Visiting Hilton Head? Montage Palmetto Bluff should be your first stop.

Nov 30th, 2020

It's Thanksgiving week and COVID is on the rise. I wanted a safe, clean place to stay on my way to Kiawah and I chose the Montage because the ratings were very good and I wanted to check out the neighborhood to see if it would be a good place for a vacation home. I arrived at noon during a dark rainy part of the day and checked in early with no problems at all. Ok, with 1 problem. I got a new Volvo and couldn't figure out how to release the parking brake. Fortunately, the team at the valet desk had a lot of experience and took my girl directly to the charger. {And by charger, I mean extension cord 😊} Whew, catastrophe averted. Seriously, in my mind I could see myself sweating and shaking while hundreds of guests pulled up and around me to check in while I tried to figure out how to release the brake. My experience has been that if the valet team is awesome my vacation will be too. Because I don’t like to be rushed and many times in the past, I have pulled up to the valet station with overzealous employees that are opening doors and pulling out my luggage before I have the car in park. When I pulled in to the Montage driveway, I appreciated the southern hospitality I received and attribute that in part to how wonderful my stay was. The Montage at Palmetto Bluff is beautiful. Even the rain couldn't dull the shine of this southern masterpiece. It feels like a plantation home. The only clue that it is, in fact, a hotel are the desks positioned on either side of the front doors. From the front porch you can see through the entry, parlor and the porch to a fire pit with Adirondack chairs and further off in the distance is an enormous swimming pool. As the floral teams begin to light the holiday trees the rooms fill with warmth from the freshly lit fire the hotel shimmers with an amber glow that is simply stunning. I was shown directly to my feather free room where my luggage was waiting and unpacked my tennis shoes to take a look around. It was still drizzling but the sun was on the way and things would be dried shortly. The Montage offers free bikes to guests and trail maps to see interesting nature type things. I didn’t do that. I went to Wilson Village and shopped, ate ice cream, checked out the marina, spoke to the team in charge of kayaks and canoes, stopped in at the post office and sat down with a realtor. By 5 pm I was starving. Unfortunately, one of the pitfalls of staying in a resort with homes is all of the other people that live there are hungry too. So be ready to make a reservation when the concierge calls you before your stay. I didn’t take this advice and had dinner on a bar stool at Cole’s. Cole’s was delish and because there were 2 bartenders it was easy to call one over when the tequila turned my breath to fire and I needed water to put out the flames. Plus, I met a very nice couple that was happy to share the ins and outs of living at the resort and how much they loved it. It was a win/win in my book. Around 10 the complementary shuttle bus arrived to take me back to the hotel for the best rest I’ve had since March. I don’t know if they are piping something into the rooms or have magic beans under the mattress but I slept 10 hours straight. The next morning, I had a quandary, take a bath in the deep soaking tub or a quick shower? Like most women I have this image in my mind of a long warm soak, maybe reading a book with candles and orchestral music in the background and the scent of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. The reality is never as good as the dream. The shower wins every time. It was then that I noticed the bug spray on the counter. How I wish I had noticed it yesterday! For those of you that aren’t from the south there are 3 things you can always count on. The weather will usually be hot, it will often be humid and there will always be bugs. Lots of bugs. I showered, had breakfast and by 11am it was pouring rain. I had late check out but decided to pack it in and get back on the road. I slept great and had a safe comfortable stay. The employees were very good about wearing their masks and all of the guests and residents I met were complying. The hotel is so clean I can’t think of one thing that I wish was…..wait I had a squeaky ceiling fan….but that didn’t stop me from sleeping like a hibernating bear so if your in the area Montage is where you should stay. Best place to stay for the entire family!

We went to this hotel on a whim, but it turned out becoming a place we want to frequently visit and possibly buy. There’s everything to do on site from boat tours, to s’mores, to bike rides, to shooting plates, the possibilities are endless. The staff was possibly the best staff I have ever encountered. We had regne for breakfast every morning and seeing her cheerful disposition was so inviting along with her ability to remember our orders! At the spa Kristin in front desk was beyond accommodating! All in all I must say this is a slice of heaven on earth, the one part of the world that still preserves the innocence while still keeping it fun! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Just Fantastic

Recently had the opportunity to spend the weekend at the Montage in Bluffton, SC. It was spectacular! Though I didn’t get the chance to travel the full 20,000 acre resort, what my wife and I took in will always be in our memories. The room was wonderful with a great view. The staff was so professional, from the greeters in the front to housekeeping. They all seemed to really enjoy their position. One person in particular stands out and that would be JOSH. He picked us up on Friday night on our way back from dinner and told us all about the resort. What I liked was how he described everything as “my resort”, “my property”....he really took ownership. It was so refreshing because it's so rare nowadays for employees to really own where they work. It seemed that all the employees had the same attitude. I give a lot of credit to, not only the staff but management as well. When an organization hires a General Manager like Mr. Lavin who then hires a team that in turn hires staff, the staff reflects the attitude that flows out of the GM office. KUDOS !!! We travel allot. We like 4 seasons,Ritz and the like. We just got back from 4 days at Montage. Day one we did skeet shooting. The other 3 have all done it B4. . I was beginner, the gentlemen came out and helped me understand the concept. I did as good as my buddy. Next day 5 hour boat trip with Mickey. I should call it history lesson, great day Mickey is great! We wanted to get into the “Canoe” restaurant for dinner, even though we called a week early, we where placed on waiting list. The people there where absolutely great. Josh picked us up Friday afternoon from boat to take us home. We told him about the waiting list.He got on phone and got us 4 seats at the bar. What he told us about Paul the bartender was an understatement. Paul know how to pour and tell jokes. He can even juggle with gloves on. Saturday was shopping and lunch in historic Buford. Awesome. Lunch at the cottage. Great food and people. We went to 8 am mass at “Church of the Cross” built in 1860’s and survived many attacks(thanks Micky for that tidbit)Bike ride to 5 story tree house, pack and go to Hilton Head airport to be picked up in king Air . Hurricane coming our way, pilot John put it down with 50 knot head winds. Time for glass of wine. Thanks to entire staff!! Oh dinners last night was great at Cole’s. Great BBQ. Great pool room and bowling alley. Again great staff everywhere. Last secrete - they give you a Cadillac Escalade for free if you reserve it. Shhh. I last last thing great massage! World Class! Southern Charm and luxury!

Stayed in one of their suites for two nights with my wife and two kids. From check-in to check-out the experience left nothing to be desired. This place is achingly beautiful, and offers accomodations, dining, and activities that satisfy any cravings. The staff is gracious and anticipatory of your needs. It's pricey, but worth it. On a par with Four Seasons. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
