Property sits in the heart of Old San Juan by several top attractions
Poor water pressure and spotty Wi-Fi in rooms
Housed in a 17th-century convent, this opulent San Juan, Puerto Rico, property impresses guests with its old-world allures (think: Andalusian tile floors, vintage antiques and mahogany beams). But that's not all Hotel El Convento has going for it: Guests also praise the modern comforts found in every room. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi access, work desks and Bose radios. However, some warn that the in-room internet access is spotty and that the water pressure in showers is weak. But the property's outstanding service and sublime location outweigh its drawbacks. Hotel El Convento resides in the middle of Old San Juan, offering easy access to historic attractions like Castillo de San Cristóbal and El Morro. Plus, vacationers have access to a plunge pool and a Jacuzzi, a restaurant that serves Puerto Rican cuisine, a 24-hour fitness center and a lounge with complimentary wines and hors d'oeuvres every afternoon. As a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World portfolio, Hotel El Convento participates in the brand's INVITED rewards program.

Critic Reviews

There's no longer anything austere about this 350-year-old former convent. All the guest rooms are lavish and inviting, with a mix of wrought-iron and hand-hewn wood furniture, shuttered windows, and mahogany-beamed ceilings joining high-tech amenities like broadband and plasma TVs.

Fodor's Choice

One of the most storied hotels in all the Caribbean, El Convento was constructed in 1651 as a Carmelite nunnery, the first nunnery in the Americas. Though the original building was torn down and rebuilt in 1854, the historic ambiance of the place still harkens back to those early colonial times, thanks to such details as the Tuscan columns that guard the entrance, the exquisite latticed choir and the preserved historic details throughout.

Frommer's Exceptional

There is nothing quite like European-style El Convento in the medieval city of Old San Juan. It was a convent for 252 years, and today it's the neighborhood's principal upscale hotel, offering 58 elegant rooms and suites filled with Spanish antique treasures and modern amenities.
