Travel + Leisure

Named after the woman who saw the historic mansion through its original renovation in 1910, Hotel Ella is an elegant Greek revival structure (to create the building's columns, Ella hired the same stone carver that constructed the legendary Biltmore Mansion in Asheville).

Condé Nast Traveler

Hotel Ella has undergone many identity changes throughout the years: it served as a home to namesake Ella Wooten and her family in 1900s, University of Texas student housing from the 1940s to 1970s, a rehabilitation center in the 1980s, and finally, the hotel it is today.

Inside, rooms are handsome, large, and well-appointed, more Texas cattle baron (leather, wood, brass) than stuffy Victorian (no fringed chandeliers or heavy damask draperies here).

Frommer's Exceptional

Throughout the property is a sense of elegance and whimsy, with a slate-grey exterior complemented by neutral hues in the furnishing and linens, and stone sculptures with a timeless bent (fitting, as Dr. Wooten collected sculptures).

Ella Wooten was known throughout Austin for her hospitality, culinary talent and impeccable taste. Hotel Ella strives to carry on her legacy by preserving much of the architecture, while giving the interior design a modern yet elegant lift.
