Residence Inn Montreal Airport = Not Suitable for Overnight at Airport

Jan 7th, 2020

I never stayed at Residence Inn Montreal Airport before because prices are generally high and the hotel is not very close to the airport. For my latest stay I saw an unusually low rate so I gave it a try for the first time. In their defense it’s a Residence Inn brand hotel so they are targeting people on a longer stay and I was using the hotel for the wrong purpose (only overnight) so my assessment is partially unfair, that said my takeaway is that there were too many issues in a short period of time for me to be tempted to come back. The hotel is about a 15-minute drive from the airport so it’s not as convenient as Sheraton or Aloft (let alone Marriott which is connected to the terminal), both of which have a very frequent shuttle bus schedule, or the Fairfield Inn which is just a bit farther. When we arrived at the airport we had just missed the shuttle bus. While I was chatting with the hotel in the Marriott app, they told me that the next shuttle was in about 40 minutes and that I could take a taxi instead and they would reimburse me which was a nice gesture. However when I went to the taxi area there was a long queue so I decided that the shuttle bus would not be any worse. When the shuttle bus finally arrived I was surprised how many people wanted to get in. Part of the problem is that the same bus serves not only RI but also the Courtyard hotel which is connected to RI. The shuttle bus is simply not large enough to handle such a volume of people at peak times. Some guests were told to wait for the next bus because they ran out of space. With the time required to load and unload suitcases plus driving time 15 minutes each way, it is difficult for the bus to serve the airport more frequently than once every 40 minutes when it’s busy and the longer it takes for the bus to come back, the more guests end up in the queue which makes the situation even worse. I booked the entry level room (studio) and as Marriott Ambassador Elite I saw in the Marriott app one day before check-in that I was pre-upgraded to a 2-bedroom suite. The upgrade was quite generous and kudos to them for the elite recognition. The hotel is fairly old so nobody should expect great hardware but it’s all about convenience: the room was very spacious and would be suitable for large groups: one bedroom had two beds, the second bedroom had one bed, on top of the sofa bed in the living room so you could possibly sleep 8 people in this room type. There were also two full bathrooms, in addition to a kitchen with a large fridge, microwave, dishwasher, etc. The room is well equipped for people on a long stay and possibly a large family. There was also a balcony with a couple of chairs that connect to each bedroom which could be nice in the summer. I am not an expert of the Residence Inn brand but the ones I have stayed at recently did not have the most impressive breakfasts. I had modest expectations but this hotel’s breakfast was actually decent. There were tortillas available, salsa, shredded cheese, spinach, and scrambled eggs so you could make your own breakfast burrito. They also had steamed rice with sesame seeds and Japanese spices, so we ended up enjoying our breakfast more than some other more upscale hotels. In the hot food choices they also had standard fare such as sausages and roasted potatoes. Fruits were basic and cereals as well. Since we had a very late flight I asked the hotel if we could have check-out later than the standard 4pm check-out for Marriott Platinum (and above) guests. Especially given that we had received a very nice upgrade, it was entirely reasonable for them to say no to late check-out if they had assigned the room to a new incoming guest, but somehow in their response they made it sound like we could stay later than 4pm but only if we paid extra so it was a bit disappointing and we declined. As we were about to take our shower in the afternoon after the gym to be ready to leave at 4pm, the fire alarm went off so we had to get dressed in warm clothes to go outside the hotel in the middle of the winter, but fortunately the alarm stopped right before we were ready to go outside. We were in the hotel for only 18 hours and witnessed this incident; I guess a false alarm can happen in any hotel at any time, but with an older kind of hotel such as this one I am sometimes suspicious whether it’s truly a rare occurrence or not. All in all the upgrade was great and the breakfast better than expected. However normal rates at this property are usually higher than at Sheraton and Aloft near the airport which are far more convenient for an overnight, so I cannot recommend RI unless someone needs the extra facilities for a long stay, and nobody should expect a new & shiny property. Highly impressed with this outstanding residence hotel

Sep 21st, 2019

I stayed in this outstanding hotel a week in mid-July '19, and am HIGHLY impressed! The location is great if you don't want to bother with driving, parking, etc. The airport shuttle is reasonably timely. An ~10 minute walk to a bus stop gets you to the closest metro stop and a cheap ~15 min. train ride to downtown. Ask lots of questions to better understand how the metro system works, and to maneuver through some road repair works that required temporary moving of some of the many bus stops at the station. The hotel is spotless clean! The front desk staff team is AWESOME, very friendly, and ready to help at a moment's notice for any/ALL requests. I thoroughly enjoyed the COMPLIMENTARY FULL breakfasts every morning, complete with lots of fresh fruits and a variety of protein sources, not just carbs. Load up a plate to take to your room. The kitchen staff are also very friendly and appear to be professionally clean. A few times a week, there is a complimentary evening snack and fruit drinks which is sufficiently filling as a light dinner. Surprise! A variety of newspapers are available in French and English. The 1BR units are very spacious, reasonably QUIET, very well appointed as well as any top-tiered U.S. timeshare condo, with a full kitchen! Several web-connected computers are available in the lobby area 24/7. In-room hotel WiFi connectivity is good. The 1BR unit has 2 good sized TVs. A few rooms have a small patio. After my first night, I requested an upgrade (available to Vistana members), but was disappointed with the relatively small size and noise levels on the patio. The hotel is adjacent to a very busy highway and my room with patio faced this highway. This hotel is connected via a corridor to the adjacent Marriott Courtyard hotel which has more facilities, including a nice restaurant. The decor throughout both is very appealing and relaxing. A small shopping complex with a cinema, restaurants, etc. is a ~8 minute walk from the hotel, and across from that is another fast food restaurant(s). Across the street from the nearby bus stop (a ~15 minute walk from the hotel) is a large shopping mall with a huge grocery store. The grocery includes a section for making fresh cold and grilled sandwiches. Stop by a cafe, have a pain au chocolat, and try out your French on anyone willing to converse. I'm surprised how much French I recalled, though Canadian French is quite different from what I had learned. The rooms have a safe. I called twice before arriving to inquire if a large laptop could fit in the room safe, and was told by two persons, "No". Upon arrival, I was disappointed for not bringing my laptop, because the safe is large enough. The bathroom is well appointed and supplied with quality toiletries. Laundry, a pool and exercise facilities are in the basement. For late arrivals, be prepared to call for a shuttle ride. With no international roaming service, I called to schedule a shuttle ride prior to my late arrival, and was informed the shuttle would only be dispatched AFTER I had arrived, cleared customs and collected my baggage. Reasonable. If US travellers do not have international roaming service, there is a 24h HELP desk in the airport that can facilitate the local call, but actually finding this desk was a challenge, requiring several stops and patience. Similarly, finding the exit door to the hotel shuttles is tricky. Door #8 is on the other side of the airport from (Delta's) international arrival area, and several instructions I received to the shuttle door exit were confusing and seemed contradictory. The airport money exchangers give a better rate than the hotel gives, and probably much better than you can get in U.S. airports. For late arrivals, there are fewer money exchange desks in the airport. If necessary, take the hotel shuttle back to the airport to exchange larger amounts of money. The Canadian customs process is largely automated. Computers ask if you're traveling with foods, as all foods must be declared. If traveling with snacks, just tell the Customs Officer (who reviews the computer report) the country source of your foods/snacks. It seems very safe to explore downtown Montreal and other tourist attractions that involve lots of walking. Montreal is a lovely city with GREAT ethnic diversity and seemingly very friendly people. Montreal is an island, so in July's high temps, the area was quite humid with a several days of short rains. The Gray Line bus tour company has a large office downtown close to a metro stop, with a wide, affordable range of local and regional tours. Tours to Ottawa and Quebec are 12 hours long, half of which is on the bus with a toilet. (Too long for me) I ended up staying an extra night in another hotel when I volunteered to give up my airline seat due to overbooking. The airline the only hotel available at short notice was a low budget hotel. (Yeah, right!) Man-oh-man, how I missed Residence Inn by Marriott Montreal Airport! But the airline reward made up for this low quality experience. ;o) Always a good idea to SCHEDULE your shuttle ride back to the airport in advance. Bon voyage~~~ TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Exceptional and Professional Staff

Sep 4th, 2019

I recently returned from an extended stay at this Residence Inn. My family and I have stayed here in the past, before and after ski trips to Tremblant. The location is great but what makes this property really stand out is the Staff. General Manager Mirella Alfiero and Assistant General Manager Ana Oliveira have assembled a team of true hospitality professionals. After my midnight flight, I was enthusiastically greeted at 2 am by Rodney who was more awake than I was. The next morning, Mathieu and Ashley provided great directions to the nearby Metro to go Downtown. Every staff member smiles and says hello to each guest with a genuine concern for making their stay the best it can be. Shuttle service is friendly and quick. The breakfast here is superb; fresh and constantly refilled. Certain nights of the week, there are also complementary snacks. The suite I had was large and very clean. Housekeeping staff is on top of making the rooms up and refilling the necessities. This is our go-to hotel when we visit Montreal. Soundproofing of this building is great, you never hear nearby aircraft take off and land. You can always find a bed and a clean room almost anywhere. What you can't always find are professionals who truly care about their guests and their experience. The Airport Residence Inn Team are exceptional!! TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

An Airport Hotel Away from the Airport

Aug 20th, 2019

This Residence Inn is situated just outside of the busy and noisy Montreal airport area. When you are inside this hotel, you won’t even know you are nearby the airport. Also, the traffic is minimal with hardly any cars on the road driving towards this hotel. The best of all, this is one of the few hotels with no parking fee in Montreal. The hot breakfast is free and is one of the better one, the service is excellent, and the suite is clean. So with good food, good sleep and good price, what else can you ask for in a hotel? "Excellent Hotel with outstanding Shuttle Service"

Apr 14th, 2019

Hotel provided excellent service. The breakfast was very good and as an extra bonus there were mixers on Monday & Tuesday nights for everyone in the breakfast area. The Shuttle service was outstanding. We only had one night where our neighbors were to loud for sleeping. The front did not handle it. Otherwise excellent hotel. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
