This historic boutique hotel sits amid Berkeley's downtown arts district, just steps from the U.C. campus and a short walk from the Gourmet Ghetto. The elegant property emphasizes its turn-of-the-20th-century glamour (the Shattuck was built in 1910), but from HDTVs in every room to eco-conscious business practices, the hotel is completely upgraded and modernized.
Peace is quite posh following a $15-million renovation and greening of this 100-year-old downtown jewel. A foyer of red Italian glass lighting, flocked Victorian-style wallpaper — and yes, a peace sign tiled into the floor — leads to comfortable rooms with down comforters, and an airy, columned restaurant serving all meals. Accommodations off Shattuck are quietest; cityscape rooms boast bay views.
