Weekend Family Get-Away
Aug 11th, 2020
Check in was quick and easy. The hotel is beautiful & very clean. Due to Covid, we had to make reservations for the pool. The lack of crowds made our pool experience very enjoyable, especially since we were traveling with an infant. Our room had a crib set up before our arrival. We were upgraded to a room with a pool/river view which was stunning. We were able to see the bats fly up the river at sunset every night. Service at the pool was fantastic! There are so many restaurants within walking distance so we didn't have to take our car out of valet during our stay. I only have glowing things to say about this hotel. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Special occasion ruined $430 for a $200 room - bait and switch

My wife and I came to Austin for a night out and stayed at the Van Zandt Hotel which we have done before and enjoy, booked it through their website showed up at the front desk to check in and we’re given a regular room when we were charged $430 and given a king single...we had booked a suite online, I spoke to the manager (Nick Morgan) and he was completely apathetic about our situation and did nothing to remedy it, I asked if he could upgrade us or reduce our rate to something that matches the going rate for the room and he refused, I asked for a refund so we could stay somewhere else that was more realistic and he refused... we will not stay here again, I will not recommend this hotel because of the poor management and lack of customer service, there are many better hotels with better rates in Austin Texas, happy hunting Nick Morgan Is a manager that does not care about customer service and was very rude during our conversation TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Surprised my Mediocrity
Aug 3rd, 2020
We have stayed at the Kimpton in Huntington Beach CA previously and believe it or not, the service was so good there that we ended up writing a written thank you note to the management team in California. This was before Covid so keep in mind that perhaps some of the insights we are writing are not set in stone. On the positive side, we had a very large room that fit a king bed rather nicely with a lakeside view. The valet service was very friendly and efficient. The shower had good water pressure and we had a very nice bathroom; the pool service staff were very nice to work with to order food and drinks from. Some things that could improve: the TV was one of those that took a while to channel surf between channels (very slow); the pool area that we had to make a reservation for was packed on the Saturday we were there (surprising as it seemed not very cautious in light of Covid); most of the front desk staff seemed surprisingly not warm but almost stand offish (not everyone but most of them); the breakfast cafe tables were dirty and not cleaned off (both inside and outside tables) but the breakfast cafe staff was very friendly. The bottom line is that the consistent service and warmth that we have received previously from Kimpton properties was not evident. In two words it seemed mediocre and robotic. We may give this property another chance in the future once Covid has passed. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful hotel! Had an incredible view of downtown and the river. Definitely worth the splurge for the Lakeview Spa Room. Lovely pool area and so glad they are taking reservations to limit the number of people. Was able to get reservations both days. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Not much is open on Rainey right now, but it is right around the corner. The food trailers are still open, so we were able to get some great desserts! Overall, a fabulous stay!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Safety practices observed in the era of pandemic
Jun 23rd, 2020
Traveling has been a bit nerve wracking given the uncertainty of the situation however Kimpton has done a nice job to ensure the safty measures are executed in a consistent manner. Besides the partition on the front desk and hand sanitizers in the lobby area, guests are now required to reserve a morning or afternoon slot to use the pool area. I was delighted to be contacted before my arrival and made the arrangement in that regard. When I reached to the pool area, staff was at the gate to verify my reservation and designated chairs for me. All done in a very seamless fashion. There were servers to take orders from guests, and they encourage guests not to order from the bar. But at the end I saw a party of 4 ended up chilling by the bar anyway. Guests are required to wear masks in all common area, and for the most part it appears everyone is doing their part. Meanwhile, room service is done based on request. There is no morning tea or coffee (it should be a typical Kimpton culture, but I don't know if it was canceled because of the pandemic or not), there is a cafe/bodega place guests can purchase snacks and coffee. The vibe is nice and I see some people use that space to do work. Wine hour (another Kimpton standard) is still on. I also used the fitness room. The water machine was not working and I wasnt sure whether it was part of the plan but it would be nice if there was a sign to inform guests and had water bottles available somewhere. Wet wipes were available for guests to wipe down the equipment after use. There was a Pelaton but I couldnt get it working either. I do want to point out one design flaw which is the small piece of glass in the shower stall that designers somehow think it would be sufficient to block the water coming out of the shower when in fact most of the time water was leaking thru the opening or spraying all over the wall and I had to adjust the shower to a certain angle to avoid causing further water splash... It was just not at all a fully enjoyable experience. And if people think an aesthetic trend could outweigh a functional purpose they are out of their mind Overall I enjoy a great deal of the hotel. Staff are very courteous. For those who enjoy some interesting art pieces you can take a quick troll on the second level hallway where the meeting rooms are TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
