Great 2nd visit to adults-only hotel

Jan 27th, 2020

Second visit at a great resort. STAFF Whether it’s due to the time of the year (January) or something else, but there are very few entertainers around the pool during the day. Regardless, many of the staff are outstanding in what they do. Victor at the front desk got us all set up for check-in and restaurants. Silvester and Omar are awesome as butlers - do more than we ask for, and then some. Always around, always with a smile. Buffet staff are top-notch. Great omelettes by Querle every morning. Pocho is one of the best waiters around. And Yari… pretty sure I mentioned her in review from our first visit... still an amazing hostess! Special thank you to Adrian (Hot Chocolate) for everything. Made this vacation so much more fun. Not to forget everyone else - check-in desk people, cleaning staff, girl that hands out towels by the pool, waiters in the restaurants, great staff at the spa... PROPERTY Very well-designed and maintained. 4 resorts at different luxury/star levels: Dominicana & Punta Cana (families, lower pricepoint), Bavaro (families, mid-level), and Grand Bavaro (adult-only, highest level). No modern glass/concrete emptiness. Rather - plenty of trees and plants all around. Regular environmental additions, like Ecological Zone plant nursery (just outside of the entrance to Grand Bavaro), Coral Lab (on the beach between Grand Bavaro and Bavaro), room service updates (see below), etc. Property is growing and adding new levels. Coral Level at Bavaro, upcoming villas and Grand level for families (separate property, yet to be built). ROOM Some reviewers mention the need for update... this is up to everyone’s preference. Overall - nice room, bed, jet tub. All of the soap/shampoo/lotions are now in refillable containers. Drinking water is in refillable glass bottles. When changed (daily), bottle is sealed with the label noting day of the week. Dominican chocolates in the room (dark and white) and stocked fridge with soft drinks. Nice beach bags for each room (!) FOOD Both buffets are great as far as food selection and freshness goes. Iberico ham, seafood paella, lobsters, crabs, steaks - not your standard buffet fair and sets the level for the place. A la carte restaurants are awesome as well. We got the reservations done for entire week on check-in, but you can also do this through butlers as needed. So far we haven’t found a bad one - all are excellent. Hashira (Japanese) has an interesting way of serving. You pick from the menu like in a regular a la carte restaurant, but have flexibility of choosing the main dish to be prepared live on teppanyaki table if you feel like it. This makes it more flexible when compared to the usual Japanese restaurants, and gives more options for items like sushi. La Tentazione (Italian), El Galeon (Surf & Turf), Le Tourbillon (Gourmet/French) and Casa De La Playa (Mediterranean) are all very good. Would gladly go 2-3 times to each one. BEACH Extremely windy. Hasn’t been in DR in January in many years, so perhaps it’s normal. Red flag throughout our stay and occasional downpour. This said - we had great time on the beach daily - no seaweed, nice water temperature, sun and waves. Overall - depends on your preference, but we enjoyed it. The beach is large and walkable to other properties (including non-Iberostar ones). Very few vendors (there’s a separate area with stationary stores off to the side in case you want to do shopping/haggling). POOL Pool itself is great once you get into the water. However - good luck finding cabanas! This is a HUGE change compared to our last visit, possibly due to a different time. It is absolutely impossible to get a spot after 8am when the towels go down and people who drop them leave FOR ENTIRE DAY. We’ve been at resorts where this is dealt with by removing the towels from unused (no drinks/books/slippers) beds on a regular basis. And Iberostar claims they enforce it, but it’s far from it. By far the biggest disappointment of this trip, though we managed to deal with it by avoiding the pool and spending time on the beach. ENTERTAINMENT Great theater and good shows. A nice mix of old and new, pop and rock, English and Caribbean (Dominican, Cuban) during our stay. Note that the shows start closer to 10pm, so plan your dinners accordingly. Live music in the hotel lobby and on the boat afterwards. FACILITIES Gym and wet area of the spa are worth visiting. First of all - it’s complimentary. Second - great views of the beach and ocean. We also got a chance to try massages and facial (for wife) - all are quite expensive (as the case in most all-inclusive), but well-done. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Fantastic Resort

Jan 27th, 2020

My husband and I decided to pick the Iberostar the grand to vacation for Christmas and New Year! We arrived Christmas eve. Well when we got to the resort it was all lite up with Christmas lights. We had our photo taken with Santa! Our first butler Marggie was really friendly and willing to make us feel at home and to have a wonderful vacation. She moved us to a room which for more suitable to my needs. A accessible room with a roll in shower. Bars in shower and on toilet. It was perfect. Once we moved Marggie still always checked to see if we needed anything in our room. But we then had Stahling and Alby that looked after us as well. They are all had working people that make your stay at the resort nice. The animation team YoCari, Ruth, Hot Chocolate and Execelente entertained us with games at the pool and did a good job as well. Waiter staff Samuel, Wilfredo, Enerico, and Nelson were all in the buffet area making sure you got your drinks and helping me get my meal. Kudo's to all of you if we missed mentioning you by name. We loved relaxing at the pool everyday. The pool bartenders were awesome at having fun but also making sure you got a drink if you wanted one. Robert and Ery to mention a few. Everyone at Iberostar the grand were amazing and helpful. Thank you for making our vacation real special and relaxing. We will return to this resort for sure in the future. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great resort with great staff

Jan 27th, 2020

It's taken me a while to write this review but here it is. My husband and I traveled to the the Dominican at the beginning of December and stayed at the Grand. We had been to the Grand in Mexico twice so I my expectations were high. The first thing that impressed me was the private shuttle from the airport to the resort. I don't know if they do this every time but this was the first time we got such VIP treatment from the airport. We didn't have to wait an hour for our shuttle to take us to the resort and didn't have to stop at a bunch of resorts on the way there either. I did not appreciate getting fingerprinted at the airport though. I was so not expecting that. Everyone arriving to the Dominican must get fingerprinted. It's a pretty low budget airport. Every passenger must cram into a bus which brings him/her to the airport terminal after getting off the plane. Waiting for the bus is the longest part. The planes land too far from the terminal. The restaurant/food selection inside the airport when you're waiting to go back home is pretty varied though. Something to please everyone. We had a garden view room with a partial view of the ocean which was great. Our room was clean and very quiet which I loved. The bathroom is quite small and actually, so is the room. We had a hard time figuring where to put our luggage in the room. Yes, you can see shadows of people through those blinds they have in the bathroom. Whose bright idea was this to put those? Seriously? Also, if you have thick hair, you will curse the shower heads because the water pressure isn't the greatest at rinsing out the shampoo in your hair. We had reserved our À la carte restaurants online before we left and I don't know why so many people complain about getting reservations at the restaurants. Maybe it's the time they choose because we have NEVER had ANY problems with getting reservations at the restaurants we wanted at any resort. You can download an App on your phone called Iberostar Hotels and Resorts and you manage your reservations from your phone which is great. The food at the buffet was good, not great, but good. The hot foods needed to be hotter and the cold foods needed to be colder and if you like salt on your food, bring your own salt shaker. The humidity in the salt shakers, even though there was rice in them, prevented the salt from coming out. If you love Sushi, you'll be in heaven. They have a wide selection of Sushi at suppertime. The pools were awesome. I doubt that they were heated but they were warm yet refreshing. I don't usually swim in resort pools because I like my water warm but I went in the pool every single day I was there. You will get a sheet of coupons to use at the resort probably on the second day after you get there. Do not book or buy anything until you get those coupons. We made the error of buying jewellery in their jewellery store and could have saved a significant amount of money had we waited for the coupons. You live and learn. My favourite restaurants were the Italian and French. The surf and turf was okay, but just okay. I don't eat Japanese food so I didn't try it and we didn't try the Mediterranean either. My husband was ill so we had to cancel many of our À la carte reservations and no, he was not sick because of the resort. Of course, the beach in Punta Cana is exquisite. Long walks every day in both directions. The vendors on the beach are beyond pushy. Do not even make eye contact or you'll regret it. If you are shopping for souvenirs though, their prices are very good. To have your picture taken with either a parrot or a monkey on the beach costs $12 each and the picture is downloaded to your phone and you are responsible to get it printed once you get home. We spent many days at the beach and saw all kinds of vendors walking up and down the beach every day. Some are pushy but usually respect you when you tell them you're not interested. The bartender service by the ocean is next to non-existent. If you want something from the bar, you have to go and get it yourself. My husband and I are French speaking and found that many of the staff do speak French even if they are not from Haiti and there are many French speaking tourists too. The entertainment at night is top notch, better than the Paraiso in Mexico. We took in each show while we were there and loved each one. Some of the staff which deserve to be mentioned are: Mini Me whom I recently found out is no loner working there. He had been at the resort for quite a while. Everyone going to the Grand had heard about that special young man who was "en fuego". We had the pleasure of meeting Ruth who is part of the entertainment crew, Erbin at the Bella Vista Restaurant, such a sweetheart, Raquel, the head concierge, Maria at LaBrisa Restaurant, Jesus who helped my husband with his chair set up on the beach, Edward, the concierge, Javiela at the Bella Vista Restaurant and our dear "chérie" Lorraine who works at Le Tourbillon and Bella Vista. I must say that the thing that impressed me the most is that every time I spoke with one of the staff members, every time I'd say, I guess I should let you get back to work, all of them would reply "but I am working". Spending time speaking with their guests is part of their job which makes the guests feel important.I loved learning about their culture and customs, especially being there just before Christmas. The boat was closed for renovations while we were there which was a real letdown. I was so looking forward to going on the boat and seeing its inside. Would we go back one day? Probably, if the price is right. Enjoy your stay at the Grand Bavaro! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Relaxing

Jan 25th, 2020

Just returned from our 2nd visit to this wonderful resort. The staff continue to be friendly, accommodating and will go out of their way for you. The grounds are meticulously kept, housekeeping was superb, the butlers were great, and the star entertainment crew was amazing. They remembered our names and are full of positive energy. “Baby Face”, “Hot Chocolate” and all the girls were fantastic. The food was great, didn’t care for the Italian restaurant and hibachi was okay (other Iberostars we have stayed at were better). Since our last stay, we noticed a huge difference in drink consistency and more staff speak English making it easier to communicate. They also have top shelf alcohol, bartenders were great, and none of the drinks are watered down. The nightly shows were good (didn’t see them all). We had a few favorite pool waiters (Tobia) that made awesome drinks! The only negative comments I have are that the rooms aren’t cold enough (can’t adjust the AC), not enough outlets in the rooms and their wasn’t a fan in the bathroom. (It got hot after you took a shower). Other than that, we had a fantastic time and would recommend this resort! We also did the “Escape Room” which was next door at another Iberostar, and had a really fun time! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Very kind staff

Jan 25th, 2020

We had a very nice stay. The staff is very kind positive and entertaining. We especially liked babyface and excellente who made the stay enjoying. Ery from the pool at is also a very enthousiastic and runs for you to serve you the best. They are all full of jokes! Congratulations with this staff. One negative thing is that all the a la carte restaurants are inside and that these restaurants are quiet boring. The staff here is very kind though! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
