Safe, secure, and well taken care of during COVID times

Aug 6th, 2020

My husband and I spent 4 days here in July. The staff took every precaution to keep us safe and healthy. Never once did I worry about any COVID related issues. Hotel setting is exquisite. Property is right on the water. The buildings themselves are gracious, and welcoming. Our room was large and had a wonderful private balcony. Bathroom had every amenity you could want. We booked a beach cabana and it too was lovely and luxurious. I felt that the beach area was understaffed. We had wonderful breakfasts each morning. Our tasting menu dinner at Coast was one of the best we've had. Thank you to the entire staff for making us feel normal again in these crazy crazy times. STAY SAFE. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beautiful Property, but Poor Value & Service for Price Paid

Aug 5th, 2020

I'd advise anyone looking to stay at Ocean House to examine the reviews posted after their reopening. The good: Rhode Island was relaxing, and the Ocean House is beautiful. The room was nice - bed was comfortable and bathtub was luxurious. We had great snacks and sparkling wine upon arrival. The bad: I didn't feel particularly safe while there. The Ocean House staff seemed overwhelmed. They was running at max occupancy, and it was SO crowded in the indoor areas, esp. the lobby / reception area. Some guests were wearing masks, but def. not all. I'd say probably half / half in the indoor areas (incl. guests that were walking around indoors) and very few guests were wearing masks outside. We asked to skip turn down service, but housekeeping still tried to come into our room. We also were never offered a self-parking option. Both seem like they would be issues for someone who were taking the health situation seriously and didn't want people in their cars or rooms. It certainly felt like there was no pandemic at the resort. The dining options get booked far in advance. There are many people coming from outside to dine at the restaurants here, which is not standard compared to other luxury resorts I've stayed at during Covid. As other reviewers have noted, there are also limited outdoor dining options. There is a "family platter" food delivery service that is supposed to be able to bring nice meals to anywhere on the resort. When we tried to call for this, the front desk never picked up (!) and so we just did room service instead. Also, the deadline for same day delivery for the "family platter" was 3pm, which we thought was way too early for essentially room service type food options that you could get delivered to other places on the property. The updated dining options in general were not well communicated to guests prior to arrival. The room service food we did order was poor - certainly worse than our expectations, which wasn't high to begin with. The service overall was inconsistent, which bothered me. The response to a lot of requests was "no" - no late checkout, no dinner reservations available, no return call from the front desk. I had never felt this un-special at a luxury resort before. Other tidbits that might be helpful: To contrast with Ocean House, we went to the Chanler at Cliff Walk for lunch in Newport, and the service was amazing. They didn't have valet due to Covid but they had a person directing traffic to self-parking. Food was much better than what we had at Ocean House, and the overall vibe was calmer. Tables were spaced out with plenty of distance between for social distancing. I think Chanler at Cliff Walk would be a really nice option in Newport. I still think the advantage of Ocean House is that you get a private beach with beach service, which seems worth it in the area esp. because the RI beaches mostly require resident parking stickers to park. The beach was fine but not amazing...a lot of seaweed this time of year. I think the public beaches on Long Island / Hamptons or Cape Cod are nicer. Overall, for the price that we paid (close to $2K per night), we expected a much better experience. I hope the team is working on improvements to their operations. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

fantastic experience

Jul 30th, 2020

Ocean House Review: amazing experience for middle age Virginia couple There have been many bad reviews which I totally disagree with. My wife and I have had a wonderful experience and wanted to share this. We are in our mid 50’s and our kids are out of the house. We travelled here during covid 19 which is low in Rhode island but high in our home state. My wife researched this amazing place which re opened in mid June (and yes there may have been some “bugs” they had to work out per prior reviewers and staff) but is in full swing now. RI has very low covid rates and the hotel is very safety conscious. Many people complained about price but this is truly 5 star and you get what you pay for—this hotel is definitely one of the best we have ever stayed in and worth the high dollar (and remember many things are included). Safety/Housekeeping: Many changes have been made. Hand sanitizer is everywhere. People generally all wear masks. The staff does and sometimes the patrons forget but are quickly reminded. The gym I used daily had sanitizer, wipes, towels, free disposable headphones for example. Our room had hand wipes for us to wipe down “extra” if we wanted. We did twice daily service which you DO NOT have to do. No one will come in your room if you don’t want. We noticed housekeeping all wore masks, gloves and very sterile. Even when ice brought to the room done in safe way and you meet them at the door. A bar cart came to you door every 5-7pm because the bar area is closed or roped off due to safety and the management wanted you to have option of drinks being delivered right to your door. Our housekeeping team was awesome! We had twice daily service because we came in July and they had hot spell requiring twice daily showers. They took great care of room and never forgot to bring us ice. They go to know our routine of coming in room later afternoon after excursions or beach and they brough ice WITHOUT US CALLING FOR IT!. Now that is service! They left bookmarks on our books (we forgot ours), they leaving make up remove in the bathroom, lens cleaners on my computer/phone and many others small niceties that really made us feel special. Accommodation: We stayed in deluxe terrace room 205. We looked right at Taylor Swift house few properties over. The terrace was large with table and chairs and 2 loungers. It gets direct sun on the right side of the building. It overlooks the croquet court. We can see the beach and water. The room was great size with king bed, 2 chairs with 1 ottoman, bedside tables, desk complete with ipad for all hotel info (dining/activities/etc), dresser and side table. Bathroom was very large with toilet room, shower with beautiful rock floor, large tub, sink and doors that open from bathroom to main room (can shut off for privacy or leave open). The bathroom had all amenities including high end shampoo/condition/body wash. Ac was great and overhead fans. There is air purifier that can be turned up very loud like “white noise” fan which we needed. A refrigerator with local beer in can, iced tea, soft drinks and 2 bottles (you can take home with you and reuse). There is a water dispenser in various locations to refill these reusable bottles. Large water bottles put in room each day included also as well as 3 bags of goodies (chocolate malt balls, goldfish, mixed nuts) that along with drinks are replenished daily (part of you daily $42 resort fee). We loved our room and location Valet: Included in resort fee. No tipping anywhere except in dining areas. The valet at front are wonderful. They will get your vehicle back and forth during day. They will shuttle you free of charge to areas within 15 minutes, and they can pull up the Mercedes cars (about 8-9 or so in fleet) that you can use free of charge, first come first serve on day of use after checking in with front desk. They have many types of MB including AMG, SUV, convertibles that you use complimentary, if available. Front desk staff: All the people up front I felt were very attentive. You could go to the desk or call (old way) or text them (new way) which I love. They answer quickly. They accommodated all of our needs. We drove at least 3-4 different Mercedes Benz cars on their loaner program and front desk assisted us with this. They also helped us with artwork. Around the hotel are many local artists creations. Most of them were for sale. Nice to take home the “local color” of watch hill RI by purchasing the artwork. Check in and check out were a breeze. All the luggage transfer was part of your resort fee so no tipping needed and they helped set this up. Planning team: We called when our cruises for the year were cancelled in May. Glory Lopez talked to me that first day and was fantastic and she really knows her stuff. We wanted certain type of room. We had to get multiple rooms at first to get one-week bc our category was full. As covid went on some people backed out (eventually opened in mid-June) and Glory was able to get us one room, the category we wanted, and even the exact room number of one we liked! What personal service! And we emailed back and forth for months to get set up: reservations for meals, ideas of excursions, items we needed in room—I mean she just did it all. We also talked a lot to Emily Mazzarelli. She is the AA to the president, and she was phenomenal. We had some small issues and requests before and during and she made it ALL HAPPEN. She has pull! Haha. Dining: Bistro: ate here most of the time and the breakfast and dinner were amazing and service was impeccable. The servers were from all over the world and well trained. The maître d was fantastic and made everyone welcomed. One patron had strange drink request and he researched it and made it himself within 15 minutes. Iggy and his wife and many others took care of us and were wonderful. Teams from south Africa, Serbia, Jamaica, and many others made up the staff. Did not do the Sunday jazz brunch. Music was great as we walked by. Menu looked very good. Seaside terrace: good for quick service. We ate their once and enjoyed it. Great view of beach and pool. Verandah: beautiful outdoor. Lighter fare. We did drinks and appetizer in middle of afternoon and was delightful! Dune cottage: on beach. didn’t try but everyone around us on beach like it. Coast: didn’t go but heard amazing. We don’t do much “fine dining”. Below deck: great for treats. We went to the sister property of Weekapaug inn and had great dinner at “the brassier”. They have fine dining at “restaurant” which we didn’t try but heard great things about. We went to Newport to eat and spend the day. We went to mystic a few times. We ate in westerly. There are definitely places to go to get out from hotel! Beach/Pool: The beach was very nice. We live in va where water temp is 80-90 and here refreshing 68. The staff down on beach was great. Cabanas for 475 which we didn’t use or the sunbeds about 150. Both are very nice but we didn’t need them. My wife and I used the free chairs with umbrellas that the team on beach took care of for us. The food was right next door to sitting area. Everything on beach was well run and we never had issues. The pool is more of lap pool. There is small outdoor like pool are of about 1-2 feet not really for swimming, but I guess you could sit in it. I love pools and so missed this a little bit but there is so much to offer here I didn’t want to be inside at the lap pool—wanted to be outside in beautiful sunny areas. The pool is right next to the seaside terrace. Gym/spa: I used the gym every day. It was set up for social distancing. Hand wipes for the equipment, towels, hand sanitizer, free ear buds as mentioned above. Very clean. Only few people in there when I was using equipment. View of the pool. We never used spa because of covid--we were anxious. Many people did and had positive comments. Croquet: Very pretty course with professional and twice daily teaching included 5 out of 7 days. I watched it and very interesting. I played with Stephen and he was super. Very nice and good teacher. My wife took photos. Had lots of fun. Kids/pets: We didn’t take ours as they are grown. Seemed like they were a number of families here and using the beach and grounds. There is nice small movie theater and some activities during the day. Saw a number of pets staying in the rooms. Pets on the beach and grounds as well. We did not take our pets. Boutique: Very nice gift shop. Peter Millar, smathers and Branson, hotel logo. We bought a number of mementos of high quality! We bought some art from local galleries and one from the hotel. Local tours: 1. Go to mystic CN 2. Go to Newport RI: we did mansions, food, wharf, galleries, shops 3. Providence RI: with covid we stayed out of big city but was safe 4. Boating: hotel offers great trips. We were too busy to go overall : we had great time great service 5 star would go back again! Disappointed

Jul 25th, 2020

This is a beautiful property but was very disappointed in the lack of outdoor eating. We went overnight with friends and I have to say other than the veranda for dinner, with a very limited menu there was no where to eat. We were not comfortable eating inside. The same for breakfast -the veranda wasn't open till 11:30 so we had a self service breakfast with also limited menu and the food was unacceptable. For the amount of money we paid for the room (which was beautiful) I felt like there wasn't much of an effort for outdoor dining or social distancing. The most unbelievable experience was there was a man playing the piano and singing in the lobby. You say that everyone is required to wear a mask and then you hire someone to sing?? Very disappointing!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Birthday celebration delight

Jul 15th, 2020

This was a birthday long weekend celebration and one of the very best decisions I have made recently. There really is no reason to leave the property just sit back and enjoy. There was great surf with a very attentive beach staff who provided chairs, umbrellas , drinks , etc. you were free to stroll the beach for a walk and be assured that staff kept an eye out for you. The service is beyond belief, the staff was always gracious and could not have been more attentive. We took a morning drive in their Mercedes offering which was fun and an easy process. A costly adventure but sure hit the spot at a time when people need a safe break and positive surroundings. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
