As good as it gets!

Aug 14th, 2019

We booked one of the special deals on the hotel website which gave us an upgrade to a Deluxe Suite and we're so glad we did. The location was perfect with wonderful views from our room. It also meant that we had an easy walk into town and didn't have to use the car once. We experienced amazing service from beginning to end from all the staff, without exception. Everyone was polite, friendly and very forthcoming with any requests. Our Suite was a very welcome surprise: a large sitting room leading to a bedroom with a beautiful four-poster bed. Everything was very clean and well equipped. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and very welcome at the end of our busy days. Our deal also included dinner in the restaurant. The quality and service was exceptional. Although there wasn't a huge range for breakfast, what we had was delicious and plentiful. We didn't use the spa so cannot comment on that. This was a last minute decision for us to celebrate our anniversary with a couple of days away and we're so glad we chose The Royal Crescent. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Arrogance and Mediocrity

Aug 10th, 2019

I am usually not motivated to review mediocre stays but an incident that occurred during my last minutes in this hotel changed my mind. Upon leaving the hotel, the concierge asked the traditional question on how our stay was. I honestly responded that it was OK. However, it seems the gentleman was expecting something like superb or fabulous and so he literally laughed at my response. I took a very serious tone and said: “I have seen worse”. At this moment, the gentleman turned his back to me and went back to his desk without any reply. At that moment I thought that if the staff are that arrogant then a bad review would not be harmful. This incident also underpins my decision to give the hotel two stars instead of the originally intended three stars that would have reflected my experience more honestly (as my stay was OK until that moment). Let us start with the good things. The hotel is well-located. Not the best location but reasonably close to all the city’s attractions. The gardens are very nice and would be enjoyable in the unlikely case of a suitable weather. The breakfast was of high quality. Not a wide variety and nothing specifically interesting but it was nice. Now the cons. The shower in my room (no. 41) was very slow draining to the extent that I had to stop my shower two times to allow the water to drain. That was not very convenient for someone who had a tight schedule. The Wi-Fi was not reliable and kept disconnecting that in the end I had to depend on my mobile data connection. More significantly, the room design was not relaxing at all. You have to do some acrobats to get into and out of bed and if you have any tendency to claustrophobia then good luck trying to sleep in a bed literally nested between the room’s walls and ceiling. The most irritating issue, however, was the hotel’s policy about late check-outs. We had a very long train journey scheduled for the afternoon and we wanted to be able to freshen up before leaving. We asked for a late check-out for any of our two rooms, but we were told that there was no availability and the hotel is fully booked. However, the lady at the reception offered that we can book for another night and then we can check out at any time we want. Imagine that we were asked to book for a whole night just to keep the room for an extra one hour (from 12:30 when the complimentary late check-out ends to 13:30 when we wanted to leave the hotel). In other words, a room was free and available for a whole night but not for an extra hour (let alone the fact that you could easily find available rooms on the hotel’s website). It is worth mentioning here that the reception lady was very professional and polite. This is especially remarkable if we take into consideration that she already knew the hotel’s policy and that all these negotiations will lead to nowhere and still had to act as if some serious endeavours to accommodate our request was taking place. In short, for a concierge to be that confident of his hotel’s services, they have at least to make sure that the showers drain water properly, that the Wi-fi is reliable, that the rooms do not cause claustrophobia and most importantly, the hotel management has to find a better cover story for their late check-outs policy. We were given a voucher for afternoon tea as a present which we saved for a special occasion. Unfortunately, our special day was pouring with rain. When we arrived, rather wet, we were expecting to receive a welcome fitting the hotel. All I could describe it as rather lack lustre. As the doormen are the first people you meet you would expect them to give people a very special greeting. We were told to take the right path in the garden. We were amazed how wonderful and large the gardens are, just a pity the rain was terrible. We found the restaurant and were met by an exceptional lady. We thought of her as our hostess. She explained the process and what we should expect. Educated us with a description of the different teas. The service was brilliant, what you would expect from a five star hotel. We had a choice of savoury or sweet selection but as we had different tastes we were permitted to have a different one each. There were also cakes and Bath buns plus scones. We were spoiled for choice and were offered refills of all the courses. We left the hotel fully satisfied and rather stuffed. Our hostess made the afternoon so informative and exceptional, thank you. We felt it was a very special occasion we would always remember. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER

Excellent hotel - but beware!

Aug 7th, 2019

Before you make a reservation at this hotel, you need to know that the hotel will block a substantial sum of money on your account upon your arrival. As one of very few hotels in Western Europe, the hotel needs extra security. This information is not provided on the hotel website. Therefore, it might come as a surprise for the guests. However, the hotel is a gem in Bath. The staff is friendly and the service provided is very good indeed. The garden is beautiful and combines art with a massive amount of wasps. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful

We so enjoyed our stay again at this special and unique hotel in my husbands beloved home city. The hotel itself, gardens, spa, restaurant are all gorgeous. The staff cannot do enough and there is a wonderful atmosphere of attentive but non intrusive service. Thank you so much again for a truly wonderful stay. TRIPADVISOR.COM USER
