If a romantic getaway is what you're after, consider a stay at the Mahekal Beach Resort in Playa Del Carmen. Favored among couples for its intimate atmosphere, peaceful rooms and stellar staff, the Mahekal Beach Resort continually impresses twosomes – and many even plan repeat visits to the property. Those traveling sans significant other say much of the same, especially in regards to the size of the resort, which lodgers describe as not too big and not too small. But that's not to say the resort skimps on amenities: Mahekal offers five on-site restaurants and bars (not including its pool bars), four pools, a spa, a fitness center, direct beach access and the Vida Aquatica Dive Center, which provides water sport rentals, fishing trips and snorkel tours on top of scuba certification and excursions. Guests ate up the thatched-roof accommodations and the palm trees that surround them. Standard rooms feature private terraces with hammocks, complimentary Wi-Fi access, bathrooms with walk-in showers and organic, Mayan-inspired bath amenities. The only complaint among recent lodgers? Those who stayed at Mahekal Beach Resort during Playa Del Carmen's music festivals (which typically occur in December and January) said a relaxing vacation is not easy to come by thanks to all the extra noise and guests.

A boho-chic, beachfront property, the upper-middle-range Mahekal Beach Resort has 196 rooms with garden or ocean views, many of which have thatched roof bungalows. ... Kids are welcome here, but with its bars, sexy, naturalistic decor, and proximity to nightlife, the resort feels more like a place to bring a significant other (or to meet one).

Travel + Leisure

Mahekal Beach Resort, situated on the sun-dappled Riviera Maya in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, was formerly the Shangri-La Caribe, deriving its name from author James Hilton’s vision for utopia. This massive Caribbean resort, which dates to 1982, may not be heaven on earth, but it does have white sand beach, a sea of shaded palapas, and an ocean of palm trees
