Interesting combo of historic and updated

May 24th, 2019

The lobby is knock-out impressive, like walking into an Old West hotel, with the dark woodwork, buffalo heads, big fireplace, tile floors. But thankfully the rooms have been updated to Hilton standards and are (mostly) great. I say mostly, because the first night we were assigned to an odd little interior room that had faux windows (frosted so light came in but we couldn't see out) and such a small bathroom that you had to sit on the toilet at an angle to avoid your knees hitting the paper holder. What counter space there was was taken up by their complimentary toiletries try. The next morning we asked to be moved and they graciously complied, and our room for the rest of our stay was great. The hot water in the shower was a bit iffy, but they seemed to be working on that. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Wonderful lobby and heavenly bed!

May 22nd, 2019

We stayed one night after touring the Badlands for three days. We thoroughly enjoyed the hotel, both the public spaces (beautiful historic lobby with a fireplace) and the bedroom(s). We had an unusual set up of two bedrooms separated by the bathroom. Each room had its entry/exit to the corridor. One room had an additional sofa bed, and the other room had a desk, counter top, frig, etc. The beds were absolutely heavenly. I could have stayed there a week! The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. No request was too much: running downstairs for an umbrella, bringing a cellphone that was left in the car with the valet; just top notch. And the area is historic, with several great 1880's-era buildings. The Firehouse Brewery is in an historic fire station. Don't miss it (food OK, wine tasting friendly and good). Rapid City is a fun little place with access to Mount Rushmore. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Upon arrival at 9 pm, there was no valet to be seen. When exiting the car there were homeless begging over the railing of the outdoor bar patio. The music was so loud and the language trashy from the drunk customers. I felt sorry for the hotel rooms above the bar. When making my reservations prior, I had a 20 minute phone conversation with a AJ employee before booking my room, requesting a corner room on the SE side. There was no record of this conversation. I noticed the front desk, when answering phone calls, had to continually ask customers to repeat what they said as the employees could not hear them over the obnoxious noise from the adjoining bar. We were given a West room level with all the outdoor air conditioning units. We had to lug our luggage back down to the lobby to once again request the room we had asked for. We went to the rooftop bar where we were greeted and told to sit anywhere. I asked for water and was told it would be awhile as they were out of clean water glasses. (The customer does not want to hear excuses. Clear one the empty tables, riddled with dirty glasses and wash them.) The waitress said they were quite busy and said "SH**" to describe the situation! While waiting for our drinks bar patrons had somehow made it to the rooftop and one group made an entrance up the flight of stairs to the 2nd level by calling out, "***HOLE" to someone below! How classy. Customers already sitting looked at each other with looks that said, (Can you believe this?). 30 minutes later our drinks arrived which were incorrect. We once again had to request water. Never again. Even though the hotel is historic, it is managed with a tacky hand. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Nice revamp of historic property, great location!

May 16th, 2019

The lobby is stately, yet comfortable. Our room was small, but nicely updated with a Keurig coffee maker, microwave, and refrigerator. Location in the downtown area was excellent for walking to many eateries and bars. Also, dangerously close to a dynamite cookie store just across the street! Hotel guests have access to the Vertex Skybar, which has nice views, but drinks are expensive. Starbucks in the lobby is a convenience for breakfast. The hassle of parking in a downtown area is the disadvantage to this property, as there is no specific hotel parking. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Awesome Historical Hotel

May 16th, 2019

This was our second stay at the Hotel Alex Johnson and it did not disappoint. The staff was nice and accommodating as always; check in/out was very easy and fast. They have an Irish pub (Irish Nachos amazing) and a Starbucks attached to the property. It's in a great location, within walking distance of many restaurants, bars and shops. The only drawback is parking; it is not on-site. You can self park in a parking garage down the street, valet or street park and pay for meters. Breakfast tip: visit Tally's Silver Spoon across the street. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
