Burrowed in New Hampshire's Lakes region on Shepherd Hill (just a two-hour drive from Boston), The Manor on Golden Pond earns high marks from visitors for its romantic ambiance and rustic charm. Recent guests (especially couples) commend the cozy accommodations; each guest room and suite features a distinctive style and decor, with many rooms boasting wood-burning fireplaces. All accommodations come equipped with L'Occitane bath products, Keurig coffee makers, cable TVs and Frette linens. (Some visitors do note though that the rooms are starting to show their age and could benefit from an update.) The amorous atmosphere carries over to the Seasons Spa, which offers couples-oriented packages that include sparkling wine. As far as dining goes, the hotel houses the Van Horn Dining Room, which serves mouthwatering dishes like mushroom risotto and smoke-roasted duck. After savoring delectable fare, head to the Three Cocks Pub for a twist on classic cocktails.

Fodor's Choice

Wealthy Englishman Isaac Van Horn instantly fell in love with the area and decided to build an English-style manor in 1907. The home became known for its elaborate celebrations, but when Van Horn's beloved wife died, he abandoned the property.

Beyond its Tudor architecture and carved oak corbels, many of the inn's antiques, as well as its traditional afternoon tea and dark-wood-paneled Three Cocks Pub, are straight from the other side of the (bigger) pond.
