An excellent stay

Oct 17th, 2019

We stayed at the Minoa Palace, Platanias, 14 to 21 June 2019 travelling as husband and wife. We had a lovely ground floor room overlooking the pool but had the privacy of a hedge. We were in the main block of the hotel where reception is. The room was large, clean and well maintained. Toiletries were provided, Towels and linen were of decent quality. There was a fridge, free safe and wifi. We were half board and found the food to be of excellent quality and variety. We swapped an evening meal for lunch which was lovely when we dined in the restaurant by the beach. There was a mid week BBQ. There was a massive choice of fresh food to suit all tastes. The staff were friendly and helpful. The gardens were beautifully maintained, complete with lizards, butterflies and birds. Rooms at the back of the hotel appeared to be peaceful in lovely surroundings with views of the gardens / allotments. Rooms and pools were also available across the road or over a walkway. This area led to the beach where there were plenty of sunbeds and brollies. Whilst it was hot, there was a breeze on both the beach and at the pool. The beach was pebbly so we purchased some beach shoes from the nearby shop. We had some lovely lunches in the area. We visited Chania twice, which is about 20 minutes on the bus. We went to see the war tunnels, where the views are spectacular. It was a five star experience, other than the poor bar service when we twice attempted to have a drink before returning to our room at bedtime. Only the cocktails on the menu could be made - in the world of the internet, why the bar man could not search for a Brandy Alexander and make a happy customer is beyond me. On the other occasion the service was poor. Perhaps more mature bar staff would resolve these issues. We evidenced occasional entertainment in the evenings but tended to go for a walk after our evening mail and have a couple of drinks in bars. The hotel was well positioned - a few minutes walk to restaurants and bars, which I imagine get busy in peak time. There are supermarkets opposite and just down the road. There are some nice shops, as well as tat souvenir shops. Whilst some tour operators are adults only, there are children in the hotel and the hotel filled up daily with more children. I am not sure this would be for us in July and August as the resort is very family orientated but June was nice. There is a children's pool but some strayed into the big pool! The pool areas were clean with comfortable loungers. There was no problem getting a lounger during our stay. Would we return? Most definitely. See you next June. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Very high standards, good value for money

Oct 17th, 2019

Stayed for a weekend (2nd) in October. Was looking for a calm high quality resort. The Minoa fullfilled almost all my expectations but not the area of Platanias. From the entrance of the hotel until the check out I experienced very professional and high standard services. The hotel is a 5 star resort at reasonable prices (actually very good value). The room is very nice, spacious, comfy bed, big bathrooom. The breakfast was very very good, I particularly liked the local food from Crete (cheeses, olives, tomato puree, honey etc). Personell friendly and very professional. The hotel is quiet big with many guests.(it was strikiing that it was full in such a late period), however you don't have any discomfort. We had dinner at Galazio. Food was good (risotto with crabs, ravioli and kalamari salad) with a large wine list with many local wines at very good prices. The maitre/somelier was very knowlegeable and helpful. Though the pools are weel organised and relaxing we prefered the beach. It's a typical Cretan beach, kilometers long with turbulent waters. The beach facilities and service very good. The other day went for swimming in Falasarna, which I recommend. Things I didn't like: Location, the hotel is in the very touristic area of Platanias and near the main street and the highway which means that there is some noise (with open windows), The area is crowded with restaurants, tourist shops etc without nice character and architecture. The hotel's decoration- atmosphere though it is relaxing it has no character. We overall enjoyed our stay, the very good service at very reasonable prices. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Ohhhhhh....... how wrong l was

Oct 11th, 2019

I never liked the Cretan north coast village of Platanias or the surroundings. This time, as we had booked our stay on the south coast, the weather in the south was rainy and in the north a lot better. So we decided to pamper ourselves with the best hotel we could find in this turist trap we percieve Platanias to be instead of wasting the air tickets and choose another country for our fall break. Woooow-what a positive surprise! The hotel is a real resort, situated in the outskirts of the busy part of the village. It stretches over an area covering both sides of the old coast road with a pedestrian bridge connecting the two parts of the property. Most of the hotel rooms seem to be in the old part on the mountain part of the property and some new rooms, some with private pools on the sea part. The old buildings and gardens are so beautiful! The colors, the layout of the buildings, the dining room on the ground floor-a genius architect did this! They have the most wonderful art objects displayed at several spots in the common areas. The reception lounge is cosy. The beach bar has wonderful food. The breakfast a great spread. The beds are perfect. Only a couple of negatives - when we arrived at the beach there were no available sunchairs and the best ones were marked as occupied by a occupation towel laying folded on it. The other negative was that the room price was 30€ higher than announced by the net site-probably taxes. Wifi is weak. It should also be noted that the rooms are spacey and we had rooms facing the mountains-wonderful. Also, we had a big car and they have ample parking, safe and free of charge. Lastly-the people in the reception are heroes! My colleague had forgotten her tablet on the plane and was really desperate to get it back. One of the ladies in the reception assured her that it would be found and brought back to her, so help me God. And she did! My colleague was weak with relief as a lot of her important work was stored on her tablet and she was soooo so greateful. If you go to the north Cretan coast and want paradise-voilá- Minoa Palace Resort! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
