Good hotel but fire alarm kept going off and elevators get stuck
Aug 10th, 2019
We were a group of 24 from 6 countries and we enjoyed the array of food and desserts. However, the bedrooms we were sharing are quite small and so are the beds. The beds are the size of high school ones and mattresses are very uncomfortable. They’ve probably been used for years and never been changed so some of us would wake up with backaches. The small beds and duvets means you have to sleep in one position or else the blanket falls off if not you. One of us got stuck in the elevator for 30mins. Our trainer said this isn’t the first time she has heard of such an incident. The pool and gym are also quite small and the pool isn’t heated. Ice cold. For a two week stay I would recommend a different hotel. I have been to the Marriot in the U.S. and this establishment is nowhere near the standards of a genuine Marriot hotel TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

I generally opt for Marriott properties wherever I travel, but this was a bit let down from the usual. This Protea Hotel felt like it was a bit old, by the decor and arrangements. Rooms were huuuge, clean and comfortable. It was located close to my office hence I had to chose this hotel, but the area/neighborhood felt a bit sketchy to venture out at nights. They do have a rooftop bar which offers nice views during sunset. Breakfast was decent, restaurant meals were good. Nothing extra-ordinary to write about thie property. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Okay value for an okay stay

We opted to stay here when we had to make a last-minute hotel change and didn't have very many options close to the train station. This place is a bit over-priced (probably because it is one of the only options in that area) but the room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the shower was hot, and the breakfast was delicious. Great location, nearby to WITs and Jburg Theatre. That's about it. The rooms are spacious but the neighbourhood is just scary. As a woman travelling alone I found the rooms and the layout quite daunting. I stayed on the 15th floor, the corridors are lonely and frightening. The room itself was spacious but I did not feel secure. The dining both dinner and breakfast were adequate, the food tasty. My room did not have hot water, the TV was broken and the air con would not shut down. When I brought it to the attention of staff when I was checking out they just said sorry about that. Glad I was only there for one night. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
Spacious, attentive staff and excellent food!

Still my favourite places to stay in Johannesburg. The newly renovated rooms are EXTREMELY spacious, boasting a separate lounge/desk area. The staff are friendly and attentive. Whether it be room service or buffet, the food rivals far more expensive hotels. A definite MUST stay if in JHB. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
