Hit and Miss

Dec 8th, 2019

The hotel was probably once very nice. The staff, in the main were very friendly and accommodating. We were however left quite disappointed, and dont think it was worth the money. Could have been a lot better. Pros: Location Room decor Cons: No tea/ coffee making facilities in the room Leaky shower, drenching the bathroom Leaky bath, didnt hold water Old lumpy pillows (pillows are a basic essential!) Small selection at breakfast TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful, charming hotel with wonderful staff

Nov 5th, 2019

We recently stayed at the Balzac for 9 days and our visit was wonderful from beginning to end. The staff was extremely courteous and professional, especially Patrick, Stefan and Richard. Patrick helped us get situated when we arrived and was always cheerful. He also arranged to have one of the housekeepers sew buttons onto a sport coat for me! Stefan and Richard gave us great advice on how best to get to the airport when we were begrudgingly leaving, and got a taxi for us that accepted credit cards. Stefan also had the lounge staff serve us excellent coffee while we waited for the taxi to arrive. Our room was cozy and well appointed. The bathroom had a Toto Washlet SG as well as a deep bathtub that was a vital comfort after days of walking Paris. The only minor shortcomings of the room I could name would be that there was no dresser and the pillows were a bit too firm for our tastes. The staff provided softer pillows when we requested them, and we made do with the other clothing storage options (closet and two bedside tables with small drawers). Our view was only of the courtyard but I understand there are other rooms with city views. We were delighted to return to our room each evening, and had a few nights where we just stayed in and were very comfortable. Room service was available 24 hours a day, with different menus depending on the time. We only ordered a few items but of them I think the cheese platter was the best. The room service staff was also polite and accommodating with what might be considered trivial or annoying repeated requests for ice, glasses, cutlery etc. We're not big on shopping but the proximity to Champs-Elysées was convenient for the few items we did need, and there are two Metro stops very close to the hotel. The best petite déjeuner we found was at the nearby Café Lateral, but there were several other options. I am baffled by the negative reviews listed, they are entirely contrary to our experience of the Hôtel Balzac. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Everything we dreamed of

Nov 5th, 2019

This lovely boutique hotel was everything we hoped for when we booked it through Expedia. We arrived mid-day after an 11 hour flight from Los Angeles. The room wasn't ready, but Patrick took care of our bags and showed us to the desk so we could take care of check in. He was incredibly helpful every time we needed anything. The room wasn't large but it was beautifully detailed, exactly as it appeared on the travel site. We weren't thrilled with the pillows, but the staff was happy to find us softer ones. The bathroom was a dream - perfect tub for soaking, a warmed toilet seat and push button controlled bidet, a lovely vanity and good lighting. The only negative about the room is the lack of storage, we only had 2 small nightstands and a shelf in the closet on which to put folded items. This minor inconvenience was more than balanced by the incredibly attentive, responsive staff. We ordered ice delivered to the room every night, it was delivered promptly and with a smile despite the fact that we ordered no food. The morning that we checked out, Stefan was taking care of our bill as we discussed how we were going to get to the airport. He and Richard, who was also working in the lobby, gave us great advice and helped make our trip to the airport much easier than it would have been. Stefan also gave us coffee while we waited, which was most welcome in the early morning after a late last night in Paris. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Dirty, underqualified reception, smelly bathroom, absent managing

Nov 5th, 2019

It's a five-star hotel, so says the fees they are paid in good money well in advance so I accept no excuses whatsoever for a "low-standard" service (to say the very least). Firstly, location. Good but difficult to reach when you don't know the city well. As a tourist, little streets (like rue Balzac) are not well-known for the ordinary layman and this location (l'étoile) is certainly a labyrinth. Secondly, reception. Unadmissible, receptionists don't speak English fluently. Low-standard. This is an excuse to charge whatever they want from your cards. Just as another "victim" stated in this space by TripAdvisor (Mr. agustinhestrada, Dec. 2017, from Thailand), the hotel charges 100 euros per night of stay as guarantee. In other words, having already paid the whole stay in advance, the hotel leaves your card with no money with the excuse of guarantee. Low-standard. Thirdly, managers don't exist. There's a card in the room that invites you to leave an opinion surely to publish it here. That's a joke. There, in action, in flesh, there's nobody to solve a very simple problem. Low-standard. Yes, probably somebody with a title will answer this email AFTER I've left the hotel. Lastly, this very old hotel without necessary reforms has smelly rooms. Unbearable. What's the use of soap or cream when the hotel badly needs a plumber? Of course, there's nobody to listed to your complaint in English, or in any language... TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
