms THE NEXT DAY.... for an additional charge of $181. Not only would we have to move rooms (and all of our medical equipment), lose our suite living room space, but we would also have to PAY to do so. We declined this "offer", and waited until the next morning to speak with the manager. She came up and looked at the door, seemed very surprised that it was like that, and then told me that she would lower our "offer price" to $161 instead of the previous quote of $180. Of course, we declined again, and I called the corporate customer service line. The man on the phone put me on hold and got in touch with our front desk for them to contact me. The afternoon manager(Cherie?) called me. She was very rude and stated that someone had called her from corporate stating that I had called and complained. She said that she could give me "some reward points". I called corporate back because he had told me to call him back if I wasn't satisfied with how she handled the situation. I received a return call from Cherie again who said that she could offer me a choice of 5,000 reward points (I could later redeem for a $10 Starbucks gift card) OR she would let me out of my current reservation. In other words, I could get 2 cups of coffee or get out. Hmmm. So, we stayed despite the fact that my toddler son woke up early each morning due to lights shining in as my mom got ready for her MUSC appointments. The five of us were able to get dressed in the 1 bathroom and 1 bedroom that had a door that actually closed. Will not be staying at this location or another IHG hotel in the future, knowing that corporate office provides no real help in handling customer issues. Could they not have even sent up maintenance to remove the dresser? Why offer a suite with no privacy or ample bathrooms for the number of guests it supposedly accommodates? Why provide a phone number to the corporate office when you will be directed to the front desk staff you've already addressed the issue with? TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Loved this place!

New construction, rooms were so nice and comfortable and clean. Slept great. Hotel had a pool, fitness center and continental breakfast. Honestly best continental breakfast I have had at a hotel. I ate the egg white omelet with toast, bacon and coffee and even had a muffin because I just couldn’t resist. The food was so good! I was happy to see healthy options. They even had gluten free options available. Nice work Holiday Inn! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Exceptional service

Jan 28th, 2020

I’d like to compliment the management at Holiday Inn Express for the great team/staff they’ve acquired at this property. The check in was prompt and friendly. The room is clean, comfortable bed, new rug and furniture, quiet, beautiful bright bathroom, nice towels. The lobby and lounge area is handsome, clean, smartly laid out, and comfortable chairs. The free breakfast has a nice variety of offerings and is presented very well. Thank you Danielle for keeping everything stocked and clean! She actually came around to everyone eating to check if all was well. I find that kind of service exceptional. Well done Holiday Inn Express! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great stay!

Jan 3rd, 2020

My husband and I stayed 5 nights to visit Charleston for the first time. The hotel rate was very affordable compared to the downtown hotels. This hotel was very clean, and everyone we encountered was very friendly. We had free parking, free WiFi, and free breakfast. Danielle (at breakfast) was extremely sweet! The beds were comfy, and the room was very spacious. At check-in they said they were undergoing renovations, but we never heard or saw anything. We received a room that must have been newly remodeled bc we had lots of plug ins, drawers, and little convenience extras. We drove downtown once and parked in a garage (not sure how much parking was bc the attendant at the exit did not charge us!) We took an Uber to downtown twice which ranged from $10-$15 each way. Overall, this was an excellent choice that helped us save $ for food and sightseeing. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Excellent value and service

Dec 31st, 2019

It is not often that a hotel has it all but this Mt. Pleasant gem does. First, the location is perfect, right across the bridge from downtown Charleston, a short walk to the Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Memorial Park, and close to plenty of great food. Emily, at the hotel, recommended several restaurants in the area that would be good for families with small children and all were very good. We tried Adam's Kitchen specilizing in Greek food, and Grimaldi's Pizza that was thin, crispy and yummy and a local fav Melvin's BBQ just to name a few. We didn't need breakfast since this is provided by the hotel. The breakfast selections were good and the staff was very attentive to the buffet and my needs. I am one that likes to come down and sip coffee while the rest of my group sleeps in a little and I was very comfortable doing so. Overall this is a clean, well-cared for hotel with caring and attentive staff. Do not hesitate to stay here. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
