3.5 stars...great amenities but not a "luxury" experience.

Jul 18th, 2019

My mom, myself and my two school-aged children stayed here 3 nights for a last-minute birthday get away. Overall, we had a fun stay but it didn't begin well. A good chunk of time was wasted due to room key & parking issues. Because the resort took accountability & provided great customer service overall, things were mostly redeemed. However, the buildings and facilities are showing definite wear. That, coupled with operational issues, make it fall short of 4 star standards. I've included detailed descriptions below if you feel inclined to read a novel. The short of it is this resort has multiple fabulous pools, gorgeous grounds, mostly friendly staff, great customer service, delicious food & a convenient location. If you're willing to overlook parking, maintenance issues, major wear and tear and some operational issues and can get a room discount when booking, it's a worthwhile place for a family stay. (The 30% off plus breakfast is a great deal.) Yet, at full price rates, there are many better SoCal resorts, especially if you don't have kids. CONS: -Check-in: I was checked in by Raj who wasn't rude but wasn't very friendly either. He didn't provide an orientation or info. about the resort. This is a very large resort & a brief orientation should be included at check-in, especially for first time visitors. -Room key/door handles: According to management, it's a known issue & they're working on a solution. Sadly, we spent the entire 1st evening & over half of the 2nd day dealing with key issues. When we first got to the room, the keys didn't work. After that, the key stopped working almost every time we left the room. Following multiple trips to the lobby, we decided to change plans and all stay in for the night. (Thankfully, we were in a Plaza suite, closest to the lobby...other rooms are quite far away.) I called the front desk to see what else could be done & they scheduled maintenance to come at 10 the next morning. In the AM, we got back from breakfast about 10 to find a worker waiting outside the room. Apparently, the door mechanism stopped working entirely and we were all locked out. It took security over an hour to come manually unlock the door despite multiple calls by maintenance. Arnie and Cecelia in maintainence were extremely friendly and helpful (their attitude kept us from being as angry about having to wait for over an hour just to get into our room). However, the repair took another two hours or so because it involved replacing the entire door handle mechanism twice. We didn't want to leave the room during that time as we had originally planned because we would have had to move rooms if they couldn't fix the door. Finally, once the door was fixed we were able to get dressed & go to the pool, but it was almost 3 and the slides closed early shortly after we got there. In full disclosure, the resort did offer to refund our first night completely which was great since the first 1 and a half days were wasted dealing with key issues. Thank you to Priya at the Front Desk who took initiative to help with the issues. Most all others were friendly but she made a point to do more than just say "sorry" and rekey the key for the 6th time. Also thank you to Randy Vasquez, the manager, who listened to my frustrations after the door and parking issues mentioned below. He offered a solution AND followed through with his promises...which is rare these days. Ian, another manager also called the room to follow up on the door issue which was appreciated as well. Parking - awful!: Self-parking and valet both cost -around 25 and 40 respectively. I read prior to my stay that self-parking was far from the lobby. This is no was in you can't see it from anywhere in or outside of the main building far. I chose to do it anyway because the grounds are beautiful and I thought we'd enjoy the walk (this was before the key issues arose, haha). What no one mentioned, is that the "self-parking" was a large dirt lot near a construction zone with no sidewalk access. The paved lot across the street was restricted. There was a sign saying the self-parking lot would be closed for construction June 5th so visitors could park across the street after the 5th. Since it was only June 2nd, many other cars were parked and several self-parking signs pointed there, I went against my better judgement and parked in the dirt lot. The next day (June 3rd), I decided to get a book from my car. Much to my surprise, the lot was almost completely fenced in. I couldn't see or get to my car. Long story short, an employee happened to drive by on a golf cart with another couple whose car was locked in too. He spoke with some construction workers who told him to use the construction access road back around the parking lot. We were taken through active construction, past a hard hat sign to get to our cars. I was able to drive back out the access road & park valet. Not only was the situation bizarre (no resort workers seemed to know what was going on) but it was potentially unsafe. I was able to speak with the manager Mr. Vasquez about the situation. He offered me a $150 resort credit which was nice but most of that went to the charge for Valet parking. The fact that they charged for valet at all during that time is annoying...where else were we supposed to park? Also, even after I brought the issues to management, the "self-parking lot" remained mostly closed off through the next day (June 4th) and no one ever moved the "Self-parking here ->" or updated the signs saying it'd be closed on June 5th. Very poor communication. If you're considering staying here, I'd call and check if they're still doing this construction. Or you can just plan to valet park...but the hotel should advise guests of the parking situation before hand. Wear&Tear: Obviously the door handles are falling apart, there are chips in the tile, crayon marks on walls, old furniture, scratches, dings, etc. everywhere. Not on par for a resort that bills itself as a luxury resort. We chose a suite in the Plaza building solely because we wanted to be closer to the ammenities, but they are the cheaper rooms. Maybe (hopefully) the more expensive rooms are in better condition? Rooms did feel kind of dirty too. There was also bird poop on many on pool loungers, chairs, and outdooe common areas which is kind of gross. Staff was trying but there are sooo many birds. I'm not sure how they can fix the issue without exterminating the birds which would be awful or getting rid of the flowers and folliage that make the grounds so stunning otherwise. Lose-lose situtation. We just used towels to cover chairs & lots of hand sanitizer. Pros: Gorgeous grounds...landscapers work tirelessly to maintain the grounds. The flowers, trees and Spanish Colonial style resort make a beautiful, relaxing escape. It feels like a world of it's own. I personally liked the expansive grounds but they might be too much for those with mobility issues. There are golf carts to drive people around but I don't know how often they come around. Food: Vue restaurant great breakfast. The breakfast included offer is a great value. You get a set dollar amount per person to order anything off the menu (when they don't have the buffet) and it goes a very long way. We all tried several different things every day and it was all delicious. The french toast, tri-colored breakfast potatoes and chicken apple sausage are the best I've had anywhere. The executive chef was also present and personable. If you don't mind annoying birds begging, sitting outside overlooking the golf course is divine. Vue to go was tasty and about standard price for room service. Get the brussel sprouts! The cafe had good pizza and cesar wraps. For $10, you get a wrap, chips and fruit which is really reasonable, especially for CA prices. Pools: Despite inconsistent hours, the pool slides were so much fun. There is a small slide for toddlers and two big slides for people 48" or taller. The small sand pool was my 4 year olds favorite and the hot tubs (kid friendly temps) were a close second. Towels are big and plentiful. Adult pools have a breath taking view and were relaxing, but the waterfall was broken in the hot tub. We also LOVED the convienence and tranquility of the hot tub in the plaza courtyard right outside of our room. Friendly staff, good customer service: Aside from a few exceptions, all staff were friendly, pleasant and helpful. Without them, I'd give this resort 3 stars. The front desk clerks may not have taken the initiative to get to the root of the key problem but they were almost all patient and friendly. They were also very busy with special events. Priya and Niko both stood out for exceptional service. Arnie and Cecelia in maintenance were great! Eddie in bell services/valet also deserves recognition, as does the woman who took our room service order...Deborah I think? Unfortunately, I didn't write her name down. All housekeeping staff was friendly and eager to assist. Nearly all resort employees we encountered would smile, greet us and offer assistance which is what truly makes 5 star service IMO. The hotel also took accountability (for the most part) and worked with us to ensure we had a nice stay despite the issues. If this had not happened, we wouldn't be back to any Omni. It was our first time to any Omni resort as we normally perfer Hilton brands but we will try others (and this one in the future if the price is right). Location: Close to the beach, interstates and a few restaurants are about a mile walk (Broken Yolk Cafe, Taco shop and a market). So, twenty chapters later...that concludes my very...uh, detailed review. I've included everything I did in hopes it helps those looking into this resort. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Golf course review

Jul 15th, 2019

We've stayed here over the years and it is a great family resort with great faciiites including 2 fantastic golf courses. So when our golf group planned an outing here, I jumped in right away. Much to my dismay, the Champions course is in such a condition that even our local muni course is rated better. What happened? This used to be a great conditioned course with fun holes to play on. Lots of turf dugged up and ground under repair that it is an eye sore. And then there are holes where it is cart path only and you dont realize it until your cart stops operating and you have to literally back up to get the cart to operate again. While the staff was excellent as usual, the course let us down. what a disappointment. Expected so much more from La Costa golf. Really hope they will fix these. It will be quite awhile before returning. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

One of our favorite resorts!

Jul 12th, 2019

We absolutely LOVE this resort. Our family makes several visits here during every summer. The resort is gorgeous and clean! I like it here because it’s very kid friendly but also on the more classy and upscale side. All of the restaurants are awesome. We enjoy the poolside service the most. We love Martha, a supervisor in the poolside service. We just finished our stay there and Felix (another server) by the pool was awesome! My kids really enjoyed having him as a server. No matter where your room is, it’s not too far to walk to the pool which is also nice. We have used Liv Gorman’s assistance several times when booking rooms and making extra accommodations for us and she has always been awesome and friendly in helping us. The staff is friendly and very helpful. I couldn’t say enough great things about this Omni. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Not happy

When I called the hotel to find out about my American Express platinum perks they told me they would honor it and when I got there it was a different story. I booked directly through them. I was very disappointed. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
