Not a good experience

Feb 16th, 2019

First, this was a last minute reservation and Mary accommodated us. Thank you. Reviews were good and we couldn't find a similarly priced hotel in Kailua. It was cold. Yes, it can get cold in Hawaii at higher elevations. They had a space heater. It did not help much. No TV. No internet. This had been a B&B, just a B now. We have stayed in B&Bs before. I did not find this quaint or rustic, just kind of run down. Sorry. I wish I had done more research. Just one example. The drinking glasses in the bathroom were sitting upside down on a ledge that needed to be cleaned. Minor, I know, but I could go on. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Lovely place, but not for me

Feb 2nd, 2019

You can see that these grounds and buildings were once lovely and a great place to spend time. Our own little cottage was spacious, which was a nice change from the small-ish spaces we stayed in around the Island, and I enjoyed that. I did not, however, enjoy the musty, moldy smell which lingered and did not dissipate. We emptied the dehumidifier three times on our one-night stay, which had to run all night. That didn't add to the enjoyment of our stay and I wanted to leave as soon as we could in the morning. We saw evidence of what looked like construction to the other cottages/rooms, which I hope includes something to mitigate the musty smell. Bottom line: I would not stay there again, no matter how historic and spacious the grounds and house are, which is too bad. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Seen better days

Jan 31st, 2019

This place was pathetic. The house, outbuildings, and garden are falling apart from deferred maintenance. The property is historic (the old Parker Ranch manager's place) — unfortunately, so is the mattress and bedding. The room smelled musty and wasn't clean. The sheets felt slimy, the mattress gave me a backache, and the room could not be made either quiet or dark at night: people walking around outside inches from your window (which seemed to be stuck open) were clearly audible, and the outdoor lights, which never went off, shone in through a hundred gaps in the curtains or shades. The owner is evidently too cheap to pay housekeeping staff, and he can't keep up; on a day when a large party arrived, we left early in the morning and returned at 3:30 pm to find we'd had no housekeeping. (We wanted to take a nap, because we'd slept so poorly, but then at 4 pm he finally got around to our room, and rousted us just as we were finally able to relax.) For this level of service, the price is a joke. Stay somewhere else. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Wonderful room

Aug 28th, 2018

I loved the view and the spa style bathtub was the best. Everything is close by and Waimea is such a friendly community. Definitely we will stay again. I live this place. Don't forget to check out the local farmers market. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Gorgeous property with some reservations

Jul 10th, 2018

Our experience at Jacaranda Inn was a mixed review. We arrived and were given our paid receipt for our night's stay. When making your reservation, they did charge the credit card at the time. We were shown our room, Passion Flower, which is in the front area, but, very private. The lanai area is shared by the Vanda room. Our room was painted a little too dark purple for my taste but, it was roomy and like someone's home. The bathroom is huge with a wonderful jacuzzi and clean shower. The bed was ok, but, they should change the pillows. Everything seemed clean and I believe the management made efforts to address some of the other online reviews regarding bugs and the mustiness. Waimea can have a lot of moisture in the air and the property has gorgeous trees and vegetation that could add to the mustiness that some rooms may have. Our friend had the Vanda room and it was light and airy. Our windows did not close which we didn't mind because it brought some air circulation. Other friends had a room in the back area with two beds. I didn't care for that room---not sure if that one was listed on their website. It just had a shower and seemed more like a barrack type room rather than the other rooms that had more charm. The reason I couldn't give this property 5 stars which if properly kept up could be exquisite is that strangely, there were areas that were taken care of like the beautifully mowed lawns. Whereas, in other areas, there were weeds and cracked walkways that gave it a haunted, unkempt look. BTW, I checked and researched and there are no ghosts or hauntings at this hotel. If I were the owners, I would fix the cracked walkways to prevent tripping and accidents. Some of the garden areas, if tended to, would be charming and add an upscale feel to the property. Great bones, just needs some tender loving care and upkeep. If you want upscale, clean, modern, sterile, this might not be the place to stay. If you want homey, charming, privacy, history, and you're not critical of every minor detail, you may be charmed by Jacaranda Inn. There are a lot of eateries from budget to upscale nearby. We had a country-style breakfast with fabulous taro pancakes at Paniolo Country Inn Restaurant. We also went to the nearby grocery stores to buy wine and food for our dinner on the lanai at Jacaranda Inn. It's convenient and we've heard that the Farmers' Markets nearby are the best on the island. My husband loved the place, my friend wanted to buy the place, her daughters in the back room weren't impressed and I thought there were great features and others that I would improve on.
