History, comfort, excellent service, and gorgeous contemporary art in the heart of Houston

Jul 17th, 2019

Though we live in Houston, we often spend the night in the ever more exciting Downtown area. We had tickets to a play and stayed at our favorite downtown lodging, the JW Marriott on Main Street. Conveniently located in the very heart of the city, it stands next to 2 lines of the Houston rail system, which make it easily accessible to the Museum District, Reliant Stadium, Midtown, and the East End, in addition to Downtown. We received a warm greeting from Ender at the reception desk, and he allowed us to do a "spin the wheel" promotion that resulted in a $50 credit at the hotel's excellent Main Kitchen. He also gave us a nice room that he called a suite though it was simply a larger than average room (sadly, with no view). My elite status allowed us access to the lovely 11th floor executive lounge--unfortunately, on weekends, they do not do an evening hors d'oeuvres/drink service. It's disappointing that most hotels are cutting back on this service on weekends. However, the lounge did serve an excellent hot breakfast the next morning. The beds are remarkably comfortable, and with total black out curtains on the windows, we had one of the best nights of sleep in ages. Sadly, the hotel does not have a pool--it is one of the only major hotels in this sultry city without one. The spa, however, is lovely. Take some time to explore the public rooms--the art is gorgeous. Contemporary and bright, it juxtaposes well with the historic bones of the building. Our dinner at Main Kitchen was excellent--pricey, but the $50 gift certificate made it even more of a joy. At check out, Perke was very cordial and made us feel like the hotel really hopes we return. And we will (though I hope they bring back the adorable canine concierge they used to have!). TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great location, room were spacious and clean, concierge lounge breakfast was good with a variety of selections. The drinks at the lobby bar were well crafted and the calamari and charcuterie board were delicious. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Jul 14th, 2019

Beautiful, well-appointed accommodations. Impeccable staff in all areas. Highly recommended. My host, Devon, granted me a room upgrade without any prompt from me to do so. Additionally, they accommodated a late checkout on account of a flight delay. Everyone at the hotel was genuinely invested in the satisfaction of their guests. Thank you! — DC from Denver TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Nice rooms, pleasant staff

Jul 10th, 2019

Overall, I enjoyed my stay at this property. I was there for 6 nights for business. The room was spacious and the bed was comfy. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The only complaint I had was the inability to leave the basement level without use of an elevator or stairs. There were several days after our meetings on the basement level that members of my group who were disabled or handicapped were essentially trapped on that level of the hotel for 15-20 minutes until an elevator finally appeared. I would’ve given 4 stars if I hadn’t been one of those trapped in the basement (I missed the physically challenged shuttle because of this one day). TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great hotel in Houston

Jul 7th, 2019

If you’re visiting Houston, consider staying at the JW Marriott downtown. It’s a great location to take in a baseball game and the sites. We were in town doing a college visit to Rice, which is located just 15 minutes away. The hotel staff will make you feel right at home. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
