Don't Do It...
Aug 21st, 2019
Despite being a heavily business traveled Titanium Marriott member, I'd never stayed at this hotel. I get in around 5pm and valet my car. I apporach the front desk and the young lady looks up, stone faced. No smile, no greeting, just a blank stare. I say I'm checking in and finally she speaks. "Last Name?" she says. I provide it and hand her my credit card and ID. She's silent and doesn't bother to do anything except feverishly tap on her keyboard. She reaches for a room keycard and I say "can you get me on a high floor"? (knowing my profile states my preference but suspecting she ignored it in a blissful state of apathy). She says, "you're on floor 7". Not what I asked as there are 31 floors on the hotel so I ask, "can you get me any higher"? She raises her eyebrows and sighs deeply to ensure I understand her annoyance. She says (not asks) "25th". "Huh"? I ask. "25th floor. Is that ok?". "Sure" I say. Another sigh from her ensures I know that she is inconvenienced by this whole "working for a living" thing and couldn't care less about my experience while staying there. She activates my keys and hands them to me. "Elevators are over there" she says while pointing a limp finger towards a hallway. I get to my room and of course she has placed me in a room with 2 queen beds instead of 1 king as I booked. A wise and strategic "F You" after I bothered her with my request for a higher floor. The room is remodeled but the sink is clogged and won't drain. I don't call maintainace because I assume they are the same as the lady at the front desk and will be pissed that I exist. The beds are also different from most full service Marriotts and the comforter is thin and light instead of the heavy, good quality duvets of the usual full service Marriott. Bottom line: Good location but don't expect any level of traditional Marriott service or room standards. So dissapointed in this property. You may think this doesn't apply to you but it doesn't until it does. Safe travels. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

We stay here occasionally when our other choices are not available. It tends to operate on the Marriott credo of "The more you pay the less you get". We were here during the State Fair, so opted for valet parking, there are a couple of other public parking ramps within walking distance, but not under the circumstances, not a sure bet for finding a spot. Valet service was prompt and no problems, they have a text message option, which has a spotty service history, but at least it gives you an error message if your car order doesn't go through. Our room was OK, average. The property has been remodeled in recent years, so the rooms are modern. The concierge lounge is closed on weekends, but has been good during other stays. Although the hotel is downtown, many desireable locations are a significant walk. We generally prefer the Renaissance, which has been going through a much needed remodel for the past couple of years. Will stay again if necessary. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Bug and dust
Aug 17th, 2019
The morning after our first stay we found a bug on the bathroom carpet mat. When we brought it to the manager of duty’s attention, we were made to feel like we did something wrong. We were temporarily moved to a queen bed while we waited for a king room. Although the manager claimed we were his “number 1 priority” when we checked on the king room hours later he had forgotten us, and didn’t have anyone triple check the room before giving us the king. Since it was a bug, no one wanted to talk to us until a third party company investigated and everyone just talked about a claim. I have NEVER been treated so poorly in a hotel. All we wanted was a enjoyable stay in Des Moines. We choose to check out early and stay at a neighboring hotel for the rest of the visit. On a side note the bathroom also smelled like a stinky wet mop and the corners of the floors were in badly need of a vacuuming (very dusty). TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Here for a 4 day conference
Jul 25th, 2019
I was in town for a conference at the Iowa Event Center. When I booked, I was under the impression that it was a lot closer than it really is. Needless to say, I got some steps in each day! The skywalk feature is a lifesaver. It was awesome to use when it rained. The hotel was great. The rooms are huge (I stayed in a king room). The front desk was very nice and answered all of my questions about the airport shuttle. I had to take it at 4:30 AM for an early fight. The shampoo, conditioner, and soaps in the rooms smell so good! I do recommend that place! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
