Casual elegance and stunning views of the White Mountains define this grand hotel dating from 1865. The resort sprawls over 1,700 acres, part of which is a working farm. You'll feel pampered in the guest rooms, which have beds with thick comforters and evening turndowns. Relax in the evening at the movie theater stocked with more than 500 DVDs.

Travel + Leisure

The Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa has rescued the cult of the grand hotel. The butter yellow Colonial Revival, constructed in 1865, sits on 400 acres of wilderness at the edge of the Whites. Pull up a rocker on the front porch and look: a swath of pine stretching as far as the blue peaks of the Presidential Range and, above, a sky as big as Montana's.

Because this eco-friendly resort overlooking two mountain ranges boasts a slew of scenic hiking trails and a location that's perfect for families who love the Great Outdoors. In addition to horseback riding, carriage rides, and golf, guests can take a short stroll over to the working farmhouse that's home to goats, chickens, horses, and even a llama.

A solid option for families and travelers who want a quiet getaway, the historic Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa has plenty of activities in a quiet and peaceful environment. This large resort is in a secluded mountain setting and many of the rooms have gorgeous alpine views. Despite its remote location, there's plenty to do both at the property and at nearby ski resorts. ... However, decor isn't as upscale as one may expect for rooms at this price.
