Great hospitality

Mar 25th, 2020

We were at this hotel in Nov 19 for a business trip, stayed here for 5 nights. I was very happy and pleasantly surprised by the hospitality of the hotel. The staff was so warm and friendly. They never said no for any of the requests. I had requested them for an adapter since i dint have an adapter for US sockets, they readily gave it to me for my entire stay without having to ask twice. They were also open to feedback and quick to act on it, be it our request for the choice of breakfast or room preference, they were always keen to help. The rooms of this property were very cozy comfortable with our own fireplace they had nice warm and rustic feel to them. I would suggest try getting a room on a higher floor where you can get a nice view of the bay area. Its a nice place to spend a weekend. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Disappointing - tired rooms that could use an redo

Dec 14th, 2019

Our department held a recent offsite meeting event at the Oceano. I've been a Half Moon Bay resident for almost 10 years, and was looking forward to the opportunity to stay at the Oceano so I could rate it for possible recommendation to our visitors. I had a King room on the second floor facing the water. Well, actually facing Barbara's Fish Trap, but (1) I had a legit water view, and (2) I love Barbara's, so I went to sleep with visions of fish and chips dancing in my head. NOTE: Yes, there are foghorns and you will hear them. It's a working harbor. This is a feature, not a bug. I always travel with earplugs anyway, but they are provided at bedside for those who need them. There is also a white noise machine at bedside if the earplugs don't quite cut it for you. The King room was quite large, with a decent-sized bathroom that had a walk-in shower and separate tub. Aveda products are provided, and a lighted magnifying makeup mirror is provided. The bathroom has shutters over the tub which were open when I arrived, so the bed could be viewed from the bathroom. This was weird to me so I closed the shutters :-) The room has a good-sized sitting area, with gas fireplace in front of the couch which is definitely a plus. The room has a small dining table, with refrigerator and sink. Spangler's Market, which is small but has a great selection, is a half mile away, so you can conveniently stock your refrigerator. There are many restaurants nearby (including the aforementioned Fish Trap), so if you find the hotel's food offerings to be a bit lackluster, there are convenient quality alternatives. Mezza Luna (both the restaurant for lunch/dinner and the cafe for breakfast/lunch) is quite good as well. Parking is free and is located in the basement. Very easy to park and bring one's luggage up in the elevator to the lobby. Guests with large amounts of luggage to carry in might be disappointed in the fact that there is no staff waiting at the entrance of the hotel to assist with luggage. Now for the constructive feedback: 1. First, the French country shabby chic decor is quite dated for a four-star property in this area, and it's time for a redo. At this point, unfortunately, it just looks shabby and tired. 2. The room needs USB charging ports at the desk and by the bed. These are getting to be pretty standard on four-star properties, and I was thankful that I had brought my personal USB charging hub with me, since I would have been SOL trying to charge my devices otherwise. 3. Bed, pillows, and bed linens - negative all the way. It wasn't the foghorns that kept me awake all night. It was the uncomfortable bed, the way-past-it pillows, the almost-past-it bed linens, and the old nasty polyester bedspread. The pillows were, to me, the worst of it - some were fiberfill, some were at least part-down with feathers poking me through the very thin pillowcase, and all were flat, flaccid, and years past their putative useful life in a four-star property. I am still aching two days later. 4. Wifi was mostly terrible, and cellular data services weren't very good in the parts of the hotel that I was in during my stay. Since I couldn't get a good connection on the conference wifi, I tried using my personal phone's mobile hotspot, and though it showed that the laptop was connecting to the hotspot, it would connect to nothing else, even though the phone showed that I had 2-1/2 bars. The conference wifi services improved somewhat after a comment was made to the event staff, but we were still encouraged to log off of the wifi on our individual laptops and devices during parts of the presentation that required remote connection, in order to free up bandwidth. First time I've ever encountered such a thing in the digital era. As for the issues with cellular data services and hotspot: I live here, I know where every cellular dead zone on Hwy 1 is between Santa Cruz and San Francisco, and this is not one of them. So, not sure why I couldn't connect to VPN over cellular hotspot, especially with the frustration of not being able to connect to VPN over the conference wifi. 5. A Keurig single-cup coffee maker is provided, but the coffee pods provided were not very good: the coffee was weak and watery. If a Keurig is provided, the least I expect is for some good coffee pods to be provided. All things considered, the bed etc was the deal breaker for me as far as recommending Oceano to a friend. Beds, pillows, and bed linens urgently need to be replaced in order to be legitimately considered as a four-star property. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Perfect wedding stay

Dec 9th, 2019

No complaints. Great rooms, great service, great location, great people at the front desk, housekeeping etc. They did a good job handling wedding snafus and it's great to be on the water. Love the foghorn and sounds of seals at night! Great stay. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Good place away from the city, especially for business people hitting SFO and San Jose in a single trip

Nov 25th, 2019

I will often stay here when i have a business trip in SFO and i will have meetings in multiple places up and down the bay (Palo Alto, SFO, Santa Cruz, etc). You can't beat the feel of the PCH and being right on the water. The drive to SFO is 30 minutes up the PCH and has some spectacular views. Plus, prices are much better than SFO (and no $50 parking fees). Lets me stay at a charming place, reasonable price with very nicely appointed BIG rooms. Good size bathroom, comfy bed and a living room with sink and a fire place - all overlooking the boats at Pillar Point Harbor. Literally, walk across the street to the harbor and have a bit of a walkabout, do a little surf shopping, have a glass of wine sitting outside Ketch Joanne or have some very nice seafood. Just 1 block north is another seafood place and a brew pub, so it's super easy to find good eats without even getting in the car. Staff is friendly, lobby is open and airy. Only negative was absolutely TERRIBLE wifi in the room. i asked to be moved to another room after one of my web conference calls went south. But when i tested the wifi in the other room it was terrible also. Seems like they know it's a problem as they immediately gave me the password to the conference wifi (also bad). Grumpy old guy rating: Thumbs up (even with bad wifi). TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Half Moon Bay Escape

Nov 9th, 2019

The stunning views of the water, living room setting that felt like a home away from home, and the spa like bathroom more than made up for the fact that I was traveling for work. The staff were truly warm and hospitable. I would return in a minute. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
