Average Hotel Experience

Last minute the day of I created a reservation for four nights at this property. I knew the location was in Old Town which is a tourism attraction area so I had some expectations. Upon arriving I did notice the hotel did look a little "old". I checked in via a glass window because their lobby is closed due to Covid-19. The hotel charges $10/per day for parking in their garage. Personally, I parked every night right in front of the property with street parking for free. As I was traveling to my assigned room I did notice the elevator and hallways could use extra cleaning and a man was smoking outside the room next to my room. When I opened the door I was shocked by how large the room was. As I was walking around the room I realized it was kind of tattered, dusty, and smelled like smoke (possibly from the neighbors). I am displeased that the staff would even booked that room with it's conditions. I immediately panicked and called the network I booked the reservation through. The represented advised that I chat with the front desk staff about cancelling and a refund. I requested to cancel the reservation and for a refund to the front desk staff. The staff member explained that because I was in the room for over 20 minutes I could not request a full refund. I was explaining that my intentions to cancel is based on having an autoimmune disease and being an asthmatic and I cannot stay in a dirty room or be around smoke especially during this pandemic. The staff member did explain he was going to remedy the situation by offering me another room and if the room was not up to par then he will take further steps. He took me another floor and offered me a suite. I would compliment them and state that their rooms are very large for the price and this would be good size for a family. The suite did look much cleaner, however, I did asked for the staff member to clean the air conditioner because it was visibly dusty. The remainder of my stay was nice. Housekeeping was great with cleaning my room everyday. It was interesting to see atypical people around the hotel and it was little concerning to see the police consistently riding around the property. There was one day when law enforcement was there for a situation I am unaware of. To be honest I did expect better from the reviews and photo of this property. However, this is a really good location in a tourism area, the rooms are a large size, and it very affordable. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Besides the need for remodeling, the parking lot was dirty and didn't feel safe at all. Room had new flooring which made my stay feel better. Overall this place needs to be cleaned despartley. Front desk was very kind and helpful. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Great value for money

Great budget hotel. Staff were all so lovely and very friendly and helpful. They gave us a free upgrade which was very kind of them and was a great bonus - thank you! Room was as you expect for a budget hotel. Slightly outdated but clean and functional, we had no problems with it at all. Freshly made waffles at breakfast were great too. Hotel is really close to the old town and an easy walk. Would recommend this hotel if wanting something reasonably priced. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Why do I have to give 1 star..?! Blinds don’t close properly - damaged and so not great at keep light out when trying to sleep through jet-lag.. Plug in the bath is inoperative. Sink is badly cracked and dated. Chair at desk is broken. Floor slippery, feels moist; lots of fluff came off my feet when I got in the shower.. A/c unit very noisy. Noise in hall outside from other guests at 5am. External look is dirty and unkempt - horrible stain of something evidently thrown at the front facade. One male night porter looked like he’d slept in his clothes for a few nights. Free breakfast is just a variety of low-grade carbs. It beggars belief reading the other reviews that this place has received high scores from so many. It is in desperate need of a remodelling to have any possibility of competing with neighbouring hotels. This is an example of an establishment that in truth bears no relation to the review score it has accumulated and the photographs in listings are as usual not a useful reflection of the condition of the decor. I have reservations about the security of the rooms too with access to room halls bypassing the reception. I’m always reluctant to post a negative review, preferring to speak to management directly when there are issues but this litany is not redeemable so I would pay a wee bit extra for a classier place, folks. When these failings were brought to the attention of the person on the reception desk his only response was that he would check them out.. no word of apology. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Not my cup of tea

Pros: Close to cultural attractions, restaurants, convenient to highway. It doesn’t stink. Cons: Room is small, outdated bathrooms (cracks in tub, exposed pipes, grandma’s old shower curtain). It feels like an old motel with paint. Parking spaces are wonky. Maybe this is about right for this price range in San Diego. I ended up here after basically taking a gamble on one of those sites where you pay before you know exactly where you’re staying. It wasn’t worth the gamble this time. I just had to focus on spending time with my family - we stayed gone most of the time anyway. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
