Originally opened in 1926 as one of four hotels built during the expansion of Grand Central Terminal, the InterContinental New York Barclay reopened its doors in April 2016 after undergoing an extensive two-year restoration. Now, this historical InterContinental property (which once welcomed notable guests like Perle Mesta and Ernest Hemingway) combines traditional Federalist decor and local 1920s-inspired artwork with modern touches like bold accent colors and a fully equipped fitness center. All of the hotel's 733 guest rooms and suites come with custom Anichini bedding, flat-screen TVs and subway tiled-bathrooms, while the upgraded Presidential Suite offers additional perks like a private fitness center, a baby grand piano and a library office. Most former guests appreciated their rooms' decor and amount of space, though some bemoaned poor water pressure in the showers. No matter which accommodation you choose, you'll enjoy access to The Gin Parlour (where 80-plus premium gins are served alongside international dishes made with sustainable, organic ingredients), a business center and 20,000 square feet of meeting and event space. Plus, travelers who pay an additional daily fee (which ranges from $80 to $120) can access the Club InterContinental, a lobby lounge that offers free Wi-Fi access, personalized reception services and complimentary breakfast, among other amenities. Keep in mind that IHG Rewards Club members can also earn or redeem points when staying here.

With such beautiful design elements, this doesn't feel like a typical business-friendly hotel, yet suits steadily file in and out

The lobby decor may be inspired by the American Colonial and early Federal pieces that once furnished George Washington's Mount Vernon home, but what's most glaring is how fundamentally uninteresting this hotel is.

The hotel boasts 685 guest rooms and 86 suites all of which will be touched in the 2014-2016 renovation. The number of standard guest rooms will increase to 702, but the number of suites may decrease as they combine spaces. Expect this historic hotel to feature more modern amenities – it already features like 40” LED HDTVs, windows that open (in some rooms, a rarity in NYC), and valet service – open reopening.

Location & Parking

The Barclay's Midtown East location close to several Fortune 500 companies makes this a popular mid-range choice for business travelers. But, it's close enough to major attractions – a five block walk to Times Square, for example – to attract an equal amount of leisure travelers.
  • The shopping of Lexington and Fifth Avenues are just around the corner – it’s two and a half blocks to the iconic Saks Fifth Avenue location; Central Park is just under a mile to the north.
  • About a half mile walk to Grand Central Station and multiple subway lines in a seven block radius
  • 24-hour valet parking ($71)
  • 24-hour self-parking
  • Airport shuttle
  • Car service

Within walking distance of:

The Barclay Bar and Grill will remain the same following the renovation and offers “Continental cuisine with French flair.” The restaurant is a certified Green restaurant and sources seasonal and organic ingredients – expect offerings like Amish chicken, Cajun blacked sea scallops, burgers and steaks. The Barclay Bar can mix over 100 martinis, has over 90 types of apple brandy (for your stay in the Big Apple) and features a selection of 20 wines by the glass.
  • Restaurant open for all meals including a buffet breakfast (post-renovation only), and weekend brunch
  • The bar is also green and offers a selection of organic spirits
  • There will be no room service prior to the renovation, but the hotel will resume its 24-hour in-room dining standard upon reopening

Prior to renovation, the hotel is operating with minimal services and so has scaled back its family friendly offerings. For families requiring additional amenities, they’ll find little here now – the most family friendly amenities being the slashed prices and prime location… even the buffet breakfast has stopped.
  • A number of adjoining room options available
  • Upon reopening the hotel will resume usual family services like rollaway beds, cribs, microwaves and minifridges upon request
  • A close walk to Times Square and around the corner from the American Girl Place
  • Kids club
  • Cribs
  • High chairs

The fitness center is one of the few things that may not change in the renovation. Though it’s not the most exciting of spaces (no windows, all machines face a large mirrored wall), the already well-equipped and newly transformed space can fit around 15 people and features a sauna as well as steam room.
  • Five treadmills, a stair stepper machine, stationary bikes and elliptical as well as free weights
  • The concierge can arrange for bike (or scooter) rentals for outdoor exploration; there is also a city bike dock near the hotel

The hotel has long been a popular corporate and social meeting space with its combined total of 13,900 square feet of event space. The 2014-2016 renovation will see those spaces get a revamp as well including the addition of a new “huge” ballroom. Executive office staff recommend interested parties follow the hotel’s brand on Twitter, @InterConHotels, for renovation updates throughout 2015.
  • Pre-renovation services included leather backed executive chairs, state-of-the-art A/V equipment, event catering as well as visual and lighting systems
  • A 24-hour business center is located off the lobby (not an enclosed space), with a single computer and two printers

The Barclay allows one pet per room; dogs only, 70 lbs. or less. All guests must register their dog with the front desk upon check-in. The hotel notes they should be nonaggressive, leashed in public areas, and never left alone in the room.
  • $25 per night pet fee
  • The concierge can arrange dog walking, sitting or other services, though does not offer any pet amenities – this may change following the renovation
  • Pets allowed (with fee)
  • Dog walking
  • Pet-sitting

The hotel will not be hosting weddings until after its renovation is completed in 2016, but expect its new expansive ballroom to be as popular with New York brides as it has been since 1926.
  • Pre-renovation details: Ballroom could accommodate 250 seated guests from $165 per person
  • Total wedding guest capacity ranges from 500-600 depending on space arrangement and needs

Maximum wedding guest capacity600

  • Hotel hosts weddings
  • Outdoor space for weddings
