A great place, but...

I stayed twice at Knossos Beach Resort in 2020, both times for 5 nights, in August (see my other review) and in October. What I really like here: - the two coves are wonderful, with clear clean warm water, soft sand, no waves and very safe for swimming - the resort is build like a cretan village, which is really lovely - Kokkina Hani (the village the resort is in) is nothing special, but it has several restaurants and shops and overall a good infrasctruture - no long transfer time, you are at the airport in about 15 minutes I think however that it really depends where you stay (there are many different room categories). Both times I booked a waterfront room, which is really great by location and view. Sitting on a terrace just a few meters away from the sea, meaning that the beach is also just a few meters away from you, is amazing. I am quite sure I would have had a very different experience at Knossos if I had booked a room in the back. This is not a critism, just stating a fact. I guess you get what you pay for. Knossos Beach Resort could in my opinion improve on: Breakfast: the COVID buffet is fine, but its not 4 stars, and not even close to 5 stars. The fruit selection & quality of the fruits is very poor, which I cant understand, as there are so many fresh and tasty fruits groving on Crete. Why not offer local fruits ? Another thing about breakfast I cant understand - why not serve better coffee ? Greeks love coffee, and most guests including myself do as well. So why serve nescafe style coffee? Restaurant: That is of course a personal feeling, but I find the setting of the main restaurant is a "down putter". Most of the tables are inside. Who wants to sit inside when they are on a beautiful sunny island in Greece ? I definitely want to sit outside, and I cant understand the "outside/inside" rato of the tables. General service (especially at reception) is not like in a 4 or 5 star resort. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Warm & friendly staff, beautiful sandy beaches and epic snorkelling right offshore

We’ve stayed here 5 years in a row and enjoyed it even more every year. The staff are incredibly warm, welcoming & accommodating. The buffet breakfast is tasty & plentiful, but the a la carte options are GREAT (and if you book a suite all inclusive you can have lunch & dinner at Si La or Swell a la carte restaurants). The hotel includes two private sandy beaches, and the water is nice and warm (still 25 C in early October!). We usually come in June, July or August for a few weeks, but this year amidst COVID-19 I came back to stay on my own and work remotely throughout Sep & Oct. Having tried a few room types over the years our favourites are the Island Suite and the Waterfront Suite with Private Pool and Beach Access. The latter is especially the wonderful — you step out of your room to a small private infinity pool overlooking the sea, with loungers and stairs down to the beach. It’s fabulous to get out of the sea after a few hours of snorkelling and lounge in the pool to relax further. The best kept secret though is that in addition to the 2 private beaches, there is also a third bay to the east (opposite Si La) which has a rocky bottom and a vibrant undersea ecosystem. You can see dozens of different species of fish (tho wear sea shoes / flippers as these include scorpionfish, weevers, blennies and others that you do NOT want to stand on), octopus, Mediterranean moray eels and even the occasional cuttlefish. I’ve even been privileged to see turtles on multiple occasions! Pro-tips for spotting turtles: swim on the surface, calmly and ideally just sculling with your arms (not kicking). Don’t dive down or rush toward a turtle if you spot it — you’ll scare it away. Best chance to see them is on calm days with low to no swell and very little wind. They tend to be directly opposite Si La, beyond the end of the reef (50% of its length further out) where the pampas grass grows on the rocks. And remember to collect any plastic bags you see, turtles mistake them for jellyfish and sadly die by choking on them 😰 TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Pleasant stay, great beach for family and lovely architecture. The food was good and the staff was great. We had an upgrade to a suite with beach view and this was so enjoyable. The hotel is close to airport TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Not far from 5 points but...

Knossos beach complex is a nice small" village type" structure. To walk from reception to the room ou from room to room and you can easely imagine you in a cretan village. The suite on sea is large, with balcony and an outdoor shower. The bungalow on beach is large enough. But : - effectively it is on the landing corridor of the airport. Not so problematic for us as we are out of hotel from 9am to 5-5'30 pm to hike or visit but for people who are here to stay on beach it can be problematic...And we are in a year covid and so the aerian traffic is poor... - if the cleaning team was on top for the suite, our children in the bungalow had the glasses of the welcome drink all the 5 days long of the sejour on their table...and sand on floor one day over two...(please have the same serious attitude for all rooms..). - we had a family suite on sea and on the website this is" family suite with seaview and beach cabanas... Strangely, the cabana disappears of the voucher...Please actualise your offer on website...If there is an option without cabana it has to be on the website offer!!!Or I have paid for what I had not have the use... Good Breakfast, not in buffet due to covid but enough choice... TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

The rooms - If you are not buying the most expensive suite, expect cheap rooms that look like a hostel, toilet and shower that very much do not justify a 5 star hotel. Room service - very mediocre cleanliness, we always had full sand in the room. We only got one clean towel while they know a couple is staying in the room. Staff - clearly impatient, need to call 3 times for reception to get an answer. Not nice and always made us feel uncomfortable. Food- everything is dry, tasteless, rotten fruit, hard bread, unspiced things, and they charge you even for water. In short, it is better to save this money and enjoy restaurants in the city. In conclusion, there is no doubt that the hotel itself is beautiful but its value is terrible since it is not cheap at all. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
