Beautiful Hotel, Disappointing Customer Service

Aug 5th, 2019

We stayed at Hotel Icon for my 40th birthday. It was our first visit to this property and we loved it...beautiful hotel, loved our room, gorgeous views. However, my husband's backpack and personal belongings (as well as a few valuables) were stolen from our hotel room while we were out for dinner. We had to call the front desk four different times to get someone to take us seriously. There was no sense of urgency and the staff went so far as to blame us ("are you sure you brought it in?"). When we were finally able to speak with someone in person, they were very dismissive and basically told us there was nothing they could do other than review the lobby cameras and call us the next day. We're still waiting for a call. We were never given the opportunity to speak with the GM and the staff responded with a complete lack of concern or care. I understand they're just trying to "protect their brand", but in this situation, a little bit of good customer service would have gone a LONG way. (We ended up waiting at the hotel until we were able to file a police report.) It's incredibly unfortunate that the staff was disinterested in helping us or showing concern for our situation. This hotel is really beautiful and we would've loved to visit again, but because of their unfortunate customer service, we won't be back. If you do choose to visit, proceed with an abundance of caution and don't take anything valuable!!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Wish I had known about this hotel before.

Jul 29th, 2019

We stayed at Hotel Icon for the weekend of our son's wedding. We had several interactions with different employees that made us LOVE this hotel! First was STEPHEN the valet who parked our car and remembered us and asked the next night how the wedding was. MARIANELA at the front desk took flowers and wine from us to set up in our son's room. DIVONNA in housekeeping even wrote us a sweet note of congratulations and left it in our room. And SERGIO at the front desk helped us with our receipt and information. The room was beautiful, large, clean and cool. The only improvement that could be made is to clean the room windows from the outside, and put some light in the closet...But obviously this hotel is well-run because of the competent employees. They do more than just their jobs...they make you feel at home and pampered at the same time. This is a luxury hotel with mid-range prices. We thought it would have cost a lot more than it did. Good job, Hotel Icon. We'll come back and we'll tell our friends about you. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

First visit since it became a Marriott property

Jul 21st, 2019

I was pleased to see that Marriott maintained the kitschy banking theme that makes this historic property special. And now I get to use my Marriott points and free night certificates here when I visit Houston. The rooms are clean and I had a spacious bathroom. The breakfast was excellent, and free, at least for Platinum Elites. Real eggs! An omelet station! My only gripe is that the elevators are slow, and get crowded when everyone is leaving for dinner. So give yourself few extra minutes to get to the lobby. Also, the complimentary car service gets busy around dinner time, so make sure you know how to use Uber as a back up. BTW, in Houston, Uber has designated pick up/drop off spots. They can't always just pull up to where you are. The spot nearest the hotel is at Market square. It's about a half a block away at the NW corner of Congress and Travis. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

First time at this property

Jul 19th, 2019

Excellent service and attention. The welcome was unique and interesting. The staff at breakfast couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. The disappointment was the very strong odor of mildew coming from the AC vents. Not totally a surprise given the age of the building. I mentioned this upon departing and I am sure it will be addressed. The overall experience was very nice. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
