And according to guests, the hotel has aged well: Many describe La Fonda as charming and enchanting, marveling at the pueblo-style architecture and Native American artifacts. This venerable Downtown landmark underwent its biggest renovation in nearly a century in 2013, its rooms upgraded with more modern amenities and better climate controls, but with a warm, artful design — including whimsical painted headboards and handcrafted furniture — that's faithful to the vision of Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, the vaunted architect responsible for the hotel's elegant Southwestern aesthetic.
The best hotel right on Taos plaza has roots that date back to 1820, when a hotel first appeared on this spot. The rooms, while not huge, have an undeniable historic elegance, with hand-tiled bathrooms and fireplaces in some.
