Fantastic hotel in a great location

Aug 20th, 2019

This hotel is so well located, being only a 2-min walk to the pier, a 5-10 minute walk to the harbour and on State Street which is full of restaurants, bars and shops. The hotel is located across a number of different buildings and we were fortunately in the main building. The building across the street located the gym and rooftop pool but all easily accessible. We were greeted on arrival and our car was valet parked with our bags taken to our room while we checked in. The room (King Bed Cordova) was very spacious and clean with a nice break-out area, huge comfortable bed, sizeable bathroom with big walk-in shower and plenty of wardrobe space. WiFi was very good and immediately worked across all the buildings including the adjacent Blackbird restaurant where we ate on the first evening (see separate review) and where you can charge the check to your room. The gym was a reasonable size with new equipment and only accessed by room pass. The rooftop pool has a small sized pool, a hot tub with surrounding seating/ loungers and plenty more seating/loungers on an upper deck. There is good regular waiter service. On Sundays there is now an afternoon/ evening pool party which goes on until 9pm and attracts a crowd of models and the in-crowd of SB. All very cool if that’s your kind of thing. I also have to say the service from the staff throughout was very good. In particular we would highlight Richard, the GM, who not only looked after us on Sunday but ensured on Monday we could get a reservation at the best fish restaurant in town when enquiring where we were eating that evening. Customer service is obviously his forte and something that left a very positive mark on these two guests! Overall, a great hotel. It’s not cheap but what is in Cali in August and we certainly felt it was good VFM versus some of the other hotels we’ve stayed in so one we would definitely recommend. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Jarrett - Had a great stay at Hotel with great event on Sunday night

Aug 20th, 2019

The rooms were great, bed was comfortable, rooms service was delicious. It’s in a great location, and let’s be honest Santa Barbara needed a new hotel in a great location. You are near the fun zone (wine tasting), close to state street venues and close to the harbor. To cap it off these was a great event in the roof top with great music and a great crowd. Instead of spending 500 for a dump in SB, go and spend a little more for a new nice hotel! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful but disappointing

Aug 20th, 2019

I did not find the property family friendly, there seems to be issues with roll-away beds, I appreciate that its not guarenteed but if that's the case they should not be selling a triple occupancy for a queen bed and telling you it will be okay right up to 10pm the night of with no extra bed. Check in is at 4pm, no-one seemed to be able to get a early check-in from what I could see. They send everyone to the pool area to wait! Hotel bar/lounge was closed on a busy Friday night. Beautiful hotel, great bathroom/shower, beautiful rooms, although the closet is VERY small, you cant really unpack. Great location you wont need a car once checked in. The Goat Tree food was great food, decent prices. The Blackbird awful menu, not good food and very over priced in my opinion, $54 for steak. I would go back but not without the guarentee of the right # of beds in the room. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

$800+ Per Night to Sleep on the Floor

Aug 20th, 2019

When we booked a suite at The Hotel Californian, we were asked how many guests would be staying in our suite. We explained four guests would be sleeping in the suite. Upon check-in, we were shocked to discover the suite had one king bed -- for four guests. When we called the front desk to inquire about at least providing two roll-away beds, they told us they were at full capacity and did not have any. Their solution was to provide linens for the settee and linens for the floor for our other two guests. We paid $800+ per night for two of our guests to sleep on a settee and the floor. This is shocking and disgusting. How unaccommodating can you be? To add insult to injury, they felt a $60-80 credit would make up for having to sleep on the floor. Seriously shocking. At check-out, we checked our luggage with the bellman while we had breakfast at a local restaurant. The bellman gave one of our bags to a different guest. While they were searching for the bag, the guest approached us directly to return it. ...Again, shocking. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Lovely hotel but more spaced out than you would think

Aug 20th, 2019

This is a great hotel with friendly helpful staff who cannot do enough for you. The room was spacious and beautifully furnished. One criticism is the bedding - the duvet is one that you would use in the coldest winter never mind the height of summer. The pool surprisingly was in a different building and was very very small. Most people used the beach but if you wanted to use the pool it could get quite busy. Valet parking cost was reasonable and being able to use the bikes and free car was a total bonus and surprise. Lovely stay and would definitely return TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
