Thanks for the memories

Jul 5th, 2020

My husband and I have had the pleasure of visiting Niagra-on-the-Lake on several occasions over the years and have been fortunate enough to have stayed at all the beautiful Vintage Hotels at one time or another.  Several years back we decided to try the Oban Inn. We heard the women who owned and/or ran the Vintage hotels had purchased the Oban Inn. We LOVED her work so we booked a room at the Oban and instantly loved it!  Fast forward to July 4, 2020 and our experience is not the same. Something changed and it wasn't Covid. The ladies in the lobby were very nice, but lacked that 5 star warm greeting we had been accustomed to. The massage therapists were excellent, as they always had been, however the spa experience was less exciting because of Covid, but that, we totally understood.  It was our room that was disappointing. Really disappointing. We highly recommend that you don't book room eight (8). The bath tub appeared to be stained, maybe it was the lighting but I don't think so. The air-conditioning unit must have been leaking because the water stains could be seen down the wall. And they've added soap dispensers, like those found in 2 star hotels vs the small neatly wrapped soaps. The worst part however honestly was the lack of sound insulation in the ceiling. We heard everything (i.e. walking, items being dropped, talking) all night - and I mean all night long. We never did sleep much so the minute we woke up we checked out. As we settled our bill we weren't asked how our stay was (like we had been in the past) so I didn't explain our experience.  The young woman was pleasant however unfortunately, once again, lacked that 5 star quality we once had. Thanks for the memories Oban Inn. But next time we will pass.   TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Terrible Check-in/Check-out Experience

Jul 4th, 2020

My wife booked us a room package which included a room with a balcony, breakfast and a 30$ dinner voucher. We received a phone call from the hotel the day before explaining that the restaurant wasn't available due to covid. Completely understandable. They switched packages for us which still included breakfast. At that time, I confirmed we would still have the same room with a balcony. The lady on the phone confirmed. Fast forward...we arrive to check-in and arrived early at approximately 1:30. Check-in is at 3. I ask again to confirm that our room has a balcony. The young lady checking us in states that it didn't. We explain that we booked the balcony room and that somebody actually called and confirmed it had a balcony. She apologized and stated that all balcony rooms were booked and there was nothing she could do but our "room has a fire place"...which is useless in 40 degree weather (oh...and I actually tried the fireplace. It wasn't working properly. The flame kept dying out and would go back to the pilot) Seeing our frustration, she offered us a discount on the room. She took our number and would notify us when the room was ready. Fast forward again...it is 3:15 and did not receive any call. We show up back at the hotel and ask if our room is ready. She contacts housekeeping and they told her it was ready. She walks us over to our room and housekeeping is still cleaning it and tells her it would be another 15 minutes. My wife and I, completely frustrated, walked downstairs. The lady apologized again and said she would go help housekeeping clean. So my wife and had to wait well past check-in time for our incorrect room standing outside in 40 degree weather. I find it frustrating that when we got there early and there was already a mix up with the room which they couldn't remedy by getting us the room we paid for, that they didn't immediately have somebody clean our room to get us in quicker to compensate for the oversight. Not to mention that now, we had to take a room that was possibly rushed in their cleaning in covid times. My wife finally get our room. Go have our evening out. We get a compt bottle of wine from the front desk. Next day have a lovely breakfast. Great! Dining staff was lovely! Go to check out and we get Donna. She puts down the invoice and says "you have a 20$ bottle of wine charge". I tell her it is supposed to be compt. She looks at me and says "you're getting a discount on the room and a compt bottle of wine?" with attitude. I explained that we got a discount on the room because they screwed up. She then blames us for booking the wrong room online. I once again explained we booked the room with the balcony AND a lady called and confirmed it. She then basically said I was lying because "everybody knows that room doesn't have a balcony". Well, we aren't staff and we are guests and we booked a room with a balcony and we're getting a discount because the hotel screwed up. We don't need attitude or be accused of screwing up the reservation. She then has somebody else remove the bottle of wine as a line item from our invoice. I notice the subtotal was the same. I pointed it out and she seemed a bit confused. She then tried to explain that she knew it all along that the first invoice was correct but removed it as a line item for my sake. Just flat out insulting!! She didn't even understand her own invoice initially because she clearly said "there is a 20$ bottle charge on your invoice" and also said "you're getting a discount on the room and a compt bottle?". Clearly she didn't even realize in the first invoice that the line item was included and subtracted from the subtotal. Overall, it was very infuriating when you are a guest and made to feel as if all the errors were ours when clearly the hotel dropped the ball. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Not trusting their cleaning procedures

Jun 30th, 2020

Upon checkout, found out their Duvet covers are not being washed after each time people leave. Witnessed cleaning ladies washing glasses and cups in wash basin with rags. Upon questioning a staff, rooms are cleaned inmmediately and not left for a couple of days before cleaning. I do not trust this place anymore. I feel for the people working there if the Manager does not care. This virus is v serious. Hopefully someone will report them to the local Health Officials. Thank you. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

We had a room with a fireplace. Loved the hotel and everything about where it was situated. Easy walk to town and walking around the water. We enjoyed the bar. Just enough attention but not a bother. Breakfast buffet was super nice.. Room is nicely decorated and the very comfortable. Will return. Plus 2 winery vouchers, spa voucher and dinner voucher TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Amazing Overnight

Feb 25th, 2020

When we were first married, my in-laws would take us to NOTL for golf and dinner at Oban on some Sundays. We have been coming to NOTL ever since, especially the last few years. We have a Mid-Winter Break in February, so for the last few years we have done an overnight & this year we chose to stay at Oban as we had never stayed overnight. What a great decision it was. Really reasonable rates during the week that included breakfast. The room was amazing, as was each member of the staff. We did dinner at another place, but came to the lounge for a night cap and loved they kept a small part of the restaurant intact with the Scottish plaid decor. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
