at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa
An Amazing hotel with great views and service and so safe.

We were so happy to stay at the Plaza when travelling out of town isn't very safe. It was awesome. One party at a time to use the elevator. Sign upon entering the driveway. Maks reequired or $100 fine. Schooners had tables spread far apart outside....Tidal cafe great as usual. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Outdated bedrooms & valet scratched car

The beautiful waterfront setting of this hotel, and the proximity to all of the fun in Monterey, make this hotel appear ideal. Sadly that is where the positives end for us. Our room was overlooking the street and very noisy, plus in dire need of a renovation. The dated decor was not at all what we expected given the lofty price of the room. We also had an incident with the hotel's valet service when our car returned to us with a scratch along one side. I will definitely be staying elsewhere on our next trip to Monterey. Visited Monterey Plaza at the end of June/beginning of July. Right when walking in, you see the waves crashing through the lobby windows. The ocean is SO close, you will hear and smell it all day and night. We had a great check in with Matthew (if I remember the name correctly), and I was able to upgrade to a partial ocean view room with tiny balcony. The view from the room was absolutely stunning, and the sound of the waves during the night was so relaxing. The room itself, bed, and bathroom were pretty standard. Due to COVID-19, there was no daily cleaning service, no room service, and the spa was closed. This is just a sad situation for travelers, but at least we can still travel a tiny bit. The gym was super nice, spacious, and had stunning views. Pool area is tiny with two jacuzzis. Two reasons for not giving five stars: The on-site restaurant has a nice outdoor patio, but food and service was very average for me. Also, they were closing super early - while it said on their website they’d be open until 10 pm, we were told at 8 pm that the restaurant is closing and that it’s not even okay to order just a drink at this time. So strange. So the next day we made reservations for dinner at that restaurant and came earlier, but things were strange again. We waited quite a while to be seated, and then finally got a corner table inside. The view from our room was actually better than from that table, and the restaurant just did not seem inviting. When I discovered 10-15 (seriously, not kidding!) dead flies on the window sill right where I was sitting, that was too much. We apologized to the waitress and left before ordering. And the day we left I noticed I left my wireless headset in the room. I emailed the “lost and found” department of the hotel right away, but never even got a response. 😕 The hotel is definitely worth it just for its beautiful views. I would absolutely go there again. We lucked out as we were able to get a room here at the last minute on our way home from a long road trip. Our room was ready at 2:00 allowing us to check into our room early, and check out was 12 giving us a long leisurely morning. We loved the location, right in between the shops at Cannery Row and the Aquarium and on the other side the harbor and pier. Rooms with a balcony & water view are pricey, but we found it to be worth it ending the trip in such a nice way. My husband used the 5th floor jacuzzi and said it was really nice, especially the view. Service from everyone we came in contact with was very good, exceptionally polite and eager to please. Rooms are very comfortable & clean. Schooners restaurant has good food and a lovely outdoor seating area. We were here in July with the state still dealing with Covid-19, the rooms had "sanitized" stickers across the doors when ready, and they maintained social distancing in the restaurant and elevators only allowing 1 party in at a time. I do admit, that I had traveled with my clorox wipes & lysol so I did do a little extra wiping down of highly touched areas (light switches, tv controlers etc) just as a precaution. We hadn't been to Monterey in about 15+ years so we were excited to be right there in the heart of it. Will def return and would love to stay at this hotel again. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

We came back to the hotel based on a previous pleasant stay but for the price, I'd not stay here again. Our "ocean view" was obstructed by a wall of rooms, so half the "view" was looking into other guest rooms and their balconies. The balcony was so tiny that only two chairs fit so pass on that. Rooms have either shower or bath, not both. For the price and amenities, I'd go down the street... TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
