Charming with issues

Nov 11th, 2019

This is a charming small hotel in a great location, but it's due for refurbishment.  We stayed in suite 13 which is relatively spacious, but the space is poorly utilized. There is no usable desk, just a narrow and impractical antique table by the door. The walls and the carpet need a refresh.  It was relatively quiet, except for the old air conditioning system which was so loud we had to shut it off overnight.  We had a plumbing issue resulting in brown water in the shower but it was fixed pretty quickly.    It's important to note this is a 20-room inn, not a B&B.  Breakfast service was impersonal and unimaginative, and the staff always seemed to be in a hurry to clean up.  Wifi didn't work for much of the time we were there (4 days). Staff told us it was an issue with their service provider, but as this was a working trip for my wife and I the lack of wifi was a major inconvenience. The parking situation is not good because they try to cram too many cars into too small of a space.  Constant jockeying is needed.  If you have a large car you should avoid this garage. I do love old houses (in fact I own two) so I don't expect everything to be perfect, but there is room for improvement here. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Charming but too noisy for sleep.

Oct 13th, 2019

Pleasant surroundings, quaint 19th-century decor and reasonably satisfying breakfast options. Staff were efficient and polite if not effusive or especially gracious. Our room, though one side of the bed had no nightstand, was spacious and comfortable, with two easy chairs, bedside sconces, and a high, firm bed and mattress. Also included two suitcase racks (not just one), which I appreciate. So this would have been a four-star review but for the fact that our room, Room 1, directly off the porch and lobby, was insanely noisy so we slept badly (not a frequent problem for us). Any first-floor room here might be the same. Since sleep is kind of the point, $279/night is way too much for these rooms. And management should be up front about the situation on the website, the way a sports arena or theater labels obstructed-view seats. Fortunately for us, there were no prolonged late-night conversations in the lobby during our stay, since it was about two feet from the head of our bed. That was just luck, though, and there's no luck for anyone trying to sleep through breakfast-prep when your pillows are directly above the kitchen. Starting around 6 am, we could hear arrivals ("Good morning!" a staffer called in full voice to the delivery person, directly outside our window.) and the clanking of dishes, glasses and cutlery and could smell a heavy odor of frying butter and bacon. Honestly, it felt like we were trying to sleep *in* the kitchen. In addition, the HVAC and other machine and plumbing noises were also unusually loud. So catching up on lost sleep later in the day, as people came and went through the main door just outside our room, wouldn't have been an option. A pretty place but, especially for a splurge, disappointing. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Comfortable stay

Oct 11th, 2019

Friendly hotel, clean and serves good breakfasts especially scrambled eggs. There is a lack of storage in the bedroom, and the comfortable bed is unusually high! And difficult to get into in our room with a slanting ceiling. good value for money TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Perfect location, great staff, quiet, clean & cute!

I travel a lot for work and highly recommend this B&B. The staff are all great, easy to reach, accommodating. Room very cute and clean. Comfortable bed. Lovely breakfast each morning. Nice coffee shop and Walgreens 1 min away on the Main Street. Pleasant 20 min walk to Harvard Square. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Lousy for business travelers

Sep 13th, 2019

I was placed here by the institution I was visiting and if I’d had a choice I’d have booked a hotel. This doesn’t have the amenities of even a basic hotel—they don’t even have climate control that really works. Simple basics like a full length mirror or more than 2 hangers in the closet are missing. If you’re really into old b&bs you might like it but if you’re just looking for a place to stay there are much better places in the area which are also closer to transit, restaurants, and campus. Also the service is hit or miss depending who is staffing the desk. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
