Top notch hotel, great location

The Clement Monterey is one of my favorite hotel's in Monterey and the one with the best location. It is right in the heart of Cannery Row, easily walkable to a lot the major sights in town and a lot of great dining. The rooms are updated an spacious and the view rooms are great. My one knock is the pool, which is a lap pool and barely has room for two swimmers to use it at the same time. Other than that, I have nothing but good things to say about The Clement. Beautiful location, overlooking the water. There are rooms on the water side and also across the road, connected by a walk over bridge. Good idea to check before leaving home which room you have. The staff were helpful and friendly. We tried the recommended Tuna Bread Roll, which was amazing!! and also the Chowder Soup. We had a hire car, which we were able to drop off out the front of the hotel and for a USD$35 fee it was parked for us elsewhere by the parking valets overnight. Very convenient. Lots of restaurants and walking/cycle tracks - great for families. We saw lots of seals sunbaking on the beach LOL. We would stay here again. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
The Pros and Cons of Our Four Night Stay
Jul 18th, 2019
My husband and I were looking for a place to stay in Monterey that would be centrally located and with full ocean view. We decided on The Clement Monterey. It costs more than we usually spend for accommodations but we decided to splurge and did get a prepaid rate available to IHG members. We planned to see the Aquarium and enjoy some good seafood and sit and read on the balcony while enjoying the wonderful views. We are 73 and 76 and help care for our young grandchildren so we were really looking forward to a nice relaxing vacation. First, the hotel is beautiful and the location is prime--next to Aquarium and within walking distance of good restaurants. The valet service is excellent. They had a good system and although we never like to valet park, we felt comfortable with it here and it was very convenient. Parking is scarce in Monterey so that was one thing we never had to be concerned about. It was about $37.00 per night and well worth the cost. We had a 4th floor room. The bed was king size. There was a fridge but unfortunately it was filled with items to buy and there was no room to squeeze in anything else. There was an expresso maker which we did not use. The bathroom had a separate shower and soaking tub. The towels and linens were nice.We had requested that any duvet on our bed be removed before we arrived and replaced with two blankets. We did not notice that had not been done until we started to bed the first night but we removed it and found one blanket in the closet so we used that and it was sufficient. The housekeeper removed the duvet the next day. Housekeeping was great. They were all very friendly and accommodating and did a great job cleaning. The only cleaning problem that was never addressed was the balcony. The balcony has two chairs and when we arrived there was already bird excrement on the balcony floor and by the next morning, there was bird excrement on the chairs as well so we were unable to use the balcony at all. The view is outstanding-full ocean view. We loved the fresh air the sliding door provided but unfortunately there was no screen so we were unable to leave it open at night and had to depend on the AC. I understand there is no way the hotel can keep up with the bird excrement but the balcony and chairs were useless. We only ate in the restaurant two mornings and we found the service to be superb-very attentive. The breakfast menu had many offerings. I especially enjoyed the California fruit plate with yogurt and the bread basket. It would have been plenty for two people! The menu items were high priced but the quality was excellent. Coffee was $5.00 but a whole pot was brought to the table which we always like. The bell staff are great and it was nice to have help in after our long drive and especially helpful when we left with all our shopping to load up. My only serious complaint was the quality of our mattress. We have stayed in hotels all over the world and have never had a worse time sleeping. They use a very firm mattress with some sort of topper on top. We have a similar situation at our own home and it works great but their concept failed us. The problem was the topper completely flattened out when we lay down on it. All of the stuffing or whatever was in it was in the middle of the bed between us. The pillows had the same problem. They completely collapsed under our heads and were flat under our heads. We've never experienced anything like it before. The hotel answer was to remove the topper. All that did was put us on the very hard mattress. If we had not paid in advance, we would have checked out a day early as we were so sleep deprived. Two different hotel staff told me that, "We've never had a complaint about our beds." That did not help us and I felt disrespected. This was the first and last time I will ever pay in advance for a hotel room, because we would have checked out after the first night because of the bed in spite or all the other pluses for the property. I thought the hotel should comp our last night but instead they only offered 20,000 IHG points which they said was enough to stay at a Holiday Inn for one night. Interestingly, 2 years ago, I brought my daughter and two grandkids to Monterey and we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and I have to say, their beds were truly comfy! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Stayed for just one night so limited in what I can review. Location was very good. Staff were very helpful. I always think it is a good sign when your not just directed to the hotel restaurants but given recommendations on local restaurants. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Our stay here for 3 nights was over $2000.00 with a AAA rate (thought that was for a suite but I was mistaken). The room was very average with a small balcony. It was ocean front so the view was wonderful! The fireplace was very disappointing (gas and it shut itself every short while). The “lap” pool was the size of one lap in a lap pool. And there was NO coffee in the lobby in the morning you could make it in the room but I sat in the lobby by 4:30am to not wake my husband which was why I wanted a suite). The location of the Intercontinental is terrific if you want shops and restaurants without having to drive. Overall, it’s adequate but certainly NOT worth the money for what we got.
