Engage! Picard Beach Cottages are out of this world

Mar 15th, 2020

My wife and I celebrated our 50th anniversary on the incredibly beautiful West Indies island of Dominica. Although the southern end is more tourist oriented, with better roads and more western influence, we chose the tranquility and pristine beauty of the north. Cruise ships dock in the south, at the current capital of Roseau. As a result, most of the herds of tourists remain in that area. Picard Beach Cottages are located just outside the former capital of Portsmouth. If you rent a car, driving is a bit challenging, as the effects of hurricane Maria can still be seen while touring.  But hey; who's in a hurry? There are so many breathtaking places to visit in Dominica, I won't even go into them here. To the property itself, first let me say that everyone we encountered at this wonderful resort, was not just professionally "customer friendly," they were genuinely concerned with our enjoyment and satisfaction. From Leslassa in reservations to Johnny in security, everyone we met was dedicated to making our trip a memorable one. Accommodations are geared a bit more toward European visitors than US vacationers, and that's fine. AC adapters are available to convert the standard DC electrical format. A French press is provided for coffee, but we opted to purchase an inexpensive coffeemaker from James Store, just a few minutes away in Portsmouth (remember that name. They have EVERYTHING). Beds are super comfortable and all appliances and household items are provided. Cottages are not huge, but very comfortable. Plenty of room to relax and soak in the stunning location. I particularly loved the large porch, where each morning I enjoyed morning coffee watching small boats to five mast sailing ships come and go, while ocean waves lap the shore. Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Picard is that you are literally right on the ocean. Only a few yards of black sand beach separate you from the eternal waves of the Caribbean. I was fascinated to learn that the Pirates Of The Caribbean was filmed at this location, and each cottage bears the name of the film's crew member, who stayed there. Of equal significance is that the delightful Infinity Restaurant is located directly adjacent to the Picard property. Great menu with service to match, and a stunning ocean view. We dined there often, lunch and dinner. Plenty of other restaurants only a short drive away as well. We were pleased to discover that one of the popular tourist attractions is found on Picard's grounds. A 600 year old Saman tree is a great photo op, and a wonder to behold.Dominica is easily accessible from San Juan, Puerto Rico via Seaborne and Liat airlines, you can rent a car (we used a GPS with a chip for Dominica) or arrange for pick up through Picard. Drive on the left, with right-hand drive vehicles. Currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, which in early 2020 was $0.37 to the dollar. Television is available via very reliable WI-FI, as is your phone and computer. Everyone speaks English, but if you speak French, even better. We have visited islands in the Caribbean for over 30 years. Some have become so tourist oriented that it's difficult to peel the layers down to the real deal. Dominica is still unspoiled, and Picard Beach Cottages exemplify that genuine experience. I am sure that I have left something out, so don't hesitate to ask questions.s. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Beachfront Cottages on Sunset Side of Dominica

Feb 9th, 2020

If you are looking for an absolute beachfront with decent proximity to various food options and things to do/see but at the same time would like to maintain intimate and tranquil atmosphere then Piccard Beach Cottages is your new vacation home. However, if you are expecting luxury then probably this place, and overall Dominica is not for you... not to take away anything from either one as both are absolutely great! Location: about 1h "medium difficulty" drive (I drove around St Lucia and Grenada before and found Dominica comparable; it's not easy with all the hills and sharp curves and limited visibility so be patient, passenger car can move easily all over main roads in Dominica so no need for SUV though I would recommend having AWD/4WD if not big $ difference) from the DOM airport - the drive is pretty scenic with both nice ocean views at times but stunning display of Dominica's nature - you feel super small against all of the huge trees you pass. You are less than 5 minutes south of Portsmouth, Dominica's 2nd biggest city. There are grocery stores walking distance and restaurant options; mostly driving distance but some within reasonable walk. The Cottages are adjacent to the sister property called Portsmouth Beach Hotel which is condo buildings separated from the cottages by parking road and parking lot and on the waterfront by the Infinity Bar & Grill restaurant. On the other side there is nothing for quite some time along the beach but palm trees and other green stuff, thus the cottages maintain their intimacy and somewhat decent seclusion I would say. Room: you actually get a full cottage which is comprised of a bed room, "living room" that shares space with a full kitchen and a huge bathroom (both shower and bath tub present). The cottages could use some TLC but overall are very functional and the things that are a necessity during the stay in my book are all there; A/C, power converters (still brought mine just in case), fridge, and a decent bed, except the safe (I usually don't care for carrying cash with me but always prefer to leave passport etc. in the safe so unfortunately here there is no such option - a small upgrade the cottages could definitely benefit from). The mosquito net above the bed is there for a reason...so I highly recommend using it as the little guys can destroy your night (as they did with one ours LOL). The wooden structures are very cozy and fit the shoreline beautifully - the brown/white/green colors go amazingly well with the dark sand - it's a postcard perfect picture in my book. The porch is really nice thing too; some comfy chairs are present and a bowl of water on the stairs for you to wash off the sand before getting into the room is a nice touch as well. Last but not least your lullaby each night will be sounds of ocean and local birds that became very active at night; if you are a sensitive sleeper this could be an issue but then I would say green islands like Dominica aren't for you because from our past experience birds singing their nightly melody is always the case :) [our stay coincided during some crazy bomb cyclone in north Atlantic that resulted in some insanely powerful waves all over Caribbeans in this region so the sound of waves hitting the shore at night sounded like a tsunami coming :) wake us up quite a few times but eventually the ocean went back to peaceful normal - first time in my life I felt being so close to the ocean was not as a relaxing thing - again this was just some type of freak conditions, however do realize you are right there on the water - I read in the past people complaining on other islands about the ocean sounds... do take that to consideration if you are one of them]. Our cottage was #308 and I would say it was perfectly appointed - one before the south edge of the property, the front row on the beach, and away from the restaurant - which can get loud sometimes so we were happy we were not in the cottages right next to it as well :) Each cottage has a separate free WiFi user/pw Hotel Grounds; as I mentioned the hotel is tucked in between a vacant piece of land to the south overgrown by trees and bushes, the restaurant and the sister property to the north, the "land" edge is cut off to the back of the 2nd row of cottages by the parking lot and the access road - it's a fairly small area but absolutely beautiful. There is lots of star fruit trees all over the property (Carambola fruit) with some palms and other trees here and there. I walking through the property whenever we left or arrived at Picard's, it's amazingly cozy and welcoming. The lobby is located at the very "front" of the property, right in front of the parking lot once you arrive - the little path then takes you to the row of cottages with only one other option before being the side path to the restaurant. The beaches in Dominica are public but due to the location (as mentioned in the very first sentence of this part) don't expect any one to share the beach with really... the white fence separating the "private property" grounds from the beach is more of a decoration (the contrast of colors against the dark sand adds up to the charming appeal of this place) rather than something to worry about. Beach & Views: as mentioned before, our stay didn't team up well with the ocean conditions so we haven't really gone swimming and thus I can't speak about snorkeling, depths and visibility etc. However, what I can mention is that we did some super nice and relaxing walks on the beach and I could not recommend it more! This was the first time ever I could walk on the beach right from our cottage barefoot, stroll on the beach for quite some time without seeing any other property along the beach, and maybe a handful of people that we passed. I started many trips ago going to Caribbeans for white powdery sands and turquoise waters but nowadays I get excited more about the unusual dark sand beaches and the "greener" waterfronts; which is exactly what you get at Picards. Food & Restaurant Options: you can read my separate review about the restaurant "on the spot" [not part of the hotel, owned by an unrelated party since it became Infinity Bar & Grill, before apparently they were part of Picards] so let's leave at me recommending it for breakfast and the rest is up to you :) About 5 minutes drive north towards Porstmouth is Madiba, The Purple Turtle for breakfast/lunch, about 45 minutes south is the Sunset Bay Club Lobster Palace (an absolute must for lobster sunset dinner - trust me on this one!!!), about 45 minutes east (back towards DOM airport) are some great places in the area of Calibishie (Rainbow, Escape Beach, POZ). Do your research in the area as TripAdvisor isn't too well populated when it comes to info about Dominica, and especially recent one. Things to do:You have the Cabrits National Park [think Fort Shirley] within about 10 minutes drive, some beaches; at Picards, 15 minutes north is Douglas Bay, 30 minutes south is Mero Beach, 30 minutes northeast is Batibou Beach (before going read my review so you are warned, though it's probably the most beautiful one in Dominica FYI), you have Red Rocks shortly pass Batibou, drive to Roseau is easy and from there you can go check waterfalls (we did Trafalgar and loved it), do some whale watching from Roseau (ours got cancelled sadly... though Dominica supposedly has whales all year round, also whale watching I heard is possible from Portsmouth, I wish we knew before...), I recommend taking a visit to Botanic Garden and doing the Morne Bruce "hike" during one shot as it's a great combo, also an absolute gem of Dominica make sure to go to Scotts Head - it's about 1.5h drive one way but so worth it - it's a one time deal so you will not go there more times, it's worth! Last but definitely not least the Indian River is literally less than 5 minutes north from Picards - an absolute must while in Dominica. See my other reviews as I always try leaving useful info so others can benefit from my mistakes :) if moving around is not your thing then the location is perfect for sunsets and also stargazing... I have never seen this many stars while on the island as we did in Dominica! :) Overall: we loved Picards! In all honesty I was a bit concerned coming here at first... I rely heavily on TripAdvisor as my source of info and do heavy research outside of it, couldn't find much useful stuff about Dominica and about Picards in particular. The fake review that someone posted literally couple days before we arrived (removed by now from here, shame on you whoever wrote it) made me even more concerned... but it all went away the moment we arrived and met the lovely people at the check in hut (something I should emphasize, people in Dominica are super nice and friendly and the entire team at Picards was no different, thank you for having us!) :) then as we were walking to our cottage I knew already that my biggest regret about Picard Beach Cottages is that we were not staying here long enough (we had split our vacation in Dominica between two properties; one on the west coast and other on the east as we wanted to see/check the "entire" island as much as possible - must admit it worked out perfectly from the logistics standpoint I wish we could add at least one more day to Picards!)... Truth be told if this was any other island these beachfront cottages would be swarmed with visitors and they would cost 10x times more... but since it's Dominica and tourism isn't big here these are probably the most affordable waterfront accommodations ever - give it a shot, I bet you will love it as much as we did! Bien Situé mais cher/ very nice location but expensive

Aug 9th, 2018

Malheureusement la meilleur option à Porthsmouth, l'endroit est d'un mauvais rapport qualité prix Wood cottages located on the side of the beach (black sand beach on the caraibean sea side) or in the near by garden. The coconut plantation was destroyed last year by the storm, it seems no improvement will start soon : the plantation is abandonned, and surrounding looks like more a rubish storage than a garden The cottages are more or less well equiped, on 2 AC, one was down and got no discount for it, cooking equipment is OK. The restaurant near by has no charm, except being in front of the sea, if you are willing to have your breakfast be prepared to pay everything as an extra : toasted bread, butter, coffee : no continental breakfast, only a la carte. Dining menu is far from being enthusiastic The beach is more or less clean, the ancient warf is abondonned, only cement poles are remaining and no sign of improvement soon For sure the best place to be in Porthmouth but totally over priced in respect of the equipments , service and maintenance TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
