Okay hotel but outside of Old Town

Aug 22nd, 2019

This hotel is clean & adequate. The posted rates are exorbitant but I was with a group so I think our price was not so high. It has a small lobby with a bar and only one elevator. The breakfast was perfectly sufficient. However, it was a long walk to the shops and the Minster. If you are on a budget, first negotiate the rate. There is a nifty restaurant across the street in the Travel Lodge that has delicious fish & chips. There is also a lovely French restaurant around the corner from the Holiday Inn that has excellent food. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Overnight stay.

Aug 16th, 2019

We booked in and asked for our card details to be held. Making charges to the room is much easier. Got to the bar and and there was no record of our card. We booked a meal for 6.30 but they had no details for us. Tables were dirty in the bar. Food not great. Retired to the room and our keys wouldn’t work. So we had to go downstairs to replace them. Phoned for room service no answer for a while then reception answered saying they were busy. We don’t have much hope of receiving the food before we fall asleep. This hotel feels like its running on a very limited staff ratio and gives the feeling it is a failing hotel. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Well located average hotel.

Hotel is well located and has big car park, which is great. Food at the restaurant, totally overpriced. We tried club sandwiches and we were not impressed with the quality of this dish. Breakfast is well stocked, coffee is terrible and toasts come out burned but overall we were happy with breakfast options. Head waitress was very polite and asked us if everything was ok. Room was of a standard size but bathroom super small. Shower tiles covered with scale/mould, carpet in the room not clean and two spiders welcomed us in the room when we arrived. We've had an old kettle in our room, 2 mugs and coffee/tea/sugar sachets. There was no fridge or water available in the room. Room attendant, such a lovely lady. Changed all towels and stocked us with fresh cups, toilet rolls, etc within literally couple of minutes as she noticed my baby is asleep and she didnt make even the smallest noise. Worth to mention, that during our stay we experienced a fire alarm at 2:30am so we immediately evacuated the room with our toddler and baby. Escape route - so the stairs, were blocked by people. Not sure what was happening on the ground floor at this moment and why people were not moving forward. Seems nobody from staff was downstairs managing the evacuation and directing people. After a while we managed to get to the reception area, nobody from staff was available at the reception but one of the guests that was coming back to her room informed us that it's a false alarm so we can go back to our room. She also mentioned, reception staff doesn't know how to switch off the alarm. We stayed downstairs at the lobby as it wasn't as noisy as in the room. After around 25 mins fire brigade arrived and switched off the alarm. The next day when we came downstairs to chill out in the lobby area, it was full of smoke from the restaurant kitchen. Overall, hotel rooms need a bit of renovation/deep cleaning. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Well located, comfortable hotel.

I chose this hotel primarily due to the price. Most of the hotels in the centre of York were so expensive as I was booking late (3 weeks before our stay) in prime tourist season. There was also free parking, which was plentiful. On arrival we had a warm welcome from Izzy at reception and all staff were friendly and chatty throughout our stay. Despite being outside the city centre the hotel is well connected with buses stopping just outside on Tadcaster Road with a number of regular services into the city. We decided to walk into the centre of York on both days of our stay as the weather was fine and there were some points of interest on the way - a leisurely 30 minute walk straight down Tadcaster Road took us to Micklegate Bar on the city wall and another 10 minutes right to the heart of the city at the Shambles. The hotel itself is a bit tired in some areas but clean and comfortable, with signs of some refurbishment- the room had a usb socket beside the bed and 4 other sockets. There had air conditioning but the room was comfortable enough without needing this. The bathroom had the walk-in shower you find in most Holiday Inns. The bathroom was very small, the only real criticism of the hotel. WiFi was fine, although it didn’t reconnect automatically after initial setup. Breakfast offered full English or continental with a good buffet selection and other items (like poached eggs) cooked to order. No issue with noise despite the proximity to one of the main roads into York. Location, price, free parking and friendly staff made this an excellent choice, which I’ll probably use again on my next stay in York. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
