Dreadful place, checked out after 12hrs, would've gone sooner
Nov 16th, 2020
Do not go to this hotel unless you are an Italian or a local. We were looked at as if we were from a different planet. The other guests were all Italian families that seemed to just be interested in piling their plates full of food and staring at us. It was a very sad experience as I speak fluent Italian and love mixing with locals, but here we were not welcome. Food was awful, wine was awful, whole place lacked warmth and character, the room was miles away and again lacked any sense of comfort. Couldn't get out quick enough. So disappointing. The town had nothing to offer and not a taxi to be found. You would need your own car if you went to this place, but having travelled Sicily now I would say don't bother coming to this place. We got back on a train and stayed in Taormina. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Breathtaking sunset views!
Feb 14th, 2020
We have stayed at Avalon Sikani Hotel in September, first time in Sicily and we have really enjoyed lovely location of Gioisa Mayera - quite little town with decent restaurants and coffee shops. We were travelling with another couple and were allocated to rooms in second building close to an elevator that takes you right to the main part of the building and reception. The rooms were clean and large, however my favourite was definitely the spacious balcony with breathtaking views over town, I have never seen such a beautiful sunsets! All rooms balconies are facing sea, hence regardless where you stay - the sea views are guaranteed. We have spent some afternoons by the pool, but keep in mind the swimmig caps are mandatory. The location of the pool is also very nice as you will get the sea views while sunbathing. Food was different night to night as we were staying on half board basis, however we always managed to find something nice to eat. During our stay we have been celebrating wedding anniversary and it was quite nice touch from the hotel management to give us a bottle of champagne. I do recommended renting a car while staying in Sicily, as there is a great deal of places to visit however be wary of renting companies - take a lot of photos while collecting a car and report even smallest scratch. Enjoy stay at beautifully located Avalon Sikani. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Hotel in nice spot. But the food is awful!!
Oct 31st, 2019
We stayed in the top tier of the hotel. Its arranged in four blocks up the hillside, connected by lifts and walkways. Takes about 5 -8 mins to get from reception to the top. Our room looked like it had been recently refurbished, so was very comfortable. the problem we had was we went at the end of September. It was full of elderly Italians and Germans who seemed to so out on bus trips during the day. We booked half board, but after two days we decided to leave and find other accommodation, the food was so bad! so was the free wine! food was buffet-style, luke warm at best and very poor quality. The wine was free (on tap) , but a sneak round the back discovered that it was coming out of what looked like a beer barrel. Sorry but I cannot recommend this hotel!!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Quirky, take care!
Oct 8th, 2019
Context: penultimate week in 2019 season, some advertised facilities were closed, inexpensive deal via Travelzoo, weather very good for 1st 4 days then a bit changeable. Take care: not really suitable for disabled or poor physical health visitors, the hotel is a long way up the very steep hillside. Shuttle to & from the local town costs 5 eu each, 5 minute trip, but to the private beach, 10 minutes, is free! Does not operate 2 hours midday or after 6pm. No taxis ever seen in the town, so prepare for a heavy duty climb if you travel outside the allocated times. If you want to travel around you'll need a car, hotel arrangements worked well for us. Transfer from Catania airport is 2 & half hours, be prepared for this! We had a private transfer in a luxury vehicle, great! Beware of the "rules" - swimming caps for the pool are obligatory (3 euros each); you may get, loudly, stopped from taking your bottle of water out of the restaurant; you are allocated a table for your whole stay, disrupt this arrangement at your peril. Reception staff very friendly & spoke good English. Hotel very quiet except at the weekend when loads of Italians turned up and livened the place up. Entertainment (weekdays) 1 girl singer; weekends party time for the children and the adults, karaoke, disco, dancing, line dances, great, very loud, fun! Food: variable, we always found something to our taste but don't expect vast luxury spread of hot dishes, plenty of well prepared pasta dishes, disappointingly there were no pizzas, salads were ok, but almost no puddings, seriously, none at all some evenings, just unprepared fruit. Ice cream at lunch - fabulous, but never at dinner. Gioiosa Marea is a sleepy town with a couple of cafes, and a railway station. Tip: use the train to get to Cefalu, fabulous town. But get back by 6pm to get the shuttle. Shuttle tip - phone the hotel from the town to ask the guy to pick you up. Taormina is well worth a visit, by car, amazing place. Our room was clean, nice bathroom with superpowerful shower and bidet, fairly modern, wonderful view from the balcony. Cleaned daily. TV rubbish for UK guests, but who needs it anyway. So, for us, the week we stayed, we had a great holiday. We used the shuttle a lot, the train, and hired a car. In summary, excellent value for money, Sicily is an inexpensive place to visit, the people are friendly and the cappuccino is served at the correct, cooler, temperature . Just be sure this hotel will be suitable for your needs. Arrivederci! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Disappointing town and hotel needs a makeover
Oct 7th, 2019
We went for a week on 1st October on a bed and breakfast basis so we could enjoy the ‘29’ restaurants in the local town. The hotel is a 2hr drive from the airport and cheap tolls that only take cash. The hotel itself is a bit like a 1970’s council estate with concrete walkways and blocks, something of a maze. The whole hotel needs a makeover so it looks nicer. The room was large and clean with fantastic views and a large balcony. There was water in the fridge but no mention it was €1.50 per small bottle. There was no kettle or tea and coffee and the information pack stated you could not have your own food and drink in the hotel which made us think they were too money orientated. Our fridge didn’t work and they didn’t repair it whilst we were there. Breakfast was average but the staff didn’t smile at all. The town was a good 20 minute climb and there are no taxis or shuttle bus. The town is somewhat run down and only has two restaurants that we could find open. There were a few shops but no bars. We left after three days and drove to Taormina which was more of what we expected. I don’t think this hotel is value for money and a car is essential if you actually want to leave the hotel and you will definitely need to be a competent driver as the roads are narrow and full of Italians in a hurry.
