Employees not empowered...

Jun 15th, 2020

Stayed one night at the Hotel Granduca and expect I will not stay there again. While a relatively minor issue, because of how it was handled - see that the employees are not empowered to take care of the customers. Package I booked included vouchers for breakfast ($23 per person). When looking at my bill after checkout I noticed I only had one voucher. I asked the lady at front desk about it, she said I only showed one person on the booking so I only received one voucher. Had my wife with me so thought it would be an "easy" fix. She said she could not fix, so she went and got someone from the back that might be able to help. All I got from her was the same explanation - no offer to help. Left it with the lady at the front desk saying she would call me that day after discussing with a manager. Never heard anything back. Little shocking that they would treat a customer this way over a $23 credit that was part of the package. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Extraordinary

From the valet to checking out this is a wonderful hotel. The rooms are large, clean and up to date. Everyone was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The bar is terrific and Restaurant Cavour is outstanding. we had breakfast in the restaurant and found it excellent starting with the illy coffee. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great experience before this one

Feb 23rd, 2020

This wasn't our 1st stay at GranDuca and were extremely dissatisfied this time. Upon check-in, we were initially told we were upgraded to a suite. Though a suite, it was an accessible room on the first floor by the elevators and the noise from the lobby bar. Additionally, there was a very prominent low level noise which we can only describe as mimicking a cruise ship engine. We were not going to be able to sleep in this room. We asked the front desk agent to be moved and were told there was only a smoking room and a room with 2 twin beds (I've worked on/in hotels for over 20 years and can't believe there's a luxury hotel with twin beds) which wouldn't work for us, especially for the price we paid. We were later notified by a note under our door that a room with a king was available after a late check-out. This room was satisfactory though the pillows and linens were not that of an upscale hotel caliber so resulted in a poor nights sleep. We went to the bar to have a drink since we couldn't stand the noise in our room. We sat down and we thought the bus person was cleaning the table in front of us but after waiting more than 5 minutes was asked by the same person if we would like a drink. We both asked for dirty martinis but the bar didn't know how to make a proper dirty martini. I highly recommend higher quality olives juice, olives and Blue Cheese for your Martini's, they were frankly disgusting. My wife asked the bartender 3 times to modify her drink to her satisfaction without avail so we gave up and didn't finish our drinks. The bartenders and servers were not attentive either, conversing with a couple sitting at the bar. We felt like we were distracting them from their discussion. Our first experience at this property was several years ago and exceptional but this experience has scarred us. We'll choose to stay at a Westin or other boutique hotel in the future. Shocking...

Feb 7th, 2020

I returned earlier this week from a 4 day stay at The Granduca in Houston. A shocking experience I will probably never forget, resulting in me returning home to the UK earlier than planned. In the early hours of Sunday (2nd Feb) morning, I fell in my room resulting in a hard bang to my head and a very deep laceration to my face, considerable swelling and discomfort. I tried through the night to control the bleeding, but at 6.30am headed to the downstairs Reception to enquire as to where I might go to receive treatment. With virtually no interest in my wellbeing, the lady eventually suggested the Emergency Room of the Houston Methodist Hospital, not offering any help whatsoever and leaving me to work out how I would get there. I remember asking her to apologise to Housekeeping on my behalf for the blood stains on the bed linen! I ordered an Uber and watched whilst she went on her break without a care in the world! Fortunately the Hospital demonstrated much more care and concern for my predicament. I was clearly shocked and confused, trying to navigate a US health system for the very first time. I was referred to a plastic surgeon and received in excess of 30 stitches to my face. I spent the next 2 days largely confined to my room, before deciding I could not continue to LA as planned and returned home to the UK. At no time did the hotel enquire as to my well being, at no time was any routine inspection carried out in my room or formal report written up that an accident had occurred. I felt very isolated and alone. On my return to the UK I wrote to the Hotel Manager via their website, expressing my disappointment that a hotel could treat one of its guests ( a guest at this hotel for over 6 years ) with such disdain and disregard for their wellbeing. I am saddened to say I have still not received a response. The reception was fully aware that I was in difficulty as was the doorman outside. There really is no excuse. So sadly I will never return to the Granduca, and I suggest they revise their protocols for when accidents occur ASAP , and look to show more care for their guests. Shocking and hugely disappointing, in addition to the trauma of the accident itself. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Dusty and Musty

Jan 28th, 2020

We stayed in the Hotel Granduca over the weekend in January of 2020. We read online that it was a five-star hotel, but found it to be a bit weird and certainly dusty and musty. It did not have a clean feel to it at all. Our hallway smelled like a potato storage bin with a few rotten one buried in the bunch. A large dog was barking across the hall from us each morning and this was the icing on the cake. The food is adequate, but nothing special. Lastly, the hotel made some erroneous charges after we checked out and this was not appreciated. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
