Immaculate hotel! With a cancelled elopement due to COVID, I decided to take a little getaway with my fiancé and to be honest, I was a bit hesitant. I'm happy to report that there was no need to be! Hotel Joaquin took great preventative and cautious measures to keep the space safe and clean - starting from gloves, anti-bacterial spray, and masks up front when you enter the property to a COVID release form required by each party that checks-in. I was even informed on my way to the property that my room was being upgraded because of our circumstances - HOW AWESOME IS THAT?! Normally, it'd be a bummer to have the restaurant closed, but during these unprecedented times, it was actually enjoyable to use the outdoor tables with heat lamps to order in from various local spots and hang out. My fiancé and I did not have a single issue sitting in the common space and everyone was very courteous of distancing while eating without masks. The room experience was lovely - I personally really appreciate not having TVs. Hotel Joaquin provides a record player in each room with a cute library of records and games. We spent a lot of time off-line and it was so refreshing. In addition, the hotel provided complementary coffee and pastries every morning and personally texted the evening prior to ensure a good time for delivery. LASTLY, the front/reception manager and bartender Cody was an absolute delight. He was very friendly from the moment we entered the property in showing us around and explaining all of the new protocols and continued his excellent service while shaking up drinks! My first night, I asked for a spicy tequila beverage and he didn't have proper supplies to work with and then let me know the second night of my stay that he personally purchased jalapeños on his way to work if I was feeling up to enjoying a cocktail. This small gesture meant everything to me - the best form of customer care - and his drinks (I had a couple with spice) were delicious! The hotel and its guests are very lucky to have him! All in all, a GREAT stay. I will definitely be returning! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Tranquil and gorgeous

Nov 30th, 2020

We spent 3 nights here over the Thanksgiving break. It's a gorgeous place and a great alternative to an airbnb or huge, sterile resort. Staff were very friendly and I'd recommend it to friends. Would def check out again (ideally post covid so we can experience the restaurant and bells and whistles not available now) . This isn't a 5 star resort but it is more interesting and personal than that so there is a compromise you're choosing. The rundown: PROs: Our room was probably the best they had. Auric (14). It was lovely waking up to the views of palm trees, the pool and a distant ocean view. It also had a great balcony you could lounge (as opposed to other balconies that had small table/chairs). Covid precautions - they took this very seriously. Contactless check in, masks and sanitizer everywhere, masks worn. All room service, requests, communications were via text, which was efficient for me. Steps away from a magnificent beach. About 5 min walk to the start of the main drag, everything was walking distance. Also, they had great bikes that we borrowed. Landscaping and grounds and overall decor is A+. The room was slightly more tired than the pics showed but overall I was so happy to see that the place was just as good in person as it is online. Also, the pool is amazing. It was super quiet and tons of lounging available. CONs: There was some funky, mechanical noises that kept us up one night. I mentioned something to the manager and they were happy to move us to another room. Decided not to b/c we love Auric so much. I think they did comp the resort fee for us that evening. Resort Fee - $45 is high for what you get. Due to covid, no daily housekeeping (they did replace towels though), the breakfast is weak (scone and coffee). TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Peaceful, quiet, clean and excellent customer service!

Nov 29th, 2020

As soon as you open the front door of this hotel you feel at peace. A glowing, warm fire and friendly staff welcome you. I love boutique hotels and this one did not disappoint. We enjoyed a quiet, very comfortable room with the best hotel bed we have ever experienced (better than Montage). I asked them about the bed frame and they advised it was custom made. We were so comfortable and slept like babies. The pool was the perfect temperature and we enjoyed a view of the ocean with a tasty cocktail made by their bartender. Everything was COVID safe and spotless. The location is amazing with great food options, Heisler Park, and Shaw's Cove beach all steps away. Every morning we enjoyed complimentary coffee (we each had a pot) delivered to our door, at the time we requested, with a scone. Great hotel - I highly recommend! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful hotel & pool; broken a/c & fire drills

Nov 29th, 2020

My husband & I chose to spend our last day of our vacation at the beautiful Hotel Joaquin. Upon our arrival to this stunning hotel, the check-in is not evidentially obvious as no one was present at the hotel entranceway to indicate that the check-in counter was located at the bar. After a few minutes of standing awkwardly behind a patron, the man behind the bar finally inquired if we were checking-in. As we chose Hotel Joaquin as our destination to help guide our minds away from these times of stress and anxiety, we inquired prior to check-in if it were at all possible to get a room upgrade to a waterfront view. Understandably, the manager indicated we could upgrade with a $100 fee, in which we politely declined and settled that we would be ok with the room we chose, as we would most likely spend most of our time by the pool/beach. As the manager kindly showed us around and walked us to our rooms, we were slightly disappointed that we were placed in a ground floor room, directly facing the road with cars passing by (room #5). But we ventured on, and agreed that we would mostly be spending our time at the pool/beach. As we arrived back to our hotel room after dinner to settle in, the room became quite warm. We fiddled around with the air conditioner and set it to 64 degrees. Thinking that perhaps the a/c took some time to cool the room, it became warmer and warmer to the point of waking up my wife at midnight, drenched in unbearable heat, checking the a/c remote to indicate that the room temp currently was at 76 degrees. We passed on some text messages to the person attending to the hotel at this time, sending pictures of the remote to ensure that we were not the stupid ones who did not know how to work the a/c remote! The hotel attendant checked the fuse and kindly came to our room to check that, yes, the remote was working but the a/c unit was not blowing cool air. We were unable to have the room windows open as the noise from the cars passing by were incredibly loud. The hotel attendant came back to our room (at this point it was almost 1am), the attendant’s solution was to bring us a table fan, indicating that if the a/c did not cool down the room in 15 minutes, to plug in the table fan ... and finally we (the guests) strongly suggested that if possible, we could be moved to a different room to get a few hours of decent sleep. Finally by 1:15am, we were allowed to move to a second floor room (room #24) with a view of the ocean and we were able to sleep at least 5 hours in a room with a working a/c unit. As the following day was so beautiful, we were excited to spend the day at the pool, which we found out was “closed until further notice”. As my wife was quite disappointed with the night’s events on top of not being able to enjoy the hotel pool, she asked to have a discussion with the manager. The hotel attendant returned and promptly said the pool would now be opened. The manager did not make an appearance. We enjoyed the heated pool and the luxurious cabanas, hoping to catch up on a bit of sleep by the pool, we were startled as the hotel had started testing their fire alarms throughout each room. At no point from check-in to check-out were we warned that there would be incredibly loud alarms blasting across the property during our stay. If this were the case, we probably would have chosen to take a nap by the beach or grab lunch off the property. At no point did management initiate discussion regarding any of the numerous issues we experienced during our stay. My husband and I have had to spend the majority of the last 9 months apart from each other due to the pandemic. We finally had a chance to get away for a few days together. We chose Hotel Joaquin, Laguna Beach to “spoil” ourselves on the last day of our vacation and unfortunately, it was not a great end. Hotel Joaquin is a stunning property, very calming to the eyes. Unfortunately, it was by no means calming to our souls. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Worst management & service experience from a hotel

Nov 15th, 2020

I couldn't wait for my much anticipated stay at this lovely hotel, having done extensive research on hotels in the area and picking Joaquin. Before taking off the next day, I saw that the weather had turned for the worst. Because it had passed my cancellation period, and it would rain all weekend, I called the hotel about what I could do. Front desk had the manager call me back, and to my dismay, the manager told me he normally could partial refund if I had booked through a third party, continuing to explain that because I booked through their website during a seasonal promotion, this could not be given. This did not make sense to me at all. Smaller boutique hotels usually have the power to make their own decisions rather about how to resolve issues with guests than follow strict "rules" over third party travel websites, especially during times like these. I had not asked for a full refund, and was rather seeking to come back another time for some form of payment with another discount. I mentioned many solutions, including one day credit, service vouchers, etc, all which were turned down. I called multiple times with no return call. Of course the area received record rains & winds that weekend, and I ended up not being able to go. I called for an invoice after being charged for the weekend including hotel fees & taxes. After getting off, I have yet to receive the invoice. I was told another manager would call me back to discuss options, and I was just ghosted. I know many have written wonderful reviews about this hotel, and I am sure the location and amenities are top knotch under normal circumstances in good weather, as the main attraction is their beach under the sun. Under less ordinary circumstances, however, don't expect any empathy, concessions or even courtesy to help resolve issues from them. Words of caution, DO NOT book directly with them or at all. Had I known, I would have booked through a third party to negotiate during these circumstances than to deal with the hotel directly, or consider staying somewhere else. The management will not take any responsibility for any issues. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
