Almost Perfect

We were here to watch our daughter play Duke Women Basketball Team. This was our first visit. The hotel is really nice and well kept. The only negative was the staff in the Lobby Lounge. He was not as friendly to us as he was to another guest. It was a first time visit for the other guest as well. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Very good option for Durham

This is a relatively new hotel. I was given an excellent corner room that was very bright. The room was well appointed and contemporary but not quite up to a 5 star standard for construction quality. The restaurant is pleasant and the food is good but not great. Friendly staff but not 5 star service. I would rate this a solid 4 stars although I think I was given a particularly good room because I heard another guest complain that their room was too dark. Definitely choose a corner room if they have it available. I would stay here again. Definitely better than the Washinton Duke Hotel which is the competition in the area. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful hotel, great location

Love this very modern hotel. Slight glitch with housekeeping not making up our room, but we'd still return. Very convenient to Duke med. Shuttle service Breakfast buffet excellent, but no ala carte menu. Great value for upscale hotel. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Always a good home while in Durham

Love the location, the space and the rooms. The beds are particularly well appointed and comfortable. The only thing that was disappointing was the service in the dining area in the lobby. The waitress brought our food and then completely disappeared. No drink or water refills, no checking in, nothing. The food was quite tasty, but this inattentive service was not in keeping with everything else the hotel has to offer. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Disagreeable service and some unacceptable mistakes

I am writing this review on behalf of my parents, who visited the JB Duke Hotel a few weeks ago. The very first contact with the hotel's staff was a cold and disagreeable one, as the unsmiling person at the front desk couldn't find their reservation (and did not make any effort to try, instead staring at us pretty suspiciously). After we realized that there had been a mistake in the spelling of our family name when the booking was made on the phone, my parents finally got their room key as well as their breakfast coupons, only we realized after going up to the room that they received coupons for a single breakfast, despite staying at the hotel for two nights. That was another trip to the unwelcoming front desk for us, with not a single apology from the staff for that mistake. The room was comfortable enough, but the view wasn't very nice, and worst of all: there was a dirty glass on the floor right outside my parents' door (the previous occupant's room service that hadn't been taken away, maybe?), and a candy bar wrapper under one of the chairs in the room. When we mentioned that at the front desk, again, there was barely an apology on their behalf and they merely said it would be taken care of. I did not go back to the hotel myself after that, but my parents said that the staff was very cold and unwelcoming for the entirety of their stay, and that they made absolutely no effort to speak slowly - my parents are French and often have trouble understanding spoken English. They said the breakfast was very average (with no service at all) and they had trouble finding a clean table on both mornings. Once again, the room was comfortable and the hotel well-located, and one or two people, like the man who took care of parking their car, were very nice, but the fact that the majority of the staff was unwelcoming and borderline rude during their stay, and the dirty state in which we found the room, are entirely unacceptable for a hotel of that standing.
