Perfect location with a stunning breakfast.

Apr 26th, 2020

Nice hotel and friendly staff. We had read reviews that the rooms were a little on the small side so we booked a delux corner suite which gave us that little bit of extra space. The hotel is very interesting because its an old prison. A lovely big selection at breakfast. The hotel is situated just over the road from V & A so it's location is perfect. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Excellent Location.

We chose this hotel for the location and we were not disappointed . Around 5 minute walk takes you to the heart of the waterfront where there were some wonderful restaurants. We ate at Sevruga which was amazing. The hotel is an old prison so has plenty of character. The staff on check in were friendly and helpful. They booked taxis for us to take us to Table Mountain and to pick up our hire car, also arranged tickets to Table Mountain. As a family of 3 we booked a room with a twin and a double room together which was comfortable but the rooms were a bit small and storage in the rooms was very limited. I would recommend upgrading to a larger room. Great hotel TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Really good choice for our Cape Town visit

Mar 28th, 2020

We found this to be a great location for the V&A waterfront and the terminal for the hop on hop off buses and for Robben Island. It does seem rather strange to be sharing the accommodation with a university department but we loved the quirkiness of its prison heritage. All the staff were courteous and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable but not outstanding. We would certainly choose to stay here if we were visiting Cape Town again. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Marriott Protea in Great location

Mar 19th, 2020

Stayed here 5 nights using the 5th night free Marriott points offer. Location is super. Easy walk down steps to the Cape Town Waterfront. It’s a little basic ( no robe, conditioner ) it has multiple buildings, some of which have real character (old prison). Done Buildings are shared with the university. The clothes drier in building 2 floor 2 lounge 2 does not work well. The one in lounge 1 (sane floor) does. Staff are efficient. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

A Former Prison, goes upscale

The best part of the Protea Hotel Cape Town is the location, which can be beat. Literally you walk down some stairs and you're at the Victoria & Albert Wharf, where so much action is happening all the time. Also walking down the stairs from their breakfast room in the third building you will see the Watershed, which is a big warehouse full of artisians who are selling their unique goods. My friend and I did the bulk of our souveniner shopping at the Watershed, because you can usually meet the artists right there and then. You might find some things for a bit less in S.Africa, but it's all curated so well here, and if you don't like haggling then this is your place. The rooms in the Breakwater are a little small, and the bathrooms are blocked off in frosted glass, which doesn't give you the best privacy, but it's okay. I also tried the Marriott AC, also called Waterfront, and it's a lot nicer, if luxury is what you're looking for; it has a huge and proper lobby with a really helpful concierge, and a breakfast buffet that is huge. Marriott AC also has a roof top pool that is lovely and a convenient shuttle that runs 2x an hour that will take you the 10 minutes to get to the wharf on the other side. It all depends what you're looking for...I rather preferred the "Prison" because it is all right there. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
