Across street from Notre Dame Univ

I have stayed here twice,once in June,and then a few days ago for a funeral. Both times was excellent stay,and clean room. Would be nice if the rates I paid were the same for a Notre Dame football weekend,but all hotels then are very high rates. For football games,there is free shuttle to game from St Marys field,across the street from Inn. Kim,the manager was helpful with a billing question;thank you! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Nice Hotel Missing the "Nice"

Here's the story: This is a really nice hotel if it is not in the time of coronavirus. Due to COVID-19 concerns, every possible amenity has been removed. However, the rooms are very nice, clean, and comfortable. Nice, professional staff-person upon my evening check-in (can't speak highly enough of her), but rudest front-person-ever when I checked-out. I get it. It's a hard time (She even said to me, "It's a hard time." We are all having a hard time. Leave your troubles at home lady.) Her "It's a hard time" comment was in response to my statement that if they don't have fresh fruit (they had a bowl of rotten fruit next to granola bars) just don't do it. By all means, don't put rotten fruit out for guests. She told me to come back when there wasn't a pandemic. Yeah, I don't think so. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Not so great

The hubs & I recently travelled from CO to CT during COVID pandemic. I booked our stay based upon a July review that mentioned traveling during pandemic. I called the hotel directly and spoke to a really nice young woman. She reviewed the COVID cleaning protocol & assured me that every effort was being made to keep customers safe. Even though there is signage on all doors that say masks are required, NO one in the lobby area was wearing a mask except the front desk clerk. The hotel is old and worn and the photos on line do not match the actual room. The carpet was stained, bathroom fixtures were outdated, I won’t bore you with all the details. All in all we were disappointed. We cancelled our reservation for the return portion of our trip and stayed at a gorgeous historic hotel in Davenport, Iowa where everything was immaculate and COViD procedures were followed. If you choose to book this hotel, be very careful to not get tricked into booking on from the hotel website. I had asked the young woman at the hotel if she could make the reservation for me, but she told me it would be better for me to book online. maybe she was busy??? Anyway, I accidentally booked on a trap & was charged an additional $20 for the privilege. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

What a great find!!!!

We were having challenges during COVID to find a place to stay. The Inn was so accommodating! The staff went out of their way to be sure everyone was safe, masked, social distanced, and we were able to reserve time at the pool and hot tub next door, which were immaculate. We felt safe, took long walks over to the college grounds. We traveled with our small dog, and they were so welcoming of him, and provided everything we needed for him to have a wonderful stay as well as ourselves! We highly recommend, AND THERE ARE VERY FEW PLACES I WOULD SAY THAT ABOUT IN SOUTH BEND. Lots of restaurants nearby! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Buyer Beware!

Buyer be ware! Can be really expensive. I had called a couple of days ahead of our event and had a pre-paid reservation and actually failed to get a quote on the room rate. We were having an event at the Gillespie Center next door where the Hilton Garden Inn is located and I had caught their airport shuttle with Jimmie for my ride in, so I wasn't anticipating staying anywhere else, and the Hilton Garden Inn was sold out. So, when I arrived, somehow they had cancelled that original reservation but found me a room and had me sign in... but I failed to review closely what I was signing and found out 2-days later that I'd agreed to a rate of $240/night... MY BAD!! Don't be so trusting!! It took me 20+ minutes to register, so I had plenty of time to read things over as I waited on them to make multiple inquiries of the manager on duty. The hotel is nice (not as nice as a Hyatt, Marriott or the Hiltons where I normally stay) and clean. They have a Starbucks, a small bar area and a breakfast area just off the lobby. The PROS: Breakfast was simple but better eggs, bacon or sausage, potatoes, oatmeal, pancake machine and a comfortable eating area... with GLASS cups, Glass Plates and real silverware as an option to the plastic and throw-away paper plates. Also, they had a nice little MR Coffee maker in the room...better than most placed and heavy ceramic mugs vs the usual paper cups. The CONS: While they have a Starbucks in the lobby, and a sign that boasts that they serve Starbucks the coffee served at breakfast and in the rooms was terrible. And I can drink some really bad coffee!! The rooms are a little dated and the fire detector that beeped all night and into the morning jus outside my room door was REALLY annoying. Always check what you sign, before you sign it. I found out as I'm checking out that they had cancelled our primary speaker's room before he got in at 12:30 AM even though he had called them and confirmed his reservation and late arrival... They probably gave me his room but at $506.38 for 2-nights they were anxious to get me into it, I am sure. Just be sure you check out the alternatives and make your reservations early... and check your rate. Also, the group rate for our meeting event was quoted at $105 but I failed to make an early reservation to get one of those rooms, so had I been a better shopper, I'd not had the surprise I had at St. Mary's Inn.
