Golden Wedding Anniversary holiday

Nov 11th, 2019

We went to Riu Palace to celebrate our Golden Wedding. Riu couldn’t have been more helpful in making it such a memorable occasion for us. We some interjection from our family back home we were upgraded to a Ocean View room, our room was decorated with a cake and champagne delivered to our room, a beautifully decorated breakfast table with a singing waitress and to complete the day we were treated to a romantic meal on the beach. Great service

Nov 10th, 2019

I highly recommend this resort. The money spent is so worth it. Our room had a few issues but the resort itself and the staff were amazing. Also the entertainment team made the day at the pool fun. We will be back again TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Nice place

Nov 9th, 2019

My wife and I are at the end of a 2 week stay at Riu Palace. We have stated at many Riu hotels all over the world and would put this place at the top of the pile for overall quality of experience. There are some areas which could be improved upon and others which are outside the control of the hotel but impact on customer enjoyment all the same. Food. The hotel has a main buffet dining room and 3 speciality restaurants. These are operated on a first come first served basis, bookings aren't taken. I cannot comment on the speciality restaurants as we didn't use them as the buffet is so good. Food quality and choice in the buffet is great. I loved the choice of smoothies at breakfast, very rare to see at all inclusive hotels. I would like to have seen more cold fish options like tuna and anchovies etc. Overall, one of the best buffet restaurants I have seen. Pools. 3 pools. I would describe them as, 1 Noisey, Hanover bar pool. Lots of activities and music. 2 Volleyball. A net is installed in the afternoon and you are likely to be hit by a wayward volleyball if your lounger is next to this pool. 3 Quiet pool. Lime bar pool. More layedback, no loud music, apart from the bleedover from the next door hotel pool bar at Riu Reggae and you get left alone by the entertainment staff. So they have a pool what ever your mood. Bars. Havover and Lime are the 2 swim up bars. Very different as described above. The snack bar close to the beach is 24hrs and quite nice. If you drink in the bar area then you are trusted with proper glasses to drink out of. Plastic cups are given if leaving the bar, which is understandable. I can't enjoy a drink out of a plastic so always drank in the bar area. I have to mention Paul who works behind this bar, great fun and very good at his job, enjoyed out chats. Lobby bar is a nice cool place to enjoy a drink. They all serve Red Stripe and Red Stripe Light on draught. A wide range of tastie cocktails, love the Mudslide! Lots of international brands, Absolute vodka vanilla, raspberry, Jim Bean, Baileys to name a few. What really impressed me was the speed at which staff served customers. Very little waiting around. Alternatively you could not bother going to the bar as staff will approach you in your lounger asking if you want a drink. Rooms. Our room overlooked the central courtyard area and had a sea view of sorts. Large TV on the wall, not that we used it much. A well stocked mini bar in fridge restocked every day. Gordon's gin, Smirnoff vodka, Appleton's rum and Johnny Walker whiskey are all literally on tap in your room. There is a coffee maker restocked daily. Jacuzzi bath is very nice. Shower is spacious with a nice ceiling mounted rain style head fitted. Bed is comfortable but the pillows let it down. 1 pillow wasnt enough and 2 was too much, it might seem a minor niggle but the pillow problem caused me interrupted sleep. Air con and ceiling fan kept the room nice and cool. Good sized room safe. His and hers sinks were a nice touch Toilet roll dispenser was a pain in the proverbial! It has a spring loaded cover which it so strong that it renders it unusable, again, its a little thing but an easily resolved issue. Rooms, in fact everywhere in the hotel is kept very clean. Wifi. You can log 4 devices per room into the hotel wifi. I had 5. To log in the 5th device I had to disconnect one of my other devices first, they wouldn't allow you to have 5 logged in at any time. Speed is reasonable, I was getting 25 to 35mbps in my room. It was a bit patchy around the pool. It did drop out quite a bit which was annoying. Aircraft noise. Now I accept that this is out of the control of the hotel but you should be aware that the hotel is right under the flight path of departing flights from nearby Sangster airport. Nice quick transfer = aircraft noise. Aircraft departures are at the busiest middday to late afternoon. On one day it was really bad, every 7 minutes. The noise is such that when a flight passes over I couldn't speak to my wife even if I shouted. Some people say they don't notice it once they get used to it, but I didn't get used to it and it became very waring and annoying. Gym. The gym at this hotel is very small and pokey, not a pleasant place to spend time. It was as if they forgot to build a gym so used a small room tucked away in the bowells of the hotel as an afterthought. Its got some CV kit, a multi gym and free weights. I used the hotel gym daily but didnt use this one. I went next door the the Riu Montego Bay. The kit is a bit older but it is much bigger with loads of kit and was a nice place to spend some time. I have to mention the guy who works in this gym, sorry I'm terrible remembering names. On the first day I used the gym he shook my hand/fist bump, introduced himself and was very helpful. He has loads of knowledge, not only about how to use the kit properly but technical knowledge about how to train. He showed me some great floor techniques. Message to management: You have a diamond there, make sure you keep him and allow him to use his skills and knowledge. Staff. Hard working and friendly. A nice bunch of people. Beach. Sandy/gravelly beach. Water no good for snorkelling as it is very cloudy. Sea is nice and warm. I spent alot of time in the sea, good for swimming as the sea is quite flat. Power cuts. The hotel seems to suffer from alot of power cuts. Most only last a minute or so. In the daytime it just means the wifi is out for a few minutes but in the evening everything goes completely dark. Not sure if this is external supply issues. Water Sports. Unpowered stuff is free, like kayaks etc. You have to fill in a disclaimer form before you can take anything out though. We went on a catamaran party boat trip. 4hrs for $59 each. This involved snorkelling and a visit to The Strip/Margaritaville. Free bar on board. Wish I hadn't bothered. The music was painfully loud, I got as far away from the speakers as possible but it was difficult being trapped on the boat. The snorkelling was a joke, very little to see and The Strip.......don't bother. The locality. If, like me, you don't want to spend all your time around the pool and like to walk out of the hotel and check out the locality you may be disappointed. There isn't really anywhere to walk to. A shopping centre with shops which sell all the same stuff, hats, fridge magnets, rum, flip flops etc. Nothing of interest to see. Overall this is a good hotel with good quality food and drinks. If you are looking to chill out around the pool or on the beach whilst enjoying a cocktail or three then this is the place for you. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
