charged a $100 late checkout fee for leaving something in the room. WTF???

Mar 14th, 2020

Literally i've NEVER left a bad review anywhere before but had the most insane experience at this hotel. If you can stay ANYWHERE else in Williamsburg i highly recommend doing it. I checked out in a major rush today due to carona virus stuff. I had a conversation with the front desk about leaving, called my lyft, thanked them for the stay and then things get REALLY weird. That was at noon (checkout time). Now i am being charged a late checkout fee because there was clothes left in the room. It didn't fit in the suitcase snd due to being so rushed, I didn't have time to get another one. Since when is someone charged a $100 late checkout fee for leaving something in the room? Literally they could have just gotten rid of it for all i cared. I stayed for 5 nights, spent over $250 a night, was a good guest...why nickle and dime me? Overall just super rude and weird. I guess they are hurting for money. Although now they've lost a repeat customer over a petty $100. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Great Location, Wonderful Staff!

I ended up at the Mccarren at a very last minute stressful situation. Thankful for all the kindness I received. Martin, you were the best. Thanks for helping with my luggage in the pouring down rain👍 TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Potential to be so much better!

Feb 16th, 2020

The McCarren has so much potential. Great location, friendly, helpful staff, comfortable beds, decent size rooms for Brooklyn.....But. The bathrooms are quite small. No problem. However, there is no place and I mean no place to put a toiletry bag or unpack anything except onto the floor. Not appealing. The entire wall next to the sink is empty. It would be so easy and inexpensive to put up shelving to solve this problem. Additionally, there is no place to hang wet towels. Again, on the floor they go. Hooks on the back of the door would help?? Then they would not need to be laundered daily. We were there in cold, wet January and there is not a single place to hang a wet/heavy coat. The same issue as the bathroom. There is plenty of room on one of the walls in the bedroom for hooks and there is even space for a coat rack. There is one chair next to a small table with plenty of room on the other side of the table for a second chair. Additionally, it appears that new flooring was recently put into the room but now the closet door does not close all of the way or open easily. Again, just shave the bottom? No headboard as mentioned before. This doesn't really bother me but the whole room had the appearance as if it was never finished off...almost...but just didn't get there. We were there for 5 nights so these little niggles became extremely frustrating. If only there for a night or two probably could manage. Our daughter and son-in-law live in Brooklyn so visit often. Next time we will find someplace else to stay. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Past its prime

Jan 28th, 2020

Let me first say, the front desk staff are exceptionally friendly and do everything they can to accommodate you as a guest. Thank you to them. However... their warmth and hospitality simply could not get me past how ghetto the space is. The pictures online are of this hotel's prime, which is long past. Where to begin... There is no headboard on the bed - just the mattress. There are scuffs and dings throughout the room. The rooms are stuffy and claustrophobic. The lighting is fluorescent and harsh. Lastly, I know this seems petty but none of the hangers in the closet matched!!! Like come on! The whole stay felt like a budget European hostel - not a semi-upscale experience as they market themselves. As one reviewer said, you get what you pay for. But for a little extra, you can certainly find nicer in the neighborhood. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

You get what you pay for...

This place is bargain priced and it would get one star if not for that. The exterior signage has been removed which is kind of strange from the start. Our room was fine for Brooklyn standards compared to other rooms we’ve stayed in the neighborhood. It was basically all bed. The toilet didn’t flush properly from before we checked in suggesting to me that the maid who cleaned the room prior to our arrival didn’t do much of a cleaning job of the bathroom or the toilet if it wasn’t even flushed in his or her process. We told the front desk of the problem as we left for the evening at about 4:45. We were told someone would fix it immediately. When we returned at 10:30, the problem persisted and I don’t believe anyone even tried to fix it. We informed the front desk again before 8:00am. We returned at about 4:00pm and the toilet was finally fixed, but the room had not yet been cleaned, and whoever fixed the toilet didn’t mind making a mess in the process. I’m not sure what’s going on with this place but it was one of the most “un-hotel” hotel experiences I’ve had after staying over a thousand nights in all sorts of 1 to 5 star hotels.
