Beautiful resort grounds, new rooms and attentive service; the beach could be better

My wife, two teenage sons, and I spent a couple of nights at the resort during Thanksgiving 2019. In addition to being very close to El Yunque, the grounds of the property are beautiful and were constantly being worked on and improved during our time at the resort, presumably in anticipation of the resort becoming a Hyatt property. Our hotel room was new, modern, large, and very comfortable and the pool area was very nicely laid out and spacious. Our boys particularly enjoyed some of the games at the resort, particularly pickle ball and table tennis and, although we didn't go golfing, the golf course that surrounded the drive to the hotel looked amazing. The only thing we didn't like about the resort was the beach, which was quite small and was a bit rockier than it should've been. All in all, though, we really enjoyed our stay at the resort and would certainly recommend it to those looking for an enjoyable getaway. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful property and rooms, restaurants need better service and more selection of food items.

Very slow service at the Asian Nori grill restaurant. We saw a family walk out because of the wait. The restaurant that served dinner/breakfast was also very slow. We ordered dessert one night and had to wait a while to pick up the molten lava cake and then they had a small half scoop of ice cream with it. Disappointed in the restaurants service and selection of food. Lobby bar was fun and good bartenders but should have more options for appetizers and food. Property is beautiful and expansive and loved the modern style of the rooms. Need better concierge since they were not very helpful. They should provide more guidance to people going to El Yunque with trails and parking and also the ferry vs. private boats to the neighboring islands. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Wonderful....just not yet.

We stayed here from Nov 29 to Dec 4th. It was a trip we did not book, but took from a family member who could not travel. We would typically never travel to a resort under construction and we should not have gone. The bad - note, most of these issues will be gone once construction is done. - mosquitos attacked us anytime we were outdoors. - no market to buy anything....toiletries, snacks, water, bug spray etc. Nothing. We couldn't spend any money. - makeshift main restaurant in the wedding pavillion, loaded with black birds/droppings - steakhouse ceiling leaked and was closed - bar area under construction so mobile bar was setup - spa was closed? or was moved into a hotel area under construction - had to wear an orange wrist band...why? felt like this was a spring break trip. - music was blasting from the towel hut and the adjacent swim up bar. Why was this bad? Because they were playing different songs! Talk about a headache... - the pool deck was un-walkable...I think they may have power washed the stones thereby removing a lot of material leaving sharp tiny rocks to walk on. Adult pool was painful to walk anywhere without shoes. - the place was empty. We maybe saw 30 other guests...yet we had a room that faced the back walkway when I'm sure ocean front rooms were available. If you can upgrade someone, that kind of makes them want to come back again.... I would think Hyatt would remedy these they are currently working on the resort. The good - - rooms are amazing. shower/tub area is basically a glass box (with curtain on one side) but made the room feel so open. - the lobby area is huge, open, surrounded by water, etc. Should be the main party area each night. Music, multiple bars, entertainment etc. - The 787 steakhouse meal and furnishings were fantastic. - The breakfast buffet was very good Saturday and Sunday, but then on Monday, it was gone. - At the steakhouse we met Daniel, our waiter. He was fantastic, recommended items and taught us some things about Puerto Rico. We met up with him the next night at Nori, the Asian restaurant. He made our did all the staff we met. They were very nice and accommodating given the construction circumstances. To move up to a 4 or 5 star rating please: - never use wristbands. - get the music situation at the pool set to 1 song only! - Get the market done and offer snacks? pizza? ice cream? and essentials. - Upgrade rooms for your customers if you have the space. - Eliminate the mosquitos - Obviously finish the refurb... - Put Daniel in charge! Beautiful room & resort but infested with mosquitos. Great food. Poor Service. Not a 5 star Hotel

Check-In. We arrived at 2am and it took them 30 minutes to check us. There were 3 security staff and 1 front desk attendant. The front desk attendant spent 30 minutes not only checking the party of four in front of us in but acting as a concierge and describing all of the activities near the resort and in the city of San Juan. Great perhaps during the day but at 2am - it is certainly not the best way to ensure all guests are happy. Room, Resort and Activities. The room and resort is beautiful. Everything is modern and newly renovated. Mosquitos are a major problem on the resort and when doing any activity. We booked a 18 holes at their PGA golf course. STAY AWAY from here if you can. The entire golf course was completely infested with mosquitos. We played 7 holes before it became unbearable (even with 40% deet on) to continue playing without risk of being infected with Dengue or Zika. We had over 20 mosquito bites that chewed threw t-shirts, pants, and socks. It also rained. We asked for a refund to which they replied to speak to their manager the next day. We called the next day - they told us they couldn't give us a refund but to come into the golf pro shop to use $125 for store merchandise. We went and at 1pm (an hour later) the pro shop was closed. Since we were flying the next day - we weren't happy and felt robbed. Food and Restaurant. Restaurant selection was poor. They closed Nori on Sundays (without notice) leaving only 1 restaurant open. The food was great if you don't mind waiting. We waited 1 hr before our 1st course and the entire dinner took 4 hours b/c it took the kitchen 1 hr between each course (there were only two of us). The outdoor breakfast was abysmal. There was no selection. Luckily we had club access, which served a proper continental breakfast but that was not without problems. Club access. The lounge was great except the staff did not monitor to ensure that people in the lounge actually had 'club access'. As such people ransacked the breakfast table, all the beverages, and the space. Club access patrons are identified by those wearing gold bracelets instead of the orange ones. The staff did not discern. The biggest issue was the mosquitos - for health reasons .- I'd stay away. Great stay

They are not quite fully open but service was still fantastic and the remodeled rooms are beautiful. Highly recommend the on-property restaurants. Wife and daughter did 50 minute massages that they really enjoyed TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
