Mediocrity at its best

Apr 14th, 2019

I found the customer service of the front desk to be non existent. Our room on the street side was noisy with sirens, car horns and loud radios all night long. We were on the 5th floor. No assistance was offered and we wound up paying heftily for an upgrade to get in the ocean side, to a room that was powerfully musty and stinky. Again, no response to multiple requests for febreeze or room freshener. The headboard of the bed was upholstered and it too, had a horrible mildew smell. Maybe the room was soaked in a hurricane?? The beach wasn’t cleaned and there was 2-6 feet of seaweed on the sand and in the surf, making swimming and walking unpleasant unless you could skirt around it. Restaurants were average. Interesting that there were signs saying Tuesday night half price sushi and sake, but our server argued it did not include sake. It did. Only positive thing was Nestor, the concierge and Milton, a happy server at the breakfast buffet. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Intercontinental Puerto Rico

Staff Friendly and Efficient. Overpriced Drinks and Food at Resort. ( $8.50 for 2 small cups of coffee. $27 a person for Breakfast Buffet that is nothing more than Average at Best) Not worth the money to eat and drink enjoyably at Resort. Very expensive to eat and drink at near by restaurants and bars. Certainly takes away from being able to enjoy your value to dollar spent. Daily Resort fees of $35 plus a day and for what!? These are not mentioned at time of booking. The rooms are nice, but nothing special. Location is ok with a nice beachfront. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful beach, disappointing hotel

Apr 7th, 2019

We planned a last minute escape and had hopes that the bad reviews were skewed. Sadly, they were spot on. The grounds and view from our ocean front room were spectacular. The pool was quite cold, but the waterfall, swim up bar and enormous space were quite nice once you adjusted to the temperature. There is a shallow landing in the pool that’s great for young children and lounging. As people have mentioned, the hot tub is odd because the jets are in the middle. The beach was nice, but often had cigarette butts scattered around under the trees. That was a huge turnoff. The space closer to water was beautiful and quiet. The beach attendants were quite good and often removed people who were not guests at the resort. However, we were approached several times by vendors, which made me uncomfortable leaving my phone at the chair to go into the ocean. The water is not clear so you can’t snorkel. That was disappointing. One day during the week, there was a seaweed issue that kept us out of the water, but every other day it was clean. The waves are just enough to keep kids happy, but not enough to keep you out of the water. It’s not Grand Cayman or St. John calm, either. The hotel itself is about to be renovated so many of the issues we faced will be addressed in the short term. The lobby is nice and the rooms are just fine. However, the carpets seemed a bit dirty and the bathrooms are rough. One night, while using the hotel hair dryer, smoke started pouring out of the outlet. Maintenance came and the wires in the wall melted. There easily could have been a fire in the room. No accommodations were made for us and we lost nearly two hours stuck in the room while they made the repair because I had not had the opportunity to finish getting ready for the evening or putting away valuable in the safe when they arrived. It was a lost night. When we complained about it to the front desk on two different occasions, they did nothing. The pool area is noisy. Between the loud music and construction going on in the building next door, it was difficult to relax. For perspective, I live with teenagers and I thought it was loud. Housekeeping is poor. While the room was clean, they only ever provided 3 towels for the four of us, even after we had to make daily calls for new towels. Towels left hanging up did not dry so trying to be environmentally conscious and reusing towels wasn’t an option. We were also never provided with shampoo/ conditioner/ soap refills unless we called down. On two occasions, the towels and toiletries never arrived. The area around the hotel is not attractive and I would not walk around in the evening alone. However, the CVS across the street was convenient for extra sunscreen and bottled water. The room has a minibar and a separate refrigerator. Go with the ocean front room for a spectacular view. The restaurants at the hotel were all pretty awful. When we are at Ruth Chris, you could feel the floor vibrating and everything on the table shook from the laundry below us. Apparently, that’s been an issue and the waiter told us that there are several tables that are bad. Not sure why they sat each of those tables while others were empty. The other restaurants were overpriced and the food was terrible. Room service food was less expensive and better quality, though not good. Skip the breakfast buffet, which was inedible, and order room service. My teen son like the burgers at the Ocean Breeze, which also has a brick oven for pizza that we never tried, but it looked good. The El San Juan is next door and it was much nicer, but the rooms do not have balconies. I loved the balcony in our room. Other luxury resorts in the area (Ritz) were still closed for renovations during our visit. As for excursions, we traveled to the Bioluminescent Bay in Fajardo. It was a don’t miss. However the concierge told us it was 45 minutes away. It was actually 1.5 hours away without traffic. We arrived back at the hotel at midnight with my child when we had been told 9:30. If the hotel gets their act together and focuses on housekeeping, service and restaurants once they renovate, this would be a solid option in Isla Verde. If you’re looking to stay in a beautiful area, I’d steer clear. Last tip- Call Uber. They’re often 75% less expensive than taxis. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Delightful Stay

Apr 7th, 2019

Stayed here with my family, we had a truly incredible experience. Nestor, the concierge, intercepted us as we were checking in and gave us so many recommendations on what to do and where to eat.. Overall he was incredible and made us feel welcome. We spent lots of time at the pool, the bartenders Michelle and Pedro were especially fun and friendly, the whole family loved spending time with them. Our rooms were great as well, we will absolutely be coming back soon. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
